El Piña Villanueva sería el reemplazante de Walter Montillo.

Did Villanueva not go to the WC because of this move to Qatar?

Good question: tbh, Valdivia too plays in the Middle East (UAE to be exact) and he was still called up regularly during WCQ and even made the WC squad.

I wouldn't say Villanueva's move to Qatar ended his NT career, but for the time being it def. did not help that he went there, especially considering his age and the fact that his stin in England (Blackburn) was not that bad.

Currently, there is speculation ongoing in the Chilean press that he might come back to Chile to sign for la U.

I hope he does...but I doubt it...Pelusso already has the men he wants...I don't think la U will spend money unnecessarily...I bet he would not be cheap either.

Villanueva runs the show in Shabab masterclass

    Al Shabab 4 // Al Dhafra 0

DUBAI // A Carlos Villanueva tour de force handed Al Shabab their second Pro League win last night, the Chilean midfielder excelling in the hosts’ 4-0 rout over Al Dhafra at Al Maktoum Stadium.

Villanueva, who failed to impress during a stint at Blackburn Rovers, the English Premier League side, tormented the timid Al Dhafra defence throughout, setting up two goals and scoring one as the Dubai side coasted home.

“Carlos was the key,” said Paulo Bonamigo, Shabab’s Brazilian manager. “In terms of ball-possession, orchestrating attacks and creating chances he was our central player. He makes the whole team play.”

Shabab dominated the early proceedings but were unable to convert chances through the Brazilian forward Julio Cesar, twice, and Dawood Ali.

Abbas Lawal, a lone threat in the away side’s ranks, had Dhafra’s first sight of goal – the Nigerian forward firing narrowly over from a tight angle. That chance, however, was a rarity and only Mohammed al Tamimi’s smart save low to his left stopped Villanueva’s free-kick finding the bottom corner.

Villanueva’s influence was increasing and the Chilean’s dizzy turn and cross was turned home by Lamine Diarra – the Senegalese striker’s second of the season – to hand Shabab a well-earned lead in the 41st minute.

Dhafra’s forwards ensured they began the second half on the brighter side, but a defensive shambles allowed Ali to score in the 57th minute after Cesar’s initial shot was blocked by al Tamimi.

Cesar scored Shabab’s third when he collected Villanueva’s clever lob, rounded the goalkeeper and fired home in to an empty net. Villanueva’s slaloming run and shot completed the rout.

Said Bonamigo of Villanueva’s strike: “His goal will give him extra motivation and confidence because now we must turn the league page over and start our cup adventure.”
