A mess in the sense that in my view they always lacked "mentality".
A mess in the sense that you can't tell a real ultras from a mafioso.
Huge invasions when things go well and no groups when things are not going well.
    Too many knives.
Too many thieves ( particularly true of napoli ultras abroad when things are goin well ).
This is of course a "generalization" (?). There have been and there are some good groups. But none really is not affected from at least one of the above problems. Probably Cosenza's ( a hell of a group in the end of 80's-beginning of 90's ), Lecce's ( great love for the team, also if apart from regional derbies they're very quiet ) and Bari's are the one which are nearer to the best standard of northern province "mentality".

Interesting, but obviously biased list of preference.
Livorno are trying to became ultras again smething they have forgotten under the Bal leadership. Before the BAL they were a decent group. Palermo had a couple of good years in ages of nothing, Ternana were a good group but politic is destroying them. Fiorentina are going down since years... good support but apart from that they really are not anymore the though group they used to be.
Napoli, well, they're going well, by neapolitan standards ( which are good just for them, and apparently their rossoblu firends ).
Genoa, last saw them ( from very near ( very ) in the 2001, then in more nrmal circumstances in 2005 and 2007. Obviously a great group. But, as we say in Italy, "predicano bene e razzolano male" ( you know about that "Basta infami basta lame", thing.. ).
Doriani, good group but not on the same level: Ultras Tito are good.
Juve are pathetic? I don't know, but Viking are probably the toughest northern group, one whith which is better not to have problems ( it's quite notorious that under Viking are grouped a lot of little milan criminals ) . The normal tifoso are obviousy not what you'd expect from one of the most celebrated team in the world.
Verona are in a class of their own for their particular style. You hate or you love them. Despite their racist approach they still are one of the few original groups left in Italy.

quand'รจ che i tifosi genoani avrebbero fatto uso di lame?? Per il resto, non parlavo solo di gruppi ultras ma di tifo in generale....

and yes, verona and juve really are pathetic.

I think mattteo just put anybody who doesn't worship Togliatti and his kind in the "pathetic" category.

The ultras of Juventus are pathetic but Ternana are in the top 10?? That is dillusional to say the least. Obviously there are reasons to hate Milan for a Genoa fan, but they produce some of the best displays in Italy as shown in this thread. Also Livorno are good but Lazio are pathetic?? How does that work?

For starters, CL ,matches are very expensive especially for stadio Olimpico...give me a break! Secondly, I'd like to see you spend 80-100 Euro for a ticket when you are only making 1000 Euro a month!

I lived there and I know what its like. 80,000 a match are very few and far between especially in this economy! Are you kidding me? Who averages 80k fans ever? ....... If in fact you do live in Italy, then you should know how difficult it is for fans to buy a ticket.......I really think its time to come back to reality!

show me one F*CKING game where the curva is not 100% full...

yea the stadium wasnt full for the CL:rolleyes:

italian stadium differ from german, spanish, and english... COMPLETELY different ways of being "fans"

Germany is always full and has good ultras

England can stick their hool sh*t up their ass and sit all game...

Spain is kinda like italy but averages more...

italy is basically 20% fans 80% ultras (come on, look at the smaller teams' stadiums) of course when the big teams come or when the team does good then everything is a-ok...

and to keep on topic, sampdorias flags are sick when they fill up both the upper and lower levels of their end...

i'll respect lazio for that painting/drawing of the kid that was shot... classy

when prandelli's wife died, the striscone that was held by viola fans was cool

inter, juve, and milan fans are clueless btw... but, i'll say milan>juve>inter.
delle alpi screwed the juve fans in torino, but as it has been said, their following in the south is massive (same with Napoli... where i'm from, ppl cheer for napoli mostly... b/c salernitana never plays them... BUT WE'RE BACK IN B!!! Those derby games were great...)

No excuse, Milan and Inter fill them up or near full capacity when it matters. Roma doesn't.

YEAH I WONDER WHY? THEY'VE ALWAYS WON A LOT MORE TOO AS OPPOSED TO ROMA EVER HAS AND THEY'VE ALSO SPENT MUCH MUCH MORE. YOUR REASONING MAKES NO SENSE. A CLUB LIKE ROMA HAS ALWAYS CONSISTENTLY BEEN AMONG THE LEAGUE LEADERS IN ATTENDANCE ON A YEARLY BASIS.

FOR A CLUB THAT HAS ONLY WON COPPA ITALIA'S AND 3 SCUDETTI, THEY STILL CONSTANTLY DRAW WELL....AND THIS IS QUITE AN ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR A TEAM THAT HASN'T WON MUCH.

But to say they are the best, as the thread asks, is not accurate nor even close. I would Roma's are the WORST, considering they bring shame to the whole league every time a foreign visitor gets stabbed in the ass, or killed.

Only the ignorant Roma fans that stab other fans in the ass and ruin Italy's chances of hosting a major tournament since 1990. ROMA INFAME

unless you say Juve, Inter, Chievo, Empoli, Milan, etc are the best...then yer crazy.

Juve, Inter, Milan have some great Ultras but they can't really compare to many other clubs.

The biggest and best support is most likely Napoli but that's one of the beautiful things about Italy! You can make an argument for over 100 teams...Some in Serie A, some in Serie D...

The Ultras mentality allows so many teams to have an incredible atmosphere no matter where they are playing in.

    Liberta per gli Ultras....

PS@ soccerfreak spain is by no means like Italy.
it WAS more like Italy but the league itself is more like England with disgusting fan oppression and all-seater stadiums which has really killed the once great atmosphere there.

No country in europe can compare with Italy in terms of the passion for all teams.
