Well..... Tulsa County still hasn't decided what they want to do with this ballpark.
This happens to be the stadium where the 1985 Roughnecks played the year the NASL died.

Final decisions won't be made until late summer......
Rumor has it that a local racing promoter has the money to convert the field to a dirt track for midget car racing..... County's in the "due diligence" phase.....

Kinda surprised Skelly Stadium is still around after all this time. Do they still use it for soccer?

No. Just for college football and a handful of high school football games. The stadium was downsized a couple of years ago.... the field is still too narrow for soccer (think SJ's Spartan Stadium here), still needs about 5 extra yards on east/west sidelines.... and the 30k capacity is far too big for NASL or USL-1.....

What was the plan for a possible expansion or relocated MLS team in 2006? .... well, the stadium would have been modified as a temporary venue for MLS... if Tulsa had secured the ownership and a TIF district for a downtown soccer specific stadium.

    Before 2007........
....sections AA to HH removed.... and press box replaced.... north endzone had already been removed around 2003.....

    After....

And now, the proposed stadium for the NASL at the Tulsa fairgounds..... NASL could be first tenant, capacity is 10,997..... fingers crossed....

Game 1 - I remember listening to the game on KRMG radio... had a nice crowd that got raucous closer to the end, crowd stormed the field after the game... for Seattle fans-in-the-know, the coach that year was Alan Hinton with several of the players who became the nucleus for the Sounders best team ever in 1980.... including Roger Davies, David Nish, Jack Brand... halfway through the '79 season, Coach Hinton called into KRMG to dedicate the Beatle's "Nowhere Man" to general manager Noel Lemon....

    "He's a real nowhere man,
    Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
    Making all his nowhere plans
    for nobody."

Game 2 - The game was played on a Wednesday night, and still managed to draw over 76,000 at the Meadowlands.... hated missing the game on TV, since mom and dad forced me to go to church that night... wanted to play hooky.....

1984 Roughnecks changed uniform colors from red/black to piss yellow.... fall '83 the team got bailed out to the tune of around $60k by the fans.... a few weeks later, it looked like the team was going to be sold Green Bay Packers-style to the fans but ended up falling through for some reason....

TheHun, not sure of brawls in the outdoor games, but I remember an indoor game with the Sting at Chicago Stadium arena in which the Roughnecks had such a bad rep, the players tossed out roses to the crowd before the game..... good times. :D

Time to form a Tulsa soccer supporters group to let the Tulsa community and potential owners know that there is a soccer interest.

The Sons of Ben did well with this movement.

    Re: Roughnecks Supporters

    USRUFNEX and Tulsa Fans...
Please take a real good look at what we are doing with the new Southern Premier Soccer League and consider supporting it.

We are starting on Saturday with six teams for the winter season. There are going to be a number of new teams (Dallas, Ft Worth, OKC) added for the Apr-Jul season.

In October 2011, we will begin our first full natural season that will run to the end of June 2012.

Why a regional league? Why not? The boundries are great. Texas, OK, ARK, TN, NC, and everyone else south. We can also allow teams from bordering states on a case by case basis. Lets face it, a natural season league just is not going to work in Chicago or Canada, but is sure is going to be nice for us here in the south east.

Why USASA? We needed sanctioning on the fly. USASA provides that. But don't look at it as a negitive. Our league is allowing professional players. we have a path to the US Open, and will make moves up the USSF ladder. 40 games a year does that for a league.

You guys would do the game a great service by getting behind the team in your area. The Tulsa Lobos will be very entertaining, and you are in for a heck of a treat when you see our teams play.

Just a question, who owns the name rights to the ''Tulsa Roughnecks'' ? Didn't the NASL register them a few months ago ?

"natural season" what is a "natural season"?

Oh. You mean one that matches the Euro season? Like Ireland's? Or Sweden's?

I've heard it is the former coach of the A League Roughnecks, Ali Abidi. He is now the coach of the Tulsa Spirit of the WPSL, http://www.wpsl.info/spirit/. Heard wanted to put a higher level team in Tulsa in the last couple of years but I got the feeling it wasn't the right fit.

Sweden goes by a calendar similar to ours. Ireland, no clue.

As long as it fits in with the USOC path, I guess I don't care. But TX and OK aren't exactly immune to snow, I don't think. Not that I mind a little snow, myself, but many do.

I don't think the USASA is what the people on here are interested in. I have played against the Tulsa Lobos and would be surprised if they had much success in a professional league. They are, at best, marginally better than the top 3 adult league teams here in Tulsa. If you want people like me to go watch a professional team play, which I would love to do, it will need to be high quality soccer. Tulsa has a great soccer community but it's also a knowledgeable soccer community who won't go just to watch a team because it's there.

I think USL would be a high enough jump from our local amateur leagues that I would go watch most games. Anything less than that, not so much. I think I would go crazy if we get more redneck racing here in Tulsa. Seriously, how many NECKCAR fans can there be?

    Hey Gorilla

I sympathise with you. It would be great to have the Roughneck back. D-3 would be a nice start. It too bad that austin and St. Louis are gone - they would have been closest rivals.

it would be helpful if there were universities with good soccer programs nearby. But a good area with soccer academies might also be fruitful.

As for the Carneckers - let's hope the gas runs out ...

    cheers

During the nineties a second version of the Tulsa Roughnecks already played third division soccer

Let's hope a third version could be more successful

Only 2 levels from MLS? Try at least 3. And what does winning the Alabama US Cup do to help them get towards MLS? Sounds like someone is talking about promotion, which doesn't exist. My guess is its a bad translation, and it might be talking about winning the US Open Cup and moving up to play D3 and D2 and then MLS clubs.

The F.C. Tulsa soccer team, which is situated only two categories under Major League Soccer (MLS), will be playing the Alabama U.S. Cup this next month against the best third division soccer teams in the country.
25 teams will be competing in a playoff tournament to earn the cup and its winner will ascend to the second division, and we all know that from there till the MLS there is just a small-big step, just one more cup.

The FC Tulsa is part of the NPSL, which is div 4 soccer

But anyway, if the old baseball stadium will be converted into a soccer stadium, this can only be positive for soccer in Tulsa

I don't really count this level. With the exception of a few teams, these are just a summer development leagues designed around college eligibility rules. The amateur players aren't "under contract" and can't be transferred to USL Pro, NASL, MLS teams.
