Choking applies to great players, English players dont fall into that category ;)

I'd say Higuain was the best Argentinian at the world cup.

Messi did nothing wrong with the ball, that is clear, but also not much good things.

Ronaldinho 2006 comes to mind. Although he was hindered by an attack composed by an out of place (support striker)/out of form Adriano and an overweight/immobile Ronaldo.

He was played in a position not natural to him deep into the midfield and farther from the goal than usual.

Messi 10 was much better than Ronaldinho 06.

Is there any ONE player that could have changed the outcome of that Argentina vs Germany game? If Maradona or Pele was on the field in place of Messi would Argentina have won?.....really? I really don't think so

With Maradona (or Pele) in that team, thegame would be so much different
I would not say Argies will definitely win it but they will have a very good chance to beat such a "quick counter" Germany team or at least hold a tie like 1-1 or 2-2.

Why? Look at thei stats: Maradona 5goals+5ass/7 games WC86 and Pele 4goals+6ass/7games WC70 = nearly 1.5points per game = in that game they could have scored 1goal and/or made 2 assists

James, I really like your posts but this is too simple. You never know beforehand how chemistry works and whether such a person fits into the game. Pelé was after all shut down in 1966 and it is no coincidence that a player out-shined him who could outmatch his physicality (Eusébio). And we also know what happened with Maradona in his physical prime at 1982WC.
The safe thought experiment is how an all-round player as Di Stefano would fare. I think he would have been under any condition an addition with his leadership skills and will to win.

Or a football version of Michael Jordan. Jordan was basically a healthy version of Di Stefano with muscles.

Argentina was completely intimidated by the Germans in that match. One player would not change 10 others mindset

LOL are you joking me? Using stats that Pele achieved with the greatest team of all time, and then using Maradonas stats against a different opponent...with a different argentina team. Your post makes absolutely no sense sorry

Did I ever say that Pele playing on the greatest team of all time = him not being the best player on the planet?

The best player on the world is the best no matter where he plays. Messi is still the best player in the world when he plays for Argentina. Schwuppe has argued this before, the players greatness is consistent, its the silverware in the cabinet that changes with good teams. Hence why Pele nor Maradona in all likeliness would have changed the outcome of the game vs Germany if they were in Messis shoes.

    on a scale of 1 to 10.

when messi plays for barca, i give him an 8.7

when he plays for argentina i give him a 6.4, except for a few descent games, he never really makes a difference.

That was a very nicely worked goal indeed :).

It's not impossible for English players to score comparable goals though ;):

1:02 Greaves goal (some other very good goals in this game especially Bobby Charlton's but I was thinking of ones, like Greaves goal at 1:02, that displayed similar qualities to Magico vs Barcelona)

Higuain scored 3 goals against South Korea, 2 of them were created by Messi. His other goal was a gift by Mexico. Messi was better than Higuain. You continue showing your colors.

When Magico plays for El Salvador 10, when he plays against Barca and Madrid 10, because of course no other player in history has scored against them. Fernando Torres must be top 10 in your list.

I don't think he played up to his full potential, but I do think Messi was the best player for Argentina in the last world cup, considering all the matches. If it would have been a different player other than Messi people would be talking about how well he played. But from Messi we expect more, because of how he plays for Barcelona.

As far as Argentine players choking at the world cup, the first one that comes to mind is Amadeo Carrizo. Based on his whole career I consider him to be the best South American goalkeeper of all time, but in Sweden 58 towards the end of his career he allowed ten goals in 3 matches.

Please stop with your personal insults.

Messi only created one goal by himself by the way. The free kick, the other went on the post and wasn't entirely created by himself.

    Goal.com player ratings.

    Nigeria:

    Messi: 8
    Higuain: 8

    South Korea:
    Messi: 8.5
    Higuain: 8.5

    Greece:
    Higuain didn't play

    Mexico:
    Messi: 7.5
    Higuain: 7

Both outclassed, according to goal.com, by Tevez who had an 8

    Germany:
    Messi: 7
    Higuain: 4
    explanation:

So thanks to that last game, he wins.

It isn't that strange what I was saying anyway. You may disagree, but it isn't totally off the mark.

I wouldn't say they were intimidated, but it was more of a tactical failure. They got behind early and instead of showing patience they went suicidal, and Germany took advantage.

    Stop being a baby.

Goal ratings? Watch the actual games.

Messi only had one direct assist but he was directly involved in plenty of goals. For example against Greece he hit the ball, it rebounded off the keeper and fell to Palermo who scored. That isn't credited to Messi on the stat sheets but it was basically his creation.

    So? Messi did play.

Another example of your bias and silly way of "making" an argument. You have ruined this forum. Congrats.
