Yes Javi is right with him. The problem is that he needs to be in front of him, not be with him. He's not going to go on a date with him. I agree Boateng should have stepped up, but Javi should have gotten in front of him to be a dominating DM not rely on other players to stop the player he himself is marking.

Boateng is a player that ball watched and does gaffs constantly, but most of the blame here is on the Spaniard.

Multiple players? Must be why he was replaced 53rd minute before the other subs then... He's been atrocious in both CL away matches so I have yet to see a good point on why Javi should start over Gustavo in away CL matches esp against an opposition that is stronger than both of the teams we play (other than he's played against them).

I think most of the blame for the BATE match is obviously on the coach starting 2 DMs and expecting it to work, but that's another story.

I agree he does give away possession a lot more than he should along with being an average passer. However I don't overrate him. Against quality opposition away (you know since he did play well against such opposition), I want Gustavo to start over him. I would say Javi is the better option for 80% of the season over Gustavo but switching between them is good since both defensive midfielders as they can be fresh.

It makes sense to start Javi against Nurnberg since all they will do is defend, and Gustavo or Tymo  have no place on the pitch since we need attack here. We have played this team many times, and no teams defends as much as these guys do against us. Home and away. Gustavo is more proven and can start against Valencia. Against BATE at home, Martinez can start.

Now Gustavo can make an own goal and troll me like an a-hole, but this is a pretty easy choice here and hopefully the coach does it.

    It was the second goal.

I know I'm late to the JM party but this is something I've been saying from day one about Martinez.

He seems to find himself constantly chasing the play. In that clip you can clearly see that he is once again out of position which ends up with him on the right side of the player and not in front as he should be.

Now the issue where i disagree with you both is where you say Boateng is ball watching.

Boateng is exactly where he should be doing what any defender in his position would do. He and Dante have successfully nullified the striker (2 v 1). He cannot predict the Kalou will take a wonder shot so he has to stick to his task of marking out the striker, so does Dante and Lahm to a certain extent.

Lets play a little IF Game shall we?

    Scenario 1
Lets just assume Boateng does step up and Kalou doesn't take his shot at goal. That leaves Dante in a 1 v 1 and with Dante to the outside of the player a simple through ball gives the striker a clear shot on goal just outside the 6 yd box. This still ends up being a goal or at best we get lucky.

    Scenario 2
Again Boateng steps up, but somehow Kalou can't make the pass to the striker just inside the box (a big if but still). Lahm will obviously spot the 1 v 1 with Dante and slide across to help him, but look what happens; there's a player crashing down the flanks in the spot just vacated by Lahm. There is no way Kalou doesnt make that pass so we are still in a precarious position. What happens from there is anyone's guess but chances are they still come away with a goal or a really good chance at getting one.

Martinez so far has be slow to read the plays defensively, offensively he does not seem able to make the space required to get the ball during buildup.

This is not a useless player bashing sentiment, because it believe he requires time to adjust to his new surroundings, but to say he is just as good as Gustavo now is doing Gustavo a massive disservice.

You know we over analyze every little play..

Goals have to come from somewhere in football don't they?

How about all our goals? Are they just great goals from team effort? Or can their fans also spend pages and pages analyzing why such and such player let our guys score in the first place...

I think we over analyze way too much around here :p

Someone has to score and someone has to concede at some point.

Kalou had a brilliant goal, nothing anyone can really do about it..

If it was Kroos that scored that, we would've had a whole thread dedicated to how wonderful it was..

We didn't win 6-5 or anything. We have been pretty solid in defense this season. I think we are doing ok.

I am only worried about the Valencia game in that I want us to secure 1st..

exactly, this is the reason why I talked about a draw, try this:
    NEUER
    LAHM-V.BUYTEN-DANTE-ALABA
    TYMO-PIGGY
    MÜLLER-KROOS-SHAQ
    MANDZUKIC
No chance to win this one-

That line-up is good enough to defeat practically every team in the bundesliga.

It's Nürnberg !!! They are struggling and a step away from the relegation zone ... I do think we can win by a comfortable margin dispite not having Robbery ... Valencia is another history ...

Again, give me a break ... It's not Pep's Barcelona we are going to face ...

I dont care that much about Nurnberg, I care absolutely about valencia. Any player thats risking an injury should be benched vs Nurnberg.

    Play vs Nurnberg.

    Neuer
    Raf-Buyten-Dante-Alaba
    Martinez-Schweini
    Shaq-Kroos-Muller-
    Pizza.

Unleash Bads, Ribs, Mandz, Lahm on Valencia.

The game vs Valecia is the key game

I wouldn't mind resting Lahm and also Martinez to save for Valencia...

Hopefully robbery will be fit by then.

Maybe Gomez can see some mins in this one.

I don't have the energy to continue this JM vs LG discussion.

I have my opinion and you have yours. It doesn't look like either is going to change so let's leave it for later.

    I totally agree with you

but disagree with that assessment. I think he's always been solid, not great, as long as he was part of a strong defensive unit with proper protection from defensive midfield. He was good last year before his injury, even rated the 3rd best CB of first half of the season by Kicker.

That doesn't mean I want to play him Valencia though, but I don't know if Heynckes would pair two left-footed CBs as it's clearly not the same as pairing two right-footed CBs because they are more used to it.

Resuming: we miss Boateng, Badstuber, Gustavo, Robben, Ribery, Gomez. Still sure a draw would be so bad?
