yes...and he even matched gomez poach for poach. I think FR could bag 30 goals a year playing forward in front of this midfield.
I thought Marseille would have put much more into this match. We're the better side, but this was the only thing they have to play for. I have to think Deschamps is done for after that timid effort.
This is what Uli said regarding new striker Giroud "He is a player who impressed me when Germany played against France," he told RTL. "But his profile is too similar to Mario Gomez's. We want an attacker who can be associated with Gomez."
fyp Anyway, the Bayern juggernaut took a slightly different shape with Ribs & Olic destroying their defense instead of the 'Mez & Rob. Olic was a big part in the '10 CL run and it was nice to see him get a brace in front of the home town crowd. Well done. Marseille were pretty weak, but tell that to BvB! Onwards to Real Madrid! I hope we can make Khedira & Oezil regret not signing for Bayern! Wish the 1st game was at Madrid (who decides these things?) but we'll get it done.
Olic's signing with Wolfsburg, it's practically a done deal if it hasn't already been confirmed. Anyways, Marseille was horrible. First 15 minutes they put up a good fight but afterwards they were just bad. They were so bad that it doesn't say much about Bayern's chances with Madrid. That tie is likely to be a classic, could be 6+ goals between the two teams unless Heynckes decides to turn all out defensive.
I don't want to claim Gomez isn't important but what Bayern lacks with him is the flexibility to attack. There's a reason he's a system player, something Heynckes acknowledged. He is perfect for it and he is reliable to score when opportunities present themselves. He is quite possibly the best poacher since van Nistelrooy. His instinct is second to none. However, what he doesn't offer is the security of setting up others and bringing them into the game. Tonight we saw Olic drift left, drift right, come back into midfield and link up in close space with Ribery, Mueller, Alaba, and Kroos as Bayern moved forward and they were at their most unpredictable in years. When you play like this it's impossible for any side to deal with because of the individual skill. Bayern actually played a narrow attacking game for once. Ribery cut into the middle and created 1-2's with Olic. Kroos came forward and got space to shoot because Olic dragged players around enough. These qualities for me have always been the last remaining tactical option the team needs to embrace to reach that next level.
Yeah, in this sense it was a great game to watch for me and probably the rest of you guys here. But in every other sense it was a really awful game. I imagine that's about what it looks like to see a fixed game. No one seemed to think the game mattered at all.
This is a valid criticism when he's not in form, because he adds absolutely nothing when he isn't scoring. But if he's not in a slump the ability of Gomez to score is so valuable that it means more than doing all the little things.
