We actually learned that defamation suits are incredibly easy to prosecute in England. In the US there's a number of requirements, like directed towards the forum and purposeful availment, in the UK all you need is that is printed in one publication, even if its by accident. So I reckon you'd actually have a pretty strong case haha
I think it is probably people trying to make a quick buck by extorting or black-mailing someone famous into settling out of court to avoid any negative press. One of the downsides of fame. There are numerous upsides though!
