    Sandon
thanks for all the research that you do to provide all the stats you do. when you are compiling these stats do you have a sense of whether or not 4yr college players have a longer MLS career than non-4yr players?

I haven't really noticed a trend one way or the other though logic suggests they tend to get old at about the same time. ;)

Here are the players currently on MLS rosters born in 1977 or earlier. There’s a mix of four-year players, a few who left college early and several internationals.

There are, however, several variables to consider.

*MLS didn’t start Project 40 till late in the 97 season so most of the players they signed out of college (or HS) early aren’t old enough for consideration.

*Goalkeepers play longer, hence there are seven of them on the list.

*Many of the international players are DPs and thus getting a very good pay-day to make it worth their while to keep playing.

*Most four-year college players, specifically because they finished school, have their degree and thus have non-soccer playing career options.

This made me very curious as to what the Americans with no college were doing before they made their way to a MLS roster. Other than the big names of course. These guys just living with their parents on a reserve roster or knocking around in the USL? Also, of these players what percentage are Americans? I'm guessing less than half.

Noticing that NER phenom Diego Fagundez (0 college, some HS, 3 apps last season, couple of goals) is not making the 18 - do the have him playing Development Academy again? If I recall correctly, he is a 95 and can play either 16s or 18s, as well as reserves, or first team.

    Thanks.

The Earthquakes definitely lead the league in most four-year players who start regularly.

On the other end of the spectrum is Philadelphia. Michael Farfan is the only four-year college player who regularly starts for them (though Ray Gaddis has started the last two games as well).

That cuts both ways since he scored it against Ryan Meara and a back line featuring Connor Lade and Stephen Keel. ;)

Re: College soccer & MLS - the writing on the wall says "you can play 4 seasons and still contribute

I know it is bad form to reply my own post, but here it is, for the record: I saw the Revs-NYRB Academy match this past weekend and Revs parents told me Fagundez is playing Reserves games this year. There are about a half dozen other DA players getting some time with Reserves, all of whom have college commitments. So the Revs should have some HGs with NCAA experience in their pipeline...

Re: College soccer & MLS - the writing on the wall says "you can play 4 seasons and still contribute

Perhaps this is worthy of a new thread: outside of good coaching, what do good college programs do to help their players get opportunities at the next level--mainly MLS, but also other professional and perhaps national team opportunities?

One thing I wish my son's D1 program would do is make a quality videotape of every game and make it publicly available. I love Touchline Videos coverage of CSU Bakersfield. I'm sure this helps the Runners get attention from scouts.
