A list of needs: I'll start, 1. 10 million dollars for an MLS franchise fee. Who's got me? Lurie? Toll Boys? Perelmans? Tuttlemans? Don't be shy, step right up. PM when you have got the check ready.
2. A stadium that can be converted from an Olympic stadium after the 2016 games into a smaller stadium to be used by the Philly MLS team, the re-charged Charge, and the Lacrosse team, the Barrage. The stadium will of course be privately funded 100%, including site acquisition. (I'm available for stadium design services...) 3. Media coverage (read: 610 WIP) that does not hate soccer (they hate it because they don't understand it). Media coverage must not include Comcast Sportsnet, because they are small-minded for a huge company; they would monopolize the team and not broadcast their games to the diaspora, keeping the fan base shackled here. Superstation coverage is what brought the Cubs Nation into being, same could be done for Philly MLS. 4. A good name for the team, NOT Philadelphia Union FC or anything like that. FC means football club in euro-speak; football means something else States-side and it is not a club, it is a huge business.
WIP pisses me right off...particularly Macnow, I want to kick in the groin. I have ranted about him before, but I just can't stand the way he automatically just blows off soccer. 5. Someone to "discipline" 610.
Macnow disappoints me. Other than his views on soccer he is the most sensible host they've got. I know that's not saying much, but you would hope that someone who is as intelligent as he is would be more open minded.
I just say keep building tall buildings so Billy Penn can't see out of the skyscrapers around him. Then pass tax reform and put better police in University City and promote West Philadelphia as a great place to live and.... oh sorry.
Where would you put a SSS? Ben Franklin SC - "The Bennies" The mascot would be a turkey Franklin argued with our founding fathers that the turkey was a far nobler bird than the eagle. Logo could contain a silouette of Ben, or a kite, or the turkey. Colors: maroon / orange trim. When I marry Alexandra Kerry, I'll have my mother in law make Heinz the shirt sponsor. Stadium will combine the elements of Seogwipo in S. Korea with the luxury suites in Ford Field (Detroit Lions).
The turkey bit seems far too open to ridicule for a Philadelphia team. And how do you get away with jerseys that will resemble Virginia Tech and the Redskins?
Unfortunately, this is explicitly against city zoning ordinances. There has to be "view corridors" maintained around city hall/billy penn so that people can always see him up there. I think city hall is a piece of crap and should be demolished, not preserved. but that is slightly off topic here...
I hope you're kidding. No Ben Franklin, no Liberty Bell, nothing from the 18th century. We are in the 21st century now, let's live in the present and future, not the past.
What are the chances of developing a business plan to submit to Lurie. Would this be something fathomable? I would love to try something like this.
What are they planning to do with land the Vet was on? Turn it into more parking lots? Would it work as the site for a SSS?
they are going to put a parking lot there, supposedly. they are months behind, though; it was supposed to be complete by now.
It was assigned as "gradual availability". which basically means, "whenever it's done, it's done. got a problem with that?"
If I ran the world not only would we get a SSS but we would convince everyone in the region to take SEPTA to the sports complex instead of driving, and that having to sit next to someone you don't know on the ride down might not actually be a bad thing. Until then, yes, the parking is definitely necessary.
Tell him you want to sing his praises about how well he's done covering the Fran Dunphy to La Salle story.
Actually, I just thought of this... ...going along the line of reasoning of the renamed "FC Dallas" front office, we can petition Jeff L to establish an MLS club and call them "FC Birds." It would work complimentary with the Eagles...both teams would have the same owner. Kind of a mutual respect thing. FC Birds
I'll say this again; FC means football club. in America, football is a different sport, and it is not a club, it is a major league sport. We are not europeans, we should not adpopt their team-naming conventions. We have our own tradition, let's stick with that. No FC, no SC, no more United, none of that. I still like the Philadelphia Scythe...
