    Re: Apertura 2006 TV schedule

    As posted on soccerTV.com:

Club America-Chivas Guadalajara on Univision drew highest U.S. TV
viewership for a professional club soccer match in 12 years
    -----------------------------------------------------------

The 2nd Leg of the Mexican First Division "Torneo Apertura"
semifinal series between Club America of Mexico City
and Chivas Guadalajara recorded the highest U.S. television viewership
for a professional club soccer match (a soccer match NOT involving
national teams) in the past 12 years, according to data
collected by Nielsen Media Research as part of the
Nielsen Television Index (NTI) national general market
    television rating system.

The Club America-Chivas Guadalajara match, dubbed the
"superclasico" because the match pits the two biggest professional
soccer clubs in Mexico, drew 2.048 million U.S. TV households (1.8% rating),
and 3.956 million U.S. TV viewers age 2 and over when it
aired live in the U.S. on Univision on Sunday December 10
at 9pm Eastern Time/6pm Pacific Time.

Not only did the viewership of the "superclasico" surpass the viewership
of any other professional club soccer match on US television (including both
Major League Soccer and the Mexican First Division) in the past 12 years,
the US TV viewership of the match surpassed the US TV viewership of every
National Hockey League (NHL) telecast on both NBC Sports
and OLN (now Versus) during the 2005-2006 NHL season
with the exception of Games 3-7 of the 2006 Stanley Cup Final series
    on NBC Sports.

The viewership of the "superclasico" serves as a reminder of the effect
of immigration of Mexicans to the U.S. primarily in search of economic
opportunities, and also serves as a reminder to Major League Soccer (MLS)
officials how much work the 11-year-old MLS still
has left to do in order to catch up to the Mexican First Division
as the most popular televised professional club soccer
    entertainment product in the U.S.

The defunct North American Soccer League (NASL), which folded
in 1984, averaged about 2 million households on ABC Sports
during the 1979 season, before the launch of cable sports TV
    powerhouse ESPN.

Chivas/America is usually on top when the Friday LA Times list of most watched sporting events of the last week comes out, though this time, perhaps the USC/UCLA game will top it.. Maybe not though..;)

Absolutely. I am actually very excited about this. What happened 12 years ago? (1994? Does the world cup count, or just club soccer?)

More power to the Mexican viewers. Their football is improving every year as evidenced by the play of Toluca and Pachuca in the Copa Sudamericana.
MLS is moving in the right direction- we must be patient.

The real problem is the amatuers at US soccer. With them at the helm we are in big trouble. Hopefully the MLS guys will guide soccer in this country over the coming years, not the pencil pushers at the USSF.

It's just club futbol so it isn't the WC, my guess is that they started tracking Mexican futbol 12 years ago.

AFTER such good rating this coming-up clasico COULD have one of the Lowest ratings in a while, im only saying this because America comes into this game looking pretty bad meanwhile chivas is playing better than ever so it doesnt generate the excitement of other clasicos for many of us who are neither chivas or america fans. I usually dont miss a clasico because its filled with so much hype usually and can be very entertaining but this one is lacking a bit of that, probably has to do with the fact that chivas has been dominating the series as of late. Oh well im not crazy about it, if i have nothing better to do, ill probably tune in, after all last weekds chivas-pumas and america-cruz azul dissapointed big time! If most none america and chivas fans feel the way i do about this game then you can expect lower ratings then usuall.

I was also watching super estadio earlier tonight and according to them theres still alot of tickets available for the game, which is unusual for a clasico specially one being played at Azteca on a sunday evening. My guess is the americanistas are stARTING to get fed up with the mediocrity of their team and are not responding and its showing on the stands as well! This could well be an overwhelmingly home crowd away from home for chivas!!!!

I like the comparison to hockey ratings.

I'm impressed it surpassed the December semifinal match.
