I agree Cantonas is absolute quality, I think that the best striker in Prem. history would probably have to be him or Alan Shearer

You're talking my language there StevieG. He is an absolute legend. No single player in Prem history has consistently scored the quality of goals that this man did and also, considering what you lose for going out of the division, generated the sort of money for 1 club. It aint a secret that for 4 or 5 years he kept us up on his own. So you could say that he made Southampton FC between £75-£100million. Not bad for a tubby little Channel Islander with little ambition.
    Shearer close second though

Hey Mel! Here's a nudder vote for Big Al.

Close this thread, boys. The final tally's taken. It's Shearer.

Stop pottering about with your Henrys and your Le Tissiers.

    Peace out.

I was shocked to see no one had said him these people must just not be able to truly appreciate how good he was. If he played on a bigger club like Arsenal or Man U he would be the easy choice for best ever.

Erm I’m going to have to disagree with the majority opinion. I always believe that if your star burns brightest it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t burn for as long. Eric Cantona is the best striker that the Premiership has seen; perhaps his record doesn’t back him up but what does are his trophies, impact and most of all ability. All round ability I might add. Credit to Shearer, I admire him greatly but Cantona is the kind of player I watch football for; I think he’s provided greater memories that Shearer couldn’t even conceive of.

Maybe it’s the English bias, for an Englishmen who abandoned his national team.
Is he afraid of the big time? Of not living upto expectations? At Newcastle he’s a hero – somewhere bigger, he might not be. Shearer has won one trophy and that’s it but Cantona won the title every year he played in England from 92-97 (apart from 95, where he was suspended for most of the season, when Shearer’s Blackburn won).

Shearer has the vote because of his goalscoring record, but is thats it? Case closed because he scored more goals?? By that lazy logic Andy Cole is clearly the second best then; ahead not only of Cantona but also Henry, Owen, Klinsmann, Van Nistelrooy, Le Tissier etc. That argument just doesn’t wash.

Goals win matches. you can step over and side step till the cows come home but if the other team scores more goals then it doesn't matter. Shearer does what all great strikers should do. Score goal. Cole was an amazing player 36 in his first prem season, beat that andy johnson. Other players may have more skill or pace but is cantona or klinsman still scoring 19 goals a season in a very very average team at 34? NO

Memories you want memories? try a 30 yard screamer in the last minute against everton? a 17 minute hatrick against leicester to win 3-2 from 2-0 down.

he left the international squad because he felt he could extend his career by not playing in internationals during the season and compititons during the summer. 30 goals for england that is not abandoning? he left england to play for the club he loves.

man u fans still boo him 10 years after he rejected a move to them 10 years? afraid of the big time? no

Think before you speak next time you fool

Yeah. Shearer is quality. It's the number of years that he's been so good which is truly remarkable. Even did well playing for Soton.
