Its only for 7 games and then he'll try for a Euro club I'm sure- if he does extend it though I will move it across

"He's been fantastic. He's training hard, he's keen, he's a pleasure to work with and today he showed again that he's still got it.

"We're not looking at Mark for the season, we're looking at the five-game gap when Danny is suspended."

Bosnich is making his comeback after several years out of football since his Chelsea contract was ripped up in 2002 following a failed drugs test.

Sunday was his second appearance in a pre-season game for Central Coast.

McKinna believes Bosnich is enjoying the quieter life of Terrigal but suspects that Europe will come calling sooner rather than later.

With Vukovic one of the country's best developing keepers and goalkeeping coaches already in place, the Mariners mentor does not expect to be able to hold on to the former Aston Villa and Manchester United stopper in the long term.

"We're a very small club," McKinna said.

"If he keeps doing okay, there's no reason why he can't (get back to Europe). And maybe that's the platform Mark is looking for.

"When the transfer window opens up over there opportunities are going to arise.

"If he is playing and playing well here, well, the games are televised over there and people are going to see he's keen and has his head switched on."

Central Coast have confirmed that Socceroos icon Mark Bosnich will be welcomed to the Mariners' playing roster for seven rounds of the A-League season as the club's first guest player.

Bosnich is eligible for selection for the Mariners’ opening home match of the season against Sydney FC this coming Saturday and will then be considered for the Mariners’ subsequent fixtures from Round 3 through to Round 8.

During this time, Bosnich will potentially make as many as four appearances at Bluetongue Stadium and a further three across Australia and New Zealand.

"We are delighted to announce that one of the greats of Australian football is a Central Coast Mariner," said Mariners executive chairman Lyall Gorman.

"Since joining us as a triallist, Mark has proven to be an exceptional role model for not only the younger members of our playing group, but also our senior players and I have every confidence that by Mark continuing his stay with us in the capacity of a guest player, we have significantly boosted our aspirations on and off the pitch for the current season.

"We as a club have been simply amazed by the work ethic Mark has showcased since joining our playing group and cannot speak highly enough of the overwhelmingly positive effect his presence has had on our squad and our club.

It would have to rank as one of Australian soccer's most anticipated comebacks - although the man himself, Mark Bosnich, is doing his best to downplay his return.

Seven years after his last professional appearance, the former Socceroo goalkeeper will complete his climb back from the depths of drug abuse and depression when he straps on the gloves for Central Coast in their A-League match with Queensland Roar on Sunday.

It will likely be the first of a five-game stint for the 36-year-old at the Mariners, with regular `keeper Danny Vukovic to serve a five-match ban as part of his sentence for manhandling referee Matthew Breeze in last season's grand final.

Bosnich impressed in pre-season by saving a Steve Corica penalty and keeping a clean sheet in the Mariners' 3-0 win over Sydney FC last month.

Since then he has signed a seven-week short-term deal with the club in a bid to rejuvenate his career and add an uplifting epilogue to the most controversial of sporting stories.

But while many expect him to be the centre of attention at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday afternoon, Bosnich has refused to pump up his return any more than necessary.

"I'm humbling anticipating a game this week, and that's it," Bosnich said.

"I don't really know what to expect.

"I'm very much looking forward to the game, I'm ready. It's a big game for us, we need a win and I'm confident we can get one."

THE star has fallen but the lustre remains. Mark Bosnich is as big as he ever was. In some ways bigger, but not to dwell on that.

The journey for the man wanted by Liverpool and Manchester United at 16 has been long and difficult, but always entertaining. There have been dizzying heights and deep, dark lows.

In the 20 years since, there were saves which have defied gravity, stretch limousines, white suits and cigars. Then there has been scandal, toga parties and, of course, drugs.

For six years, Bozza disappeared from view - what he calls that "other" time. Friends and family couldn't find him. Some who did didn't like what they saw. Some who didn't wondered if he was dead. He wasn't, thank God, and while he's not a religious man, Bozza does thank God.

A year ago, there were fleeting sightings back in London, where he was making the first tentative steps towards resuming his career with Queens Park Rangers.

Four months ago, he stepped back into the light, coming home for the first time in eight years, to all the accompanying stares, and scrutiny.

THERE was no fairytale farewell but Mark Bosnich hoped it wasn't the end of his career when his short-term A-League contract with Central Coast ended yesterday.

Bosnich had trained desperately hard to overcome a hamstring injury so he could play in yesterday's clash with Wellington, the last match of his seven-game contract. But he could manage only a spot on the bench and sat there watching the fitter Danny Vukovic in between the sticks in the 1-0 loss.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea star was officially farewelled at a pre-match luncheon, although the Mariners hope to find a way to keep him involved with the club. An upbeat Bosnich was humble and grateful and declared he still hoped to keep alive his playing career.

Asked whether he would play on, Bosnich said: "That's not in my control, but the first thing is to say, I'd love to continue playing football.

WITH a full-time return to professional football emerging as his top priority after a successful stint with the Central Coast Mariners, goalkeeper Mark Bosnich has shelved plans to participate in a documentary tracking his road to recovery.

Bosnich was due to fly out to Los Angeles after completing his guest stint with the Mariners last month but ultimately decided it was not in his best career interests to take part in the documentary.

The 36-year-old, who made his name as a champion custodian after a decade-long stint in the top flight of English football with Aston Villa, Manchester United and Chelsea, admitted some timely advice from those closest to him helped sway him.

"I didn't end up going and doing it, and I decided against it as I didn't think it was right to go," Bosnich told the Herald. "No disrespect to anyone or to the people behind it, but it wasn't the right time. My family and quite a few friends voiced their concerns, so in the end I decided against it because there's no need to go into all that."

Now heavily focused on making a full comeback to football, Bosnich admits he can wait until his career has concluded before he contemplates whether or not to go down the tell-all path.

"Of course I want to play, it's something I really want to do. That's another reason why I didn't do the doco as well," he said. "I don't think, if I'm serious about playing, you can't be going off and doing documentaries like that. That's for a time maybe at the end of your career, or if ever at all."

Without a club and staying with relatives in Sydney's north, Bosnich sought permission from Sydney FC coach John Kosmina to join in at training with the aim of getting himself into peak fitness for the Oceania All Stars exhibition match against David Beckham's LA Galaxy in Auckland next month.

"'Kossie' is one of the people I've known longest in football, and I needed to train for the game against LA Galaxy, so I asked him could I come down and to help keep myself in shape," he said.

"After I rang him up he said no problems, and everyone from the kit man to the physio to the players has been great. That game is on December 6, so that's the immediate goal, and then we'll see what happens from there."

Bosnich said his fitness had not dropped away too badly since leaving the Mariners and offered plenty of credit to Sydney's new goalkeeping coach, John Filan.

"Overall, my fitness is good, really good. I'm just happy to be down here and really thankful to Kossie, 'Poppa' [Tony Popovic] and Johnny and the rest of the staff for letting me come down here to get working.

"One of the biggest factors for me wanting to be here is to work with John Filan, who is a superb coach. In fact, he's probably the best goalkeeping coach that I know and he's a local to me."
