Always happy to see a team from my soccer humble country play. Too bad I can see them! Don't have FSC+ or UDN (<---Univision Deportes right?)
I saw that this AM but thought better of posting it. I sort of chuckled, since it came from Dom who treated CCL as a semi-reserve competition in the past.
We all really know he just said that for the cameras. Unless he changed his view to CCL > MLS CUP. Maybe he's going crazy. The official line up last week was a 4-3-3.
I think Dom has always valued CCL. Folks who judge him by how he handles the games are assuming that playing the starters every game would produce better results. FCD tried that last year and it tanked both their league and their CCL. I think folks should leave their minds open to the idea that Dom actually knows what he is doing. And that does not mean wins are guaranteed. There are three options: 1-rotate the squad; 2-play starters in all games; 3-sacrifice league games. 2 and 3 are unacceptable. It doesn't make sense to back off on your bread and butter (domestic league). You have to take care of that first. And #2 is asking too much of your players and can lead to injuries, burnout, and losing at everything! And guys, I'm not being an apologist here. Remember back to circa 2008 and I was critical of Kinnear for not playing third stringers in a reserve game two days before a decisive CCL group stage game in El Salvador.
I think Dom wants to win every game and I have never questioned that. I mean we have all seen Dom over there sweating blood in Cup matches, sometimes having a go at one of our guys specifically because he is demanding better football or at the least better decision making. He knows what it means to play against other nation's domestic champions away from home and the like. What I do think what needs more effort from him and the back room is now that we have completely moved on from the De Ro, Mully, Waibel, Wade, Ching in Prime, younger Davis/Rico Cup winning sides is that those men as professionals were a lot more street smart and gritty than what we have now. We are even way past Stuie, Cameron and Hainault! Having Rico back is a huge plus as he and Davis can lead by example but the focus from others in our jersey has to be better for CCL serious discussion of becoming the first MLS side to win it. Dom needs to get more outta of our current guys when our side is in the hunt for international silverware and this means that when 1-0 up to Santos and the return leg is down there, our current guys struggle to come out ready for what they are about to face. And it shows! I don't place this ALL at Dom's feet but he sure needs to find a way to get guys like Bobby to become better leaders out there and not be snoozing or strolling to a back pass so the Santos guys pick up the agg. equalizer goal freebie early on and put the rest of the game in a choke hold. Perhaps flying down there earlier or something in training to get the guys jacked up for the midweek tests.
Although it seems like we would always want our 1st team out there are several reason not to: -The obvious fatigue factor. -To expand on the fatigue factor, even if starters are rested sometimes we just don’t see the drive and effort in a midweek CCL game. -Further, I think bench players tend to play these games with a bit more to prove. -Finally, I think these games are critical in the development of young players. Besides being actually games, they actually mean something and sometimes in hostile environments. I just keep thinking about all the CCL games Holden, Cameron, and Wondo logged. Is Lopez allowed to play in CCL?
Probably. Teams in the CCL don't have to turn in a roster list until 7 days before their first game. Olimpia doesn't begin play until August 21. I don't think they would turn in a roster until they had to just in case they bring in some new players. Their league starts next week. However, it is possible that they already turned in their list with Lopez's name on it. If they did, then he would not be eligible to play for any other team.
Goals change over time. After winning acclaim in the league, it's now time to go international, and get some silverware.
The Dynamo is a household name in many countries of Eastern Europe.... oh sorry you meant the Houston Dynamo?? Yeah it'll be a while!
Don't forget what we're taking and how we feel about it either. Soon we'll be walking in that orange wonderland
