The Blue Devils are the first men's soccer team to face a postseason ban due to low APR scores. They just barely missed the cut. http://articles.courant.com/2012-04...ttee-on-academic-performance-student-athletes
Seems to be an unfortunate pattern in Connecticut as the Huskies are banned from next years NCAA basketball tournament because of low APR
Interesting response by the coach to the story that ran in the student newspaper. Apparently he went around throwing stacks of the paper in to the trash. http://www.insidehighered.com/quicktakes/2012/05/09/coachs-questionable-public-relations-strategy
Oh sure, he can do this but he can't announce his frikkin' recruits! Green has tenure - he's been at CCSU since 85 - so he won't get fired over this but combined with his team's performance in the class room, he really should be suspended over it. It's a university. Exchange of ideas, censorship, free speech, yada, yada. Plus, it's 2012, dude. There's this called the "Internet" - I can't explain it but I here it's a series of tubes - and most people get their information that way. Even the CCSU newspaper. See, lookee here: http://centralrecorder.com/2012/05/...opies-of-student-newspaper-in-student-center/ http://centralrecorder.com/2012/04/29/soccer-story/ (I think this is the story he was upset about and it seems pretty innocuous and, in some ways, sympathetic. Maybe it was a different article.) So throwing away the paper doesn't help you accomplish your goal, it just makes you look like a petulant old goat that can't handle criticism, even when it's warranted. Combine all that with the fact that CCSU isn't any good ON the field, despite playing in a weak conference and in a region with a lot of talent (and, in fairness, a lot of competition for the talent), it's pretty obvious the world has passed Green by. I've said the before but the NUMBER ONE rule for non-revenue sport coaches is DON'T do anything that embarrasses the school and Green has violated that rule twice, first by being academically ineligible for the post-season and now by throwing away student newspapers. This story WILL go viral - that Internet thing again - and you it's a matter of time before the likes of Deadspin pick up on it. Again, he has tenure so I doubt he's immediately fired. BUT, I can see him getting nudged out the door over this and whenever his contract is up, it likely won't be renewed. PS - ANNOUNCE YOUR RECRUITS! That way, when you do something that makes you seem like a complete douche bag, people - OK, me - might have some sympathy for you.
And, we're viral. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dan-reimold/soccer-coach-steals-150-c_b_1501363.html http://www.mlive.com/newsflash/inde...ashed-papers/a8e3b50c8cc2465797b2c419e8eeb6b2
Green continues to get trashed in his own community. http://www.courant.com/sports/other/hc-jacobs-column-0511-20120511,0,4705816.column?page=1 http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/...ol-Newspaper-Freedom-of-Speech-150293215.html
The one thing that could take down UC Santa Barbara as a national power is a postseason ban due to grades. I hope it never happens to us. I feel for the fans of CCSU and any players who actually kept their grades up. I hope they bounce back in 2013. Central Connecticut was 10-8-1 overall in 2011. But their coach needs to be cut loose. Afraid of a little bad press, is he? It goes with the territory of being a head coach regardless of sport
The school's punishment was announced today. Head coach Shaun Green was suspended without pay 60 days and forced to sit out the first four games of the season. Assistant coach Paul Wright was fired. http://www.courant.com/sports/college/hc-central-coach-shaun-green-0516-20120515,0,4240089.story Between no post-season and missing four games, it's gonna be a short season for Green.
I went to see Central a couple of times two years ago and was very disappointed. I went when they were playing my alma mater and was very surprised about how poorly they played. All kick and run. I had some of the player's parents in front of me and candidly asked them if it's always like this and they grumbled "yes". So I decided to go back to some games this year and unfortunately not much has changed. It's too bad, because Central is right down the street from me and it's easy for me to catch games and I'd love to bring my son to the games (he's 7) so he can learn from watching them. Not the best example unfortunately. Hopefully they improve and hopefully Green learns his lesson. I'd rather make the longer trip to Uconn instead.
I don't get why the Ass't Coach gets fired, the atheltic department gets their budget reduced, but the guy with the most experience and in the leadership position gets a suspension and homework assignment. There must be more to the story becuase it seems like everyone is being told you should have known better, except the guy in charge with 28 seasons in his rear view mirror.
Tenure. Green, an associate professor at Central, received his tenure from the University in 1991. http://ccsu.prestosports.com/sports/msoc/coaches/green_shaun00
It's got to be it. Because combined with the embarrassment of this scandal and what led to it - being the first and only (so far) D-I soccer program ineligible for the postseason for failing to get a good enough academic score, it's not like the team has been very good on the field of late to justify keeping Green around. In the past 15 years, CCSU has had one season where they were more than two games over .500, going 11-3-4 in 2003. They also had a Cinderella run in 2007, making the NCAA Tournament despite a .500 record then upsetting Harvard and Tulsa before falling to UMass in the Sweet 16. Green deserves full credit for that run, though it's his only appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 27 seasons. But that run is countered by the past 15 years where they've had 9 seasons where they failed to post a winning record. Overall under Green, CCSU is 239-214-51. At first glance, that seems like a lot of wins but it's also a lot of losses and it averages (when rounding up) to an annual record of 9-8-2. So, in exchange for getting the team academically ineligible for postseason and bringing all sorts of bad publicity on the school for this student paper stunt, Green is giving the school one game over .500 a year and one trip to the NCAA tournament every quarter century. He better thank his luck stars for that tenure because it's hard to imagine the school keeping him otherwise.
So not only is CCSU ineligible for the postseason, turns out that of ALL the non-revenue sports in D-I, there was only ONE other that is academically ineligible under this new system. The other is Northern Colorado wrestling. That's it. http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas...nnecticut-huskies-9-others-sit-postseason-apr Again, we're talking ALL the non-revenue sports. Skiing, baseball, lacrosse, track, hockey, volleyball, field hockey, tennis, rifle, bowling, swimming, golf, water polo, gymnastics, softball, rowing, fencing, wrestling and, yes, soccer. We're talking, literally, thousands of programs. Well done, Central Connecticut. I wonder if their coach will try and shut down ESPN.com or delete this post to keep the word from getting out about how incompetent they were to allow this to happen.
At the very lea At the very least...that's a helluva lot of newspapers he would have to try to get rid of
It makes no difference in their conference though.. They never win the confrence, or make it to post season play anyway... ...
Actually, the Gauchos were penalized with a scholarship reduction twice due to low APRs, most recently four years ago. They've righted the ship since then, though they have the fourth-lowest APR score among men's soccer programs. Their current four-year score of 924 would result in a postseason ban under the APR standards that take effect in 2014 (require a four-year score of 930).
The worst part for CCSU is that the single-year scores for the past two years (846 and 857) will stick around, while the 952 they scored in 2007-08 will not be part of the calculation next year. They need a single-year score better than 952 in 2011-12 or they'll be penalized further in 2013-14, with a postseason ban as well as a limit on spring exhibitions and a reduction of regular-season contests. They'll have to score close to 1,000 in 2012-13 and 2013-14... or they will fall under the cut-line again in 2014-15. UNC Greensboro is in a danger zone. Their last two single-year APRs are 841 and 878. They need a single-year score of 906 or better in 2011-12 or they will be penalized next season.
As I said, a postseason ban is the only thing that would take us down as a national power and it is what I fear the most. The fact that we are only ahead of North Florida, UNC Greensboro, and the aforementioned Central Connecticut State is disgusting. TVS has two or three years to increase the mark otherwise we are in serious trouble. UC Irvine could be joining us as well. They are sitting right on the cutoff with a four-year score of 931 so they do not exactly have much room for error.
