I'm one of the leon midgets biggest haters, but vasquez also had one hell of a game against them.....that pretty much by himself did all the recovery work in the midfield leaving gullit and montes to attack all game. I still think there's a level where they cant compete physically.
Some comparisons going on about world cup 98 vs. Mexico 2014. What do you guys think about the starter comparison? At first glance '98 looks stronger imo. 98 GK: Campos D: Suarez, Carmona, Joel Sanchez, Davino MF:Villa, Ramirez, Garcia Aspe, B. Luna F: Matador, Cuahtemoc 2014 (predicted) GK: Ochoa D:Aguilar, Reyes, Marquez, Moreno, Layun MF: Medina, Herrera, Gullit F: Oribe, Gio
The 2014 version has more talent. But the '98 version has what we have lacked the most in 2013/14....huevos.
Not sure If I agree on the talent. As much as I want us to have more talent now I just don't see it. Ramon Ramirez was in his prime, as was Garcia Aspe. Even our forwards, who are our current strength, aren't better. I'd take Matador and Blanco over our current forwards.
Negro And Montes are fine players the league. They can't compete at the international level. Rewatch the Nigeria game. Can't afford to have these two steamrolled by the Cameroonians.
Competent coaching is a bigger need than huevos. The problem in Mexico is the mentality that if we fail, it's because we lack huevos. The reality is that the coaches are tactically inept and select their buddies instead of the 11 best players (23 best players). Sure, there are times when guys seem timid with the NT. But to me that is because the coaches didn't know how to use them to their strengths. Hector Herrera comes to mind.
Huevos is the most overrated word in Mexican futbol. Talented players have confidence, huevos is secondary. A competent coach plus talented players is what you need.
For sure they need a better coach...but not much that they (the players) can do about that now. As for talent... on the day of the game you have it or you don't. I'm still shaking my head at the way they played the game @CRC. They were being eliminated form the WC and they had no fight in them. That was ********ing shameful.
The aura around the team was extremely negative and this is where I agree with pundits like de Anda and Juan Carlos where the media played a large role in raising the expectations of the fans and then piling on the pressure on the players and coaching staff. It was certainly a pathetic performance in Costa Rica but it wasn't surprising that the team crumbled.
So you think that Cuah and El Matador se hubieran achicado asi? Or El Emperador or Ramirez/Villa/Garcia Aspe. Well ... I think media or no media we all expect MEX to qualify for the WC. The expectation to finish 1st in the group was looooooong gone by then. Anyhow...don't want to derail the thread.
If Cuauh/Matador/Ramirez/etc. were constantly tinkered with and played out of position against their strengths, I think they would have eventually gotten frustrated enough to the point where they would no longer be effective. How it would have manifested itself is irrelevant.
Other than a few players they didn't had much "huevos" either I mean fawking Claudio Suarez was a total pussy specially for a cb don't remember check the Belgium goals.
By the dumb logic many mexicans use, that is exactly what they did 4 years later in South Korea (except for the guys who weren't there).
Modric said "..maybe he (Rafa) is not playing...in a competitive league...like he used to play but he is still an important player for Mexico..." He isn't putting down Liga MX. But he's basically saying Liga BBVA > Liga MX. Which is true.
