Re: Return of the Argentine Cup?

In reality the old Argentine Cup was made up to decide who qualified to the old Recopa Sudamericana(Which was more or less the equivalent of the old european Inter-Cities Fair Cup, which later became the UEFA Cup and today the UEFA Europa League), however that tournament was discontinued thus the Argentine Cup lost its main purpose, and there was an alledged lack of interest too, so in 1970 they went as far as the final but the second leg was not completed(Grondona wasn't in AFA yet, remember he was elected president in 1979).

will the winner get a libertadores place like in Brasil?

but overall this is one of the only good things grondona has ever done... will be fun to see if any small teams pull off the alcocorn vs. real madrid

The winner will qualify to the Sudamericana. Yes that kind of scenarios sound interesting, the only problem I see is that for the teams playing international tournaments may become brutal, this country is bigger than the majority of the european countries, and in the top 4 divisions only 3 or 4 provinces don't have a single team.

It is a good thing. I'm sure like for everything he does, he must have a good political reason for doing it. Probably a promise he made to the small clubs from the small provinces in exchange for their political support.

    I just heard about this:

    http://www.clarin.com/deportes/Excursionistas-Argentino-Merlo-penales-atajados_0_566343633.html

Anyway, the first four rounds have been completed if I'm not mistaken, with 122 matches already played.

The final phase, in with 64 teams will divided into four groups (each including 5 Primera Division teams, 5 Primera B Nacional teams, and 6 winners from the Fourth Round), will begin on November 22nd.

Re: Return of the Argentine Cup?

River will debut against Ariel Ortega and Defensores de Belgrano in a local derby played in San Juan unfortunately... i don't know why there is a need to have two teams from Belgrano playing in San Juan... but this is grondona so there's the answer i guess

    But i can't wait!!!!

Newell's was knocked out today by Patronato, after tying 0-0 and then losing in the penalty shootout. This is the fifth first division team knocked out by a lower division team, as last week Godoy Cruz was eliminated by Sportivo Italiano (third division), San Martin (SJ) were defeated by Sarmiento (also third division), All Boys lost to Atlanta, and Chacarita beat Union.

    Other results include:

    - Independiente 4 - 0 Colegiales
    - Estudiantes (LP) 2 - 1 Union (VK)
    - Tigre 4 - 2 Defensa y Justicia
    - Aldosivi 1(5) - 1(3) Independiente Rivadavia
    - San Lorenzo 2 - 1 Villa Dalmine
    - Sportivo Belgrano 2(5) - 2(3) Almirante Brown
    - Atletico Tucuman 3 - 2 Estudiantes (BA)

    Tommorrow's games:

    - Colon vs. Talleres
    - Racing vs. El Porvenir
    - Banfield vs. Atletico Parana
    - Belgrano vs. Sacachispas
    - Central Norte vs. Olimpo
    - Huracan vs. Excursionistas
    - Desamparados vs. Gimnasia (LP)
    - Atletico Rafaela vs. Ferro

There will be six more games next week, with the remaining matches of this round being played in February after the break.

    Yesterday's results:

    - Colon 2 - 1 Talleres
    - Racing 2 - 0 El Porvenir
    - Banfield 2 - 1 Atletico Parana
    - Belgrano 3 - 0 Sacachispas
    - Central Norte 1 - 2 Olimpo
    - Huracan 0 (3) - 0 (4) Excursionistas
    - Desamparados 0 - 1 Gimnasia (LP)
    - Atletico Rafaela 0 (4) - 0 (2) Ferro

Interesting how Huracan got knocked out by Excursionistas, a fourth division team. They're without a doubt the biggest surprise of the tournament so far. One could say they've been getting lucky, though, as they've advanced every round they played (three) by penalties.

So far we have a couple match-ups guaranteed for the next round:

    - Belgrano vs. Independiente
    - Chacarita vs. San Lorenzo
    - Olimpo vs. Excursionistas
    - Sarmiento (J) vs. Colon
    - Tigre vs. Gimnasia (LP)
    - Atletico Tucuman vs. Sportivo Italiano
    - Banfield vs. Atletico Rafaela
    - Racing vs. Patronato

Estudiantes (LP), Aldosivi, Atlanta, and Sportivo Belgrano, meanwhile, have all advanced to the next stage as well, but are awaiting the results of the remaining matches to discover their future rivals.

Anybody know who Nueva Chicago beat in the third round? Or did they receive a bye? I'm not seeing them listed in the 3rd round on the site (Wiki) that I'm viewing.

Anyway... Chacarita vs. San Lorenzo should be interesting.

The reason they don't appear in the Third Round is because that phase was for teams from el interior only. Nueva Chicago, like the other teams from the Metropolitan Zone that played in the second round, advanced to the fourth round after beating Ituzaingo.

And I agree, Chaca-CASLA could turn out to be interesting. Both teams have some history, but they're both going through tough times. San Lorenzo is doing horribly this season and is currently in one of the promocion slots, while Chacarita is doing even worse and is dead last in the 2nd division.

Interesting to see Teofilo Gutierrez scoring twice for Racing last night, right when it looked like he may never play for the club again

River seems to be throwing the tournament as we're going to put forward the worst possible team we have... I'm actually going to root for us to lose because my hatred for roman and alayes has reached a point of no return

Lanus were just eliminated after losing in a penalty shootout vs. Barracas Central. Last week Santamarina almost caused an upset after going up 1-0 vs. Boca, though the Xeneizes were able to tie and advance minimally through penalties.

    Rosario Central 1 - 0 Guillermo Brown
    Boca 1 (4) - 1 (3) Santamarina
    Argentinos Jrs. 3 - 0 Racing (Olavarria)
    Lanus 0 (7) - 0 (8) Barracas Central

Only two games left in this stage of the cup (Velez vs. Racing de Trelew and Arsenal vs. General Lamadrid). They will both be played on February 29th.

The following stage, consisting of 32 teams (16 match-ups), will take place between February 28th and March 26th.

16avos de final (newly confirmed matches in bold):

    - Belgrano vs. Independiente
    - Chacarita vs. San Lorenzo

The governor of San Juan has announced that the final will be played in their province instead of El Monumental. Because who wouldn't want to play in San Juan instead of Argentina's biggest and most recognizable stadium.

Honestly, the whole "play matches in random provinces and stadiums" is a massive pain in the ass.

Not to mention, no one wants to go to san juan. No one (no offense if you're from there of have family there), but its far as hell from here and its not exactly the nicest city in argentina. I'd rather have it in Velez or La Plata then in Mendoza.

The other strange thing about this, is the AFA will be losing money. El Monumental has the highest capacity, followed by the Kempes.

This stadium in San Juan seat 25,000, or 40,000 less than the Kempes or El Monumental and about 32,000 less than La Plata

Great planning by the AFA, just like when River and Defensores de Belgrano who are just a few blocks apart had to play in Salta. I'm really getting tired of this crap too

No offense to people from other provinces, but the odds are that this final will be between two teams from gran buenos aires, and there is no reason for these teams to travel all the way out there

Since it's the final, I'm surprised the AFA would have the final be held outside of el Monumental since I would assume they are after the money. Or if not Monumental, maybe a recently renovated or a newly built stadium like La Plata's. Since seating wise, that would bring in the most money. Surprised at this decision.

It's awesome if Boca won it at El Monumental. But I think part of the idea of the Copa Argentina is to bring the game to all the provinces, so in that respect San Juan makes some sense.

A new stage begins this week:

Octavos de Final (Round of Sixteen):

    Schedule
04/11: River vs. Quilmes, Tigre vs. Argentinos Jrs.
04/12: Atletico Tucuman vs. Atletico Rafaela
04/17: Barracas Central vs. San Lorenzo
04/18: Racing vs. Sarmiento (R), Deportivo Merlo vs. Sarmiento (J)
04/25: Rosario Central vs. Belgrano, Boca vs. Olimpo

This is where it starts to get interesting.. Only 16 of the 186 original teams remain.

The quarter final legs will be between the remaining two teams within each group. In other words:

    Group 1
Winner of Rosario Central-Belgrano vs. Winner of Boca-Olimpo

    Group 2
Winner of Atl. Tucuman-Atl. Rafaela vs. Winner of Racing-Sarmiento (R)

    Group 3
Winner of Tigre-Argentinos Jrs. vs. Winner of Deportivo Merlo-Sarmiento (J)

    Group 4
Winner of River-Quilmes vs. Winner of San Lorenzo-Barracas Central

The two semifinals, meanwhile, will be between (1) the winners of groups 1 and 2, and (2) the winners of groups 3 and 4.
