I seriously think Rooney might be up there. However much I love Drogba, and however much I admire Torres, I have to admit that Rooney is far and away ManUre's best player and a great forward. W/o him, ManUtd would be down near 7th or 8th, I believe.

I cannot wait to see what LD does at Everton. He just might shock some people.

Not at all, name a great English/Irish player? I predict the U.S is going to beat England 3 nil in the world cup.

The U.S is far better than Scotland,Whales, Ireland.....

The prem is only good because of players like Drogba,Torres etc...all non British,Irish players.

The US may be better than Whales, they're probably better than dolphins as well. But, as much as I have faith in our boys, they are not better than England. I think 3-0 is a bit of a stretch. I'd settle for a draw.

And, judging by your first question there, I don't think you've ever watched any English football......

Folks often believe Torres is injury prone but the same should be said of Drogba. Torres has played 11 more Prem games than Drogba in the last 2 and a half seasons. That figure increases if you go further back.

Incidentally, Rooney has played a whopping 4 more Prem matches than Torres in that time frame and Anelka 5 more than Torres.

As you say, he has had some problems fitness wise this and last season but his frailty is over-emphasized imo. Torres has missed games, true, but he is hardly RVP.

Drogba is another injury hit striker and I have regularly commented on the pair of them missing games particularly in the latest polls PerĂº FC created.

FWIW if you extend it to the last three seasons in all club competitions:

    Rooney - 116
    Torres - 104
    Drogba - 98
    Van Persie - 78

We have all had issues with our key attacking players.

Those stats are misleading. Torres seems to play a large chunk of matches half fit, where he can do nothing but let the game pass him by.

Torres has scored his first 50 Prem goals (not counting penalties) in fewer games than anyone in the Prem era apart from Andy Cole.

As you say, Torres has had to play games where he is not fit enough to last the entire game - and yet his goal-rate is higher than anyone else's in the Prem. These two facts together merely highlight how impressive Torres has been such that despite playing 90 mins less than some other players Torres scores more frequently. If Torres had had less injuries than his strike rate would likely have gone up as he would have had to spend less time regaining match-fitness.

It is the byproduct of Torres being the only good striker Liverpool has available and often the only goal scoring threat outside of Torres. Strikers who are not fully fit often contribute little overall to games but if you give them a chance most will still be able to take it.

    Wayne Rooney.

    Then Drogba and Torres.

Rooney's 100 goals in 247 prem games is impressive but Torres strike right of 50 in 72 is on another level.

Torres is far and away the better stiker and its not really fair on Rooney and others to be compared to him. Maybe if the topic was the best forward there could be some debate, but strikers are all about scoring and Torres is simply in a league of his own.

Well that's your first mistake in an argument regarding Rooney...

I will say though that Torres does obviously have a lot more to his game than scoring, but while I don't consider him the better player nor forward than Rooney (though it is close), I will consider him the better striker.

I said the exact same thing in the 'van Nistelrooy vs. Henry' stuff from 02-04, so I might as well try to be consistent. ;)

Torres is probably more lethal than Rooney, but I think by now it is quite clear that Rooney is the better player.. Rooney's all round game is far better, his movement, passing, stamina e.t.c are just brilliant

For clarity's sake, this was my argument. If you're talking all about strike rate, then the posters who disagreed with me of course are quite correct: nobody can currently match Torres.

I created this thread to discuss the Best Striker in the Premiership. It is not about who is the Best Player in the Premiership. If you wish to discuss this then feel free to start another thread.

The arguments not about Rooney though its about the best striker in the prem(obviously Torres:p).

Both Daglish and Beardsley were better players than Ian Rush, but Rush was far and away the better striker. Similarily Hughes and Cantona were both better players then Cole but again Cole is the better striker.

The only 2 football positions that stats can actually win a footall debate in is goalkeeper and striker. Every other position is open to debate and opinion.
