Brazil 2014

It is hard for me to find people that commit to saving and going to a world cup. Who here plans to go to the Brazil 2014 WC

Are you serious? I love the enthusiasm but let's get through this WC first. For those headed to South Africa we haven't even had the chance to savor the countless hours of planning, researching, having friends drop out, wiring money to people you hope aren't going to rip you off, getting vaccinations, hoping the rental car company still has the automatic you reserved so you don't have to drive a stick on the other side of the road, making it a through Jo'burg without getting mugged...etc etc.

Hahaha good man. Im just know some people on here are not going to SA2010 and are already thinking of Brazil 2014

Im going for sure. If Uruguay goes, I will just follow them. If Uruguay doesn't, I will be following the US. Will probably buy one of the TST-7

I want to go.. I might go... I would say 3 years to decide for me.. long time. also depends where I am.

Let's just hope to God it is easier to plan than South Africa. Been like another bloody full-time job for the past 9 months.

Its a true statement. You try to plan a trip in advance on here and you are treated like an idiot. Some people on Big Soccer need to grow up, and if criticizing someone by typing on a forum makes them feel better about them selves they have problems.

By the way guys I am a financial advisor. I have a trip 50 days long by myself with 7 to 10 matches (including the final) organized for only $7000 to $9000. PM me if you want to know details. I am not trying to sell anything by the way just help you out

It was my 2010 New Years resolution to never miss another another World Cup the USA participates in. WHEN we qualify for 2014, count me in.

I will almost definately be there. My cousin married a Brazilian a few years back, and he officially invited me to go down and stay with them for the WC. so with free lodging in apparently a couple cities, Its just crazy to resist.

the only complication is that by 2014 my wife and i will likely be making babies, so that could of course complicate things.

one of my best friends is also going to head down and is in the 99% likely category. he is polish so if they qualify he will have split loyalties, but I can forgive him. as long as the US and Pols dont play each other

I guess you could always "try" to take your babies to the world cup... but its not easy.

From personal experience I've taken our daughter to games at all different ages...

If you get easy babies to take care of .... you'll enjoy 85 % of the action (provided of course you and your spouse share 50 - 50 of the work.)

If you get very demanding babies ... you'll enjoy 25 % of the action (provided of course you and your spouse share 50 - 50 of the work.)

Though as a parent and a soccer fan... its hard to not have them all there... that's family... and your love of the game. As a parent its great to share these things with your kids. Though costs, hassle, your energy level will force you to be resourceful.

Even though Brasil 2014 is still a while away, I just want to add, that I am looking forward to that World Cup. Mostly, because my birth city, Natal, was selected as a host city...Other than that, I will be there chilling in Joao Pessoa, a couple of miles from recife, my grandmother has a house there. So guys, when the time comes just let me know...cause all U.S supporters are like family.

of course. That world cup will be unforgettable...but for now am getting ready to go to the BRASIL and US games.

I was hoping to go to this one, so 2014 is definitely in my plans. I am planning to get one of those ticket plans where I can go to all of the U.S. games, no matter how far they get. (I just couldn't handle the idea of going to group games and then leaving as the team makes a dream run to the semifinals - and the U.S. games are the main reason I would be making the trip anyway)

This is good therapy for those of us who wanted desperately to go to South Africa, but were unable to.

How quickly can we book flights?

Does anyone with any experience heading to SAfrica have advice in keeping things cheap?

Rent an apartment or a house instead of staying in a hotel. $70 a night vs. over $200 a night.

How early did you do this? Is it too late to do it after the groups are announced?

Did anyone go on the American Outlaws thing? How was that for everyone?

To save money, you need to spend a lot of time planning, and start booking things a year in advance.

Buy a guide book. You will save at least the cost of the book in just the savings it will help you find on your first hotel/hostel night. It will also help you find the best value for money and lowest cost options for everything you do during your trip. Fortunately, Brazil is covered by Let's Go, which is by far the best budget travel guide series. South Africa wasn't.

Travel with at least one other person to split costs on hotel/hostel and car rental. However, you need to have your group locked in as early as possible. You may be booking flights, hotel/hostel, and game tickets a year in advance. Waiting to do those things will increase the cost of the trip, and dealing with people who aren't sure yet will be a huge headache. Even a full year before the WC, you'll find at least 80% of hotels/hostels are booked, which will include almost all the reasonably priced ones.

Check out the flight prices, both to Brazil and among the host cities a year in advance. Even though you won't know where the US is playing at that time, in June 2013, flights to Brazil for June 2014 could be 40-50% cheaper than if you wait until the draw. It may be worth it to buy a ticket early to either Rio or Sao Paulo (where you'll probably fly into anyway) and plan to buy plane tickets or rent a car to get to the US game sites later. Brazil will probably still be a country where you need to fly between host cities. You can drive from Rio to Sao Paulo, but that's a dangerous trip.

Check out hostels, not just hotels. Even with WC price hikes, hostels in SA had private double rooms for around $100 total per night, with discounts for long stays where hotels were almost always at least $200.

If the host city locations make it possible, base in one location for most of the trip. Especially when combined with booking early, that should get you a discount on your hotel/hostel.
