I was thinking the same thing

I like what Balance said eariler about actually using creativity to get a players attention. I think it was Philly last year who sang "99 bottles of beer on the wall" to Peter Vermes after he got a DUI. It was hilarious (I will look for video). It essentially went "99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer. Peter Vermes, give us your keys. 98 bottles of beer on the wall" No "******** you wanker, put down the beer before you ********ing drive" type stuff, just good old fashioned fun jabbing at players/coaches.

Side note: I'm not for, at least not yet, a chant that digs at Davies. The kid is still in a special place for me. He scored in Mexico... IN MEXICO

    Re: Leg 2 - Qtr Finals - CONCACAF - RSL v Columbus p/i/p

And therein lies the rub. I would personally find something like that over the line. It was funny when the SoB's did it to Vermes, because it was a personal problem--he got a DUI, and nobody else got hurt. But like others said, someone died when Davies was in that car. I think mocking someone's death is way more offensive than a so-over-the-top-it's-ridiculous chant with profanity. Different interpretations of offensiveness, as I said before.

Which is not to say we won't get in our digs at players' personal issues. We've got things planned for Beckham and his love of hookers, and Donovan's alimony suit. But some things are a little too far. I don't want the RCB to wind up doing the kind of chants that make the news in England, stuff about players' dead kids and the like. That's where my line is. Your mileage may differ.

Oh, and georg, two things: First, we've got lots of inoffensive chants we'd love you to jump in on. Second, don't leave the bar so fast next time and I'll hit you back on the Jameson ;).

Well said. Perfectly well said. I'll back this post 110%.

I would imagine this sentiment is shared by many, MANY people not only on here, but at RioT as well.

That is not true at all. Just ask Will Hesmer.

No. In fact it was absolutely and completely UNnecessary.

    Except that you don't.
it is another clear cut case of you trying to say your values are superior to others values.

I think the chant is stupid, but to come out with that holier than you bs is where you lose me. It gets pretty offensive quite frankly when you once again try to say your jello and hash brown casserol culture is more important than my beer and ribs culture.

First of all, I am really sorry I offended and hurt you. Secondly, I made no reference to any one religion. Thirdly, the point I am making is dont push your "values" on me. They are no more or less valid than mine. There is middle ground to be had here. It was the way the discussion was started that set me off.

    Sorry Randall.

I know. What a shock right?

My point stands though. It is every bit as offensive to me when you claim your values are of a higher order than mine. It gets as old as my BS posts.

A final note from me. There is a reason why we have not lost a home game in 34. I would submit that it is partially due to the WAY over the top vulgarity that we have. It is not allowed in other stadiums. I feel that it is BECAUSE of the milk toast rep of Utah that it throws opposing players off. I may be totally wrong, but I really dont think so.

Sorry again to those I offended. I doubt very much I will get an apology from those of you who offended me.

I don't post on here much anymore, because of things like this. All I have to say is this: it's not worth it. Nothing will be accomplished in these discussions. A few people will get angry, others will make good points, others will say terrible, unforgivable things, and when it's all over, nothing will have come of it. No change will come of it.

Consider the fact that there are what, two people in this discussion arguing in favor of profanity maybe three, and what, five or six people arguing against it. How many fans are in the stadium. Let's say the two people were convinced to never use a chant with a swear in it again. Then what? There's at least fifty, probably more like 150 people that are shouting these chants, and guess what...they're not frequenting these message boards. They'll never know or care that you want them to change.

If you really want things to change, you'll have to do it yourself. Go sit with Section 26 who doesn't like to shout obscenities. Sit on the other end of the stadium where the chants are unintelligible babble. Invent your own similar, non-profane chant to shout with all your family and friends each time an offensive chant comes up to drown it out. All those things might have real effects. Angry words on a message board site accomplish nothing other than bringing you down. Believe me, I know from experience. I butted my head on that wall for a long time before I finally learned my lesson and gave it up.

Good luck to you all. Go RSL!

Essentially, the goal of the SG's is to create so much noise that the opposing team can't think.

The goal of the Anti-Vulgarity is to get them to stop...

The compromise would come if there were enough Anti-Vulgar people that would begin a chant each time the opposing goalkeeper took a goal kick and the SG's noise was drowned out. Of course the SG's would join in with the non-profane chant.

I never once said that my values, or anyones values were more valuable than yours. All I said is that the SG's can try and be a bit more sensitive to others values. It's possible to be intimidating without being over-the-top vulgar.

Ok, I'm here and I'm not going to beat this dead horse yet again. While I have a big distaste for most of the prudish Mormons around here that can't handle someone saying something that melts their virgin ears and who think that everyone is inherently unhappy if they aren't doing things that score enough points to get you into the Mormon heaven. I know this is a small minority of most Mormons. Dadof6, especially, is very tolerant and I really respect him for what he is, knowing full well he respects me for what I am. Respect is a two way street.

And let's also face facts, for every one person who yells asshole on a goal kick, there are as many that yell ********. I speak enough Spanish to understand the meaning of this. To be honest, I also have a big problem with those in the south end who will only join in with the chants that have the F word in it and won't do any of our other chants.

I have sat in other places outside the south end, it's hard to tell what's being said in the south end from as close as section 4, just a few sections over unless you know what they are saying.

I use the vulgarity, I use it at home even, in front of my kids. I'm not perfect, but you can go ******** yourself if you think you can tell me how to raise my kids. I am not presuming to tell you how to raise yours.

The fatality does take that one off the table, good call on the folks who pointed it out. Bad call on my part to pick that particular example.

But, the general point of using creativity to get inside their head rather than random non-specific vulgarity is still valid.

Why did you have to go and bring the UN into it? You are clearly refering to me teaching about the UN and being something of an afficionado of the organization. Now I am pissed, too.

Bottom line, the UN is necessary.

Talking to people you don't like tends to work better than shooting at them.

If you don't like what someone is saying:

    1. Ask them to stop nicely.
If that doesn't work, then figure out another solution, like—
    2. Chant something else to at least drown the words out of your own ears (and the ears of your children, presuming that's who you're trying to protect).

My boy's only 7 months old, so it's not a battle for me yet, but I'm prepared to yell something more innocuous when I feel deleterious noise is reaching his mind—something like this, maybe:

    Hesmer, Hesmer...

GOOD LUCK (with that) SOCCER BALL [kind of a stretch?]
DON'T KICK IT BACK TO R-S-L!
    DON'T LOSE YOUR COOL.
    DON'T SLIP AND FALL.
AND DON'T FEEL BAD WHEN WE SCORE A GOAL!

    etc. etc.

In a way, it's almost great that the SGs throw out chants that make us sensitive—and sometimes mute—folks cringe. It's as good of motivation as any to get us to add to the atmosphere.

All of this. You don't like what the south end is saying, drown us out.

    great article
It really tells about the nature of man, I think. S/he can be great and show some tremendous compassion. However, s/he can also be disgusting and vile. Pushing it way too far and mocking the death(s) of another.

One of the most amazing things to me about Milan fans, when I was young and "picking" a team, was the time they sang "You'll never walk alone" in honor of the Liverpool fans that lost their lives.
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFX07w2-4ls"]YouTube - AC Milan fans singing you'll never walk alone in tribute of Liverpool fans who lost their lives at Hillsborough[/ame]

    We are all humans
this is, at the end of the day, a dumb sport
Please dont let this EVER happen in the states. The moment it does, I remove myself from the club (if it is our club that does it)

    15-32 "well said"
I think Lurpy brought this up first with the analogy of a cheer aimed at Charlie Davies, he made the point correctly that such a chant would go way over the line.
Still want a song I can sing with my kids!
Perhaps we should focus on Braun's Mom:D
