Heh, touché. Though, the real chainsaw stays with the victory log. He walks around with a chainless saw the rest of the match.

a couple years ago they would do the log climbing and then take a slice from the top. there used to be a 30 foot (or so) log in the south end (where the scoreboard is now), every goal Timber Jim would climb to the top, take the slice off and then come down in typical logger fashion. im not sure why they stopped doing it after 2008 (i think it was, maybe 2009).

Congrats to Portland. I'm a long time Fire fan, but seeing that fantastic support warms my heart as a soccer and MLS fan. Looking forward to the return trip to Toyota Park. Section 8 will be ready.

I think this sums it up.

"In no other MLS city in the country do four local television stations send live trucks to the stadium on game day at 4 a.m. to broadcast for the morning news. But that's exactly what happened on Thursday in the wee hours. "

[Hate Canzano but he does illustrate a point]

I was very impressed by the whole scene last night and have been giving big props to the Timbers and TA on numerous threads on BS and elsewhere, but...a little perspective is in order on this point.

I believe quite a few MLS cities would see four TV trucks at the stadium for live reports if the circumstance were the home team is an expansion team and it's their home opener in a newly renovated stadium.

    Just sayin'... :D

Last night was awesome, though; good for Portland and the whole league. Well done.

That's not all, oh no, that is not all:

House Resolution passed in Oregon that April 14th is Portland Timbers Day
Oregon Historical Society opens exhibit on NASL Timbers
Timber Joey themed shake at local burger franchise [Burgerville]
    Tri-Met adds extra service
Portland Trailblazers hand out Timbers season schedules to fans earlier in the week, Timber Joey fires T-shirts from a "chainsaw", game announced by the Blazers PBP during broadcast
Four Trailblazers attend home opener [Okay, so one is French and another Spanish]

I think those are a few more indicators of how strong the presence of this "new" team is to the city.

    Feels pretty good.

Timber Jim did climb a giant pole to cut the log disks with the old NASL Timbers. Then he did it until a couple years before he retired with the new version.

His arthritis got bad, so then he did it on the ground, and that's how Joey does it.

Jim also used to rappell out of the rafters of the canopy, chain saw and all.

Respect. Not even begrudging respect, 4 real propz. This coming from a Seattle native and sounders fan since the kingdome and memorial stadium days.

Of course I've been in the Bitter End before many matches and sat in and around 107 before so I wasn't surprised.

Awesome show guys. Amazing job representing yourselves, your city, your club and the PNW. Keep it up!

Also, great results during your home-stand!

Edit: Sorry, I guess I am supposed to "shut it". Pardon me!

Cascadia occupies the middle of the Western Conference. They should occupy 1, 2, 3 with Timbers naturally 1, and Sounders 3, right? ;)

I was baffled and pleasantly surprised to see Seattle in 2009 having seen them in 2001 at the Timbers' first Seattle away match. But now everything is sweet all around.

In a perfect world it would be that way, with minor adjustments :). My favorite part about the rivalries in the PNW is that Vancouver always seems to be the neutral. What I mean to say is that fans on both sides ( I hate generalizing people into monolithic blocks but...) always seem to say "I hate you guys,....but Vancouver is cool".

The funny part being that this probably pisses them off much moreso than if both fanbases hated them.
