I will say that Gomez may take until the winter break to get very good. Though he did look very sharp and on top of his game yesterday, I would like to him start in a few days and then Mandzukic perhaps to start vs Dortmund.

    Expertly stated.

My only disagreement with Gomez fans was that he would just 'instantly' resume his spot in the lineup. After some time, yes, but instantly after such a long lay-off was just ridiculous, especially if one is aware of the way Bayern slowly integrates their players back into the fold.

I am excited to see what he can do. You are right in that Mandzukic is a solid back up, and was and still will be on occasion the necessary starter biding time for Gomez to be fully fit.
Pizarro was insurance and a well thought out and rewarding plan.

    2012 - Pizarro, Mandzukic vs 2011- Olic, Peterson.........LMAO........ glorious isn't it?!!!! :)

Pizarro left because he asked for wages equal to what Drogba earned at Chelsea iirc.

I hope he simply does not pick up where he left off as far as scoring.

He was great in the first half of last season - but he wasn't in the second part. Some people forget that.

He only had 10 goals in the second part of last season in the Bundesliga - 3 of it against Hoffenheim (2 were the so important 5:0 and 6:0) - all but a penalty in Berlin in home matches. He has not scored against the no. 1, 3, 4 or 5 of the Bundesliga table...

Some sparks like the goal against Real but really not enough for the front man at Bayern.

When he picks up his form of 2010/11 or of the first part of last season, yes - but please not that of the second half...

Obviously I don't know what Drogba earned at the time but Pizarro asked for 4,5m € net a year while he was on a ~3m € net contract and he didn't have a great season (Magath was sacked, we missed the CL places...). So Hoeneß declined to pay him that amount of money and let him go. What made the Pizarro transfer painful was rather his replacement.

Back then Uli Hoeneß signed Miroslav Klose for outrageous 15+3m € (1year contract left + 28 years old) and gave him the money Pizarro asked for instead (4,5m net) and we all know how that turned out. Aside from the first 6 months and 3 months under Klinsmann "Bundesmiro" was a disaster at Bayern München sitting out his fat contract until he left for Rome and stated "I lost 5kg for the WC compared to the time I got my fat paychecks from Bayern München".

If it wasn't for the Klose fiasco to replace Pizarro it would have been a reasonable choice to let the Peruvian go but well, you're always smarter afterwards ain't ya?

Yes, and he may not be solely responsible for that letoff. Schweinsteiger was out for most of that and a shadow of himself when he came back and we had serious problems advancing the ball as a result. How much of that slump was due to a broken connection between him and the midfield?

lol if that's what you want to believe. :D We just spent 15m on a striker to pay him 7.5m because we didn't think he was a better option than Pizarro.

I thought he had asked for 6m.
Are you talking about Mandzukic? I think he is on a 3.5m per year contract

Exactly, on the spot. Might I also extend that to Shaqiri, who I thought was a decent player, but nothing of bayern's quality. I wish that Bayern made one other solid purchase besides Martinez, maybe someone like Dzeko who is fantastic. But Mandzukic is our solution to small teams in our way, he's an ok striker.

It may be too soon to say, but I think Gomez has improved his overall game while he was working back to fitness. He scored a great goal, which is to be expected, but he also was much more flexible and moved out to the wings on several occasions, even beating a defender 1v1 and putting in a good cross for Mueller.

The best scene of the match from Gomez however was a 1-2 with Ribery where Gomez lobbed the ball over the last defender into Ribery's path. He showed really good close control and passing vision in the box on that play. Something you just rarely ever saw from him in the past (normally he would dribble to the center and attempt a shot). Sadly the move was probably Bayern's best in the match, but it was not finished with a goal (Ribery hit the lobbed pass first time into the center where Mueller was unmarked, but his shot was straight at the keeper).

I'm talking about Pizarro. If he was so great with us, we wouldn't have sold him gave Klose a massive wage, on top of 15m euros spent... He left because they obviously thought Klose would be a much better option.

^ This! Even for the goal, Gomez did the dummy and immediately placed it into the net. Earlier he'd have taken a second or 2 more with that. My biggest complaint with him is his first touch; if he gets that right, he'll be the best no. 9 out there.

I think he already is the best traditional number 9 in the world, but he still has areas to improve. He's getting there, and I hope the increased competition in the squad will push him to his best.

I think he gets edged out by the smallest of margins by Falcao. But yes, he's improving, which can only mean for some good days ahead for us fans.

I haven't seen enough of Falcao to compare. We'll be better equipped to judge at the end of the season since Gomez has virtually missed the entire first half of the year.

I don't even think there's a comparison between Gomez and Falcao

Falcao and to a lesser extent Cavani both rival or surpass Gomez as pure strikers. but all three of these strikers need systems tailored to them to be effective.

Cavani rivals or surpasses Gomez? Well I won't start a discussion here but I strongly disagree and before we judge Falcao let him play some elimination rounds in the CL.

    Thanks.

Pop post, but Falcao is the kind of quality that will do well anywhere. I'm not making any conclusions but based on what I've seen he's extremely gifted.

I'll just drop the name of Diego Forlan. Incredibly gifted, incredible Uefa Cup and World Cup performances but never made it big in the Champions League.

I believe that Falcao has the quality to be a monster in the CL. too. He already had some good games in the group phase for Porto but nobody expected Forlan to fail at Manchester United but he did.

We'll see what he can do for Chelsea or wherever he ends up.

If Chelsea buy falcao without dropping Torres I will give up on football...

How can a team continue to not follow FFP?

They must be at their max aren't they?? You can't buy the whole world god damn it!
