BYU's defense is starting to play a bit more respectably but their offense may be as bad as has been seen out of that school since the 60s. Something like 90 yards passing last week. Back in their heyday, they would have that much in about the first 5-10 minutes of every game. No wonder that frustrated fan with the child on his shoulders was screaming at them after the game in Fort Worth.

Utah meanwhile played a rather lackluster game and still won by 24 points. As noted above, we really need to get better in the turnover margin department. On the special teams, Shaky is having an amazing season. He has already broken the Ute record for punt return yards in a season after only SIX games, has had 2 returns for TDs and came within 3 yards of another TD against Iowa State. Going to get interesting when they hit the challenging part of the schedule in a few weeks, but first up is Colorado State. Can't overlook any team on the schedule, but Kyle is good at making sure the team is focused on playing one game at a time and not looking ahead.

well, on top of the massive game tomorrow we also got this tidbit of information today:
    2011 Utah Football Schedule

Sept. 1 Montana State Salt Lake City
Sept. 10 at USC* Los Angeles, Calif.
Sept. 17 at Brigham Young Provo, Utah
    Sept. 24 open
Oct. 1 Washington* Salt Lake City
Oct. 8 Arizona State* Salt Lake City
Oct. 15 at Pittsburgh Pittsburgh, Pa.
Oct. 22 at California* San Francisco, Calif.
Oct. 29 Oregon State* Salt Lake City
Nov. 5 at Arizona* Tucson, Ariz.
Nov. 12 UCLA* Salt Lake City
Nov. 19 at Washington State* Pullman, Wash.
Nov 26 Colorado* Salt Lake City

schedule is set up nicely for Utah to go to the Pac-12 championship game. the game that will probably determine the Pac-12 South winner is November 5th @Arizona, assuming USC stays on post season probation.

Trips to places like Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and Tucson instead of Fort Collins, Laramie, and Albequerque. (Well we do visit Pullman). Going to be a lot of excitement next year, but Utah has a lot of football left to play this season before contemplating their PAC 12 schedule.

Hey now, those of us who live in Pullman may be pretty pleased at that pending visit!

Actually it is a pretty cool place to be a college sports fan. Here on the Palouse we've had (or will have by the time Friday rolls around) two teams ranked in the top five come to the area - Oregon played at Wazzu, and Boise State will be in town to play Idaho. That happens with pretty much every sport, which is the real benefit to being in a league like the Pac-10: no matter how your own team's season is going, you'll get to see some pretty good football regardless.

I didn't really mean to imply Pullman wasn't a great place. It's just that when you think of the larger PAC-12 cities, you have cities that have attractions which include landmarks such as the Space Needle, Alcatraz, Disneyland, the Pima Air Force Museum, etc, just to name a few. Pullman doesn't have any well-known attractions but given it's size, I have no doubt it has a great college town atmosphere on game day. And I have no doubt that it has a lot to offer visitors in the way of hospitality and I'll likely try to make it up there for a game some year.

lol, Pullman is a shithole (no offense ismitje, truth hurts though). all of eastern washington and oregon is DIRE, it takes a special/crazy kind of person to live out there if you arent a college kid. i've had several family members and friends live out there and all agree, the sooner you can get out the better. he's right though, the sports out there may suck but they get to see some damn good teams come to town fairly regularly. add Utah to that list for next year (despite the complete up and down ass kicking they got last weekend).

I know you guys don't care but I was excited to watch Penn State come from behind to score 35 unanswered points to win on Saturday and give JoePa win #400.

Especially considering what else happened on Saturday (sorry Ute fans).

    its rivalry week
just like old times, the game really doesnt have that much riding on it.
Neither team can win the conference, neither team can really get into a "big bowl" (as I see it, BYU is back in the Las Ve... lets just call it the BYU bowl already)

TCU should get into a BCS bowl, so really this is just posturing as Utah should get the poinsettia (sp?) one as well.

With that said, this game never is nothing. In fact, when its like this, they tend to be the craziest.

Utah's D has been absolutely terribe in the last 3 games while BYU seems to have figured some stuff out. Is BYU peaking at the right time while Utah peaked a bit too early? I dont know.

As a ute fan, though, I have to say this one goes to the good guys. Too many things against BYU for me to think they will be in it tight. Calling it right now: Heaps with a Max Hallesk afternoon throwing multiple ints

No. Utah played the patsies early and have had a tougher schedule lately - that's why they look like they peaked early. BYU played their tough games early and have had nothing but patsies for weeks. That's why they look good all of a sudden. In reality, neither team is any better or worse than they have been all season. Utah by two TD's.

Utah's defense actually played quite well in South Bend, but the offense did very little and the special teams were a complete train wreck. In San Diego, the offense came around very nicely and the special teams turned around 100% and it was the defense who struggled, but they made enough big plays for us to pull out a win.

Even when BYU was 1-4 (after the loss to the Aggies), I predicted that they would be able to comfortably beat the Pokes, Rebels, Rams, and Lobos (good lord those are bad teams) to enter this weekend on a 4 game winning streak.

I usually temper my feelings about college football on this board (since RSL fans include fans of all the local colleges) but I really want this one bad. It's been a year since Max Hall's cowardly dishonest statements (not to mention his chicken shit cheap shot hitting Sylvester in the back and running away like a little girl) and I'm still pissed and hope that Utah blows the Cougars out.

And what was with Utah State this year? They played Oklahoma closer in Norman than they did the Vandals (from Idaho) in Logan. They did finally get a monkey off their back and beat the Cougars for the first time in a long long time. Maybe with the WAC losing all the better teams and replacing them with the likes of Denver and TX-San Antonio over the next few years they can perhaps have a winning season sometime soon.

Yeah, after the BYU whooping I thought that they had possibly turned a big corner, what with the new coach and all. Then they go and stink up the joint with a bunch of weak losses. Maybe next year.....They can at least get one win over BYU again.

That one was really sweet. After Harline's catch in 2006, 4th and 18 in 2007, and last year's OT loss where 2 Ute defenders took themselves out of the play, it was nice to win a close one for a change. I to have to admit this one had to be tough to swallow for Cougar fans. 2 huge Utah mistakes became first down plays (the shanked punt that touched a defender then recovered, and the INT that was then fumbled and recovered) and of course the blocked FG hurt the worst.

I think the Cougars played not to lose in the last few minutes as they had the passing going on the last drive, but then played it safe. If they kept on passing, the outcome might have been different.

If you Y fans are looking for someone to blame, look no further than your own sideline. Bronco's decision in the 3rd quarter to go for it on 4th and 1 instead of kicking a chip shot field goal cost BYU the game. When Utah went up 17-16, instead it would have been 19-17 and BYU could have just run out the clock - no last-minute field goal required.

That decision ranks right up there with the "win by 9, not 2" debacle from the Gary Crowton years.

this is like saying had RSL scored another goal in the FCD game here then they would have advanced.
In sports you cant just alter one play and think that everything that follows would be the same. If Utah is down by 9 instead of 6 they likely go on a 4th down instead of punt, mix up their play calling, or simply get dejected and give up. The truth of it is, though, we have no idea. Hell, maybe they take the following kick to the house and its 7-9 all of the sudden.

Unless its the very last play of the game, saying "doing this instead of that would have won the game" is a complete lie.

    As for the game itself...
    my throat still hurts

    BYU, karma is a bitch
