I don't know why people were saying that Marathon would settle for a Tie... Saprissa? Sure, but Marathon? They had nothing to win helping Saprissa, and they would instead face a much harder quarterfinal game....
I agree, dropping two points at home against arguably the weakest team of all that made it to the group phase is what kicked Saprissa out of the tournament. This was indeed the Group of Death, decided in the last game and with a tie in points for second. Congrats to Marathon and Cruz Azul and good luck in the rest of the tournament.
Sad that Saprissa got eliminated. I do believe that they were playing better than cruz azul in this tournament and deserved to move on.
can we close this thread now? lol well, the season is over for us, i guess we are going to win the local championship one more time and try again next year, it su cks... that what we get for not beating the DCU reserves at home, shi tty i guess i will have to cheer for the islanders now
For a team (Deportivo Saprissa in this case) to have 10 points and not finish in the top two in a group of this format is rare. Here are some statistics of double round-robin groups of four in the UEFA Champions League: 2007-2008 Group Stage: 8 groups with the average points for the third place team equaling 6.625 and 6 of the 8 teams having exactly 7 points (one had 6 and one had 5) 2006-2007 Group Stage: In Group A Werder Bremen finished third with 10 points. In that group Levski Sofia lost all their games and did even worse than D.C. United in CCL Group A. The other 7 third place teams in UEFA had 8 points or less.
I still can't believe it, the only thing that shocked me more than Saprissa getting knocked out was my team getting knocked out of MLS cup this weekend. Next year Morado, next year...(hopefully Colombus wins the cup and we qualify for next year again).
