Re: Colombia's depth chart under "El Bolillo"

As you point out, we can see that Bolillo thinks that by trying different forwards he will eventually be able to find the one forward that 'works'.

He should be calling more midfield players in my opinion and less forwards... The midfield in Colombia is very poor.

Viafara? Restrepo? Ibarbo? Anchico? Valencia? Robayo? Marrugo? Weak very weak midfield and it showed last two games vs Ecuador and USA.

We need to start using Aguilar, Guarin, Pino, Cuadrado, Soto, Sanchez.... and two strikers instead of GioM who is useless, and a lone striker who never gets the ball.

Re: Colombia's depth chart under "El Bolillo"

"El Bolillo" has stated very clearly that it will take him about one year to find the ideal team. Meaning, not until early next summer before the Copa America will we know what his actual team will look like. Right now, he's in a period of observation to look at what works best. He's already declared his intentions to feature new players in different tactical formations in the upcoming friendlies.

According to the official FIFA calendar, Gomez should have about six more friendlies between now and Copa America (Nov 17, Feb 9, March 25 -29 [2 games], June 3-7 [2 games]).

Below are the lineups from each of the seven friendlies under "El Bolillo" so far. He mostly implemented a 4-2-3-1 formation with a midfield composition of two DMs (A. Aguilar/F. Guarin or J.J. Restrepo/J. Viafara) and Wingers (J.G. Cuadrado or V. Ibarbo or Anchico or D. Moreno on the right and H. Rodallega or A. Ramos on the left) on each side of G. Moreno, who plays more upfront as a Supporting Striker behind a more defined Striker (Falcao or J. Martinez or T. Gutierrez).

In the upcoming friendlies, we should expect to see Gomez test out a formation featuring a true no. "10" midfielder (M. Torres or G. Hernandez) coupled with two strikers. Hopefully he will also test out new players on the wings, like Pino or Soto.

No sabia que GioM era Mexicano.

The only reason I give Bolillo a half chance is because he has Leonel on his side...

Time is running out. 7-6 games to find the ideal team... Scary times for Colombian soccer.

this is a great post - i repped this big time and suggest to the moderators that this post be a sticky that gets updated after every friendly/official match so we can see trends and progress or lack thereof.

anyone agree with me on this?

well done in putting this together!

Re: Colombia's depth chart under "El Bolillo"

Great post but where did you get potential call ups?

Also Gio Moreno should not be called any more until he gets in good form in Argentina, he is a supradic player. One or 2 games is a beast and 3 games is a no show. The games he is good he is a beast but we need a complete team that also does its best not the best 11 we have that maybe could potentially show up. He needs to not be on the ground so much, he needs to let other players take free kicks and he needs to use his height to his advantage, he needs to bulk up and he needs to be ready for the team.

That is why I don't like the idea of Quintero, Gio Moreno, Pino or Macnelly starting because they are a sometimes good but usually awful player. We just can't afford to have a player to not be on the field. The past 4-6 years it felt like Colombia was playing with 9 or 10 men against 11.

Would also be nice for Bolillo to stop experimenting and putting players in the wrong position. Colombia finally has strikers but why do we have to throw him in the midfield?

Why is he so afraid to give youth a chance. Abel is no longer a little kid he is probably in the prime of his career and has more international experience than Viafara. Also why was the media so against the Mondragon call up but not Viafara, Restrepo, Yepes, or Ivan Cordoba?

Re: Colombia's depth chart under "El Bolillo"

it's funny you say that - b/c GioM scored two goals for Racing this week and is doing pretty well there from what i've heard from my friend who watches a lot argentina league games. Racing plays River this week and the focus apparently will be on how to control GioM.

i'll admit that i have only seen highlights of Gio at Racing and nothing more. but apparently he is quickly establishing a good reputation there.

i do agree that he needs to bulk up and get stronger, but he did draw some fouls, but unfortunately without rodallega, we had no real FK specialist available. i'm sure it is always predetermined who takes FK's in whatever situation they are in.

my main criticism with GioM is that he has the tendency to take one too many dribbles with the ball. if he were to pass the ball a second sooner in many cases he would be a menace. part of the problem is that when playing alongside ibarbo and ramos - they weren't doing much. i would like to see a 3-some of GioM alongside Dayro and Cuadrado for 75 minutes and see what happens there. put roda and falcao in front of those 3 and we may have something going there...

my biggest praise about Gio is that he does like to push forward and he does take chances. sure he loses the ball, but that is the only way he will improve. until MacT or LFM get call-ups i don't see any other option available so we have to stick with GioM.

no other player was involved in as many goals as GioM was in the qualifiers and so he was involved in the goal against ecuador and 2 more that were his fault - i concede that. but i think he still needs to be in the lineup. all of us were critical of lara and pinto for constantly rotating the lineups. let bolilo stick with some of his main guns for now and just shuffle it a bit to make cuadrado a regular along with daryo and boom, we'll have a midfield

Re: Colombia's depth chart under "El Bolillo"

It looks like Bolillo more or less has decided on a core group of guys

    GK
    Ospina

    RB
    Zuniga

    Cen BK
    Yepes
Cordoba?(still has shown a consistent partner)

    LB
    Armero

    DM
    Restrepo
    Viafara

    Wingers
    Cuadrado
    Ramos?

    SS
    GMO
    Striker
    Falcao

who's played more mins Ramos or Rodallega?

4-2-3-1? im ok with it, I think the idea is to attack with numbers and have a lot of ball movement

    IMO Keys to 4-2-3-1

    • Have one winger be a true wingback, ie Armero, Marin, Cuadrado, Zuniga, with a fullback that likes to stayback playing behind them , imo, guys like I. Velez, Perea, JD Valencia, H Palacios(if needed)
    • Opposite this winger/wingback have a wingerhas more of a foward's mind. Guys like Roda, D Moreno, Quintero, JP Pino, Mao Molina
imo Elkin Soto was the last true winger Colombia had but he hasnt been great lately

forcing guys to play winger isnt a failure as long as you can give them a broader role

imo i think you have to think of a group of 14, always use at least two subs, Colombia doesnt have a perfect 11.

imo the two best lineups Bolillo cod use based on Bolillo thus far

    1
    -------------Ospina
    -Zuniga---Yepes--Cordoba--Armero
    --------Viafara----Restrepo
    --Cuadrado--Moreno--Moreno
    -------------Falcao
    2
    -----------Ospina
    -Zuniga--Yepes--Cordoba--Armero
    --------Viafara--Restrepo
    --Rodallega--GMo----Quintero
    ------------Falcao

I would like to see get a chance

    -----------Ospina
    Zuniga--Yepes--Perea--Armero
    -------Viafara--Restrepo
    ---Molina--G Moreno--Pino
    -----------Falcao

with the above. GMo could drift wide and either Pino or Molina can make a run as theyve played foward and are aggresive, this movement off the ball could help, plus the team would be left in a 4-4-2 which is still a sound def form in case the play collapes. same for number 1 and 2

    -------------------------------Abel aguilar
    juan cuadrado ------------------------------------------james rodriguez

    ------------------------------gio moreno

    --------------jackson martinez --------------falcao garcia

4-4-2 diamond style good defensive and attacking formation like offensive
for subs hugo rodagella, freddy guarin, victor hugo montano, and maby Juan Pablo Pino and maby carlos valdez if pablo or juan are injuered but i dont like teofilo and i dont like adrian ramos and dont like carlos darwin quintero, and i dont like juan david valencia or viafara or restrepo,i also hate yepes and cordoba

you can't include J-Rod; it's way too early. he's barely scratched the surfact at Porto and needs more playing time in Europe before he's ready for the NT.

Between Aquivaldo, Perea and Yepes - I would probably go with Perea b/c he plays regularly and plays at the highest level. but there are no other good options, yet...

    otherwise it's a good lineup

Guarin is coming back from injury but doesn't really play much either. So I do not understand your logic on not using J-Rod. If he is the best at that spot then he is the best at that spot

James only has 2 substitute appearances for Porto (granted there were paperwork issues before he was cleared). if that's enough to warrant a NT call-up, then yes, i agree with you and he should be called up.

now that i think about it - if yepes and cordoba can get called up and play 0 minutes for their club team, then it should be no different for any other player....

CRZD - you do bring up a very valid point. my only thought process was that since he's 19, he should get his feet wet in europe before being thrusted onto the NT scene. i.e. look at Coutinho with inter - he's had several games for inter before he made his first NT appearance.

Cuadrado has only had 2 appearances this season and 3 or 4 starts all of last year. That hasn't prevented him from being more effective than any other midfielder we have...

James is young but he's far from inexperienced. He was a star for 2 seasons in Argentina and had a great Copa Libertadores. Coutinho had only played about 10 proffessional matches before the season at Inter. But its a moot point. James is not getting called up

thanks for agreeing with me and not to be an ass but Dont ever ever ever ever compare Colombia to Brazil.

Brazil unlimited talent there 5th string sub 20 can probably start on our NT and be the star players

I dont want any "experienced player' not getting playing time called up, they are at the end of their careers. Why stop a player from getting experience. Zapata doesn't have 6 years of NT experience because of that stupid he doesn't have Cordobas experience argument

I'll go with Funaccio. I think it's too early for James. Beside, Bolillo already said that he's not going to touch any sub-20 players before the WC 2011, after that we may call James. As for the centrales, Zapata is one of them of course, I don't want Perea but so far he shoews stability and plays regulary. Yepes and Cordoba are last options, Aquivaldo can fulfill, but we do have a big problem in that position. Other then that I like the lineup, would like to see dirty Sanchez or Guarin instead of Abel.

Re: Colombia's depth chart under "El Bolillo"

Bolillo today announced the call-ups for his eighth friendly, and final one in 2010. As expected, he mostly called up players from the Colombian league. His two non-Colombia-based players are Latin America-based Forwards Giovanni Moreno (Argentina) and Jackson Martinez (Mexico).

Also as expected, Bolillo called up a creative central midfielder in Giovanni Hernández. This will be the first time he picks G. Hernández, and the first time he will play with a true "10".
"Con Giovanni Hernández se logra más seguridad y que no se pierda tan rápido la pelota"
The above picture from Bolillo's press conference earlier today shows how he plans to implement a flat 4-4-2 formation.

    Great work man.

I don't want to nit pick your work, but right now the numbers put Viafara on the top of the CM list. I don't think Cuadrado is that high either being how he has only started once.

I believe G. Hernandez played againsta South Africa, so this would be the second time he gets picked.

    yo no creo!

Looks like Henriquez is out of the running to start at CB under Bolillo he prefers his Santa CB pair.

Anyone think either of those two can replace Cordoba or Yepes? We are really lacking at CBs. Hope that Colombian kid at Sevilla gets loaned to a 1st division team does well and wants to play for us. Only other decent young CB is Ricardo Chara who was loaned to Empoli in Spanish 2nd division. Our only other internation CBs all play in the MLS and the thought of Olave playing on the NT makes me cringe no matter how good he does in the MLS(him being good makes people think the league is worse than it actually is)
