I used to get some really good ones from Jones' Dairy on 4800 South East of Redwood Road. But since they closed I haven't found any with the perfect "squeak."
I didn't know about Jones Dairy. I think I've only ever bought squeaky cheese from the dairies in Delta, UT and Star Valley, Idaho. Somebody told me they thought the Star Valley cheese factory closed down. Is that just a rumor, or is it really gone?
Ah yes, squeaky cheese. Personally I don't think there is such a thing as GOOD cheese curd, I find it quite nasty. My wife swears by star valley, but oddly enough every time she buys some, I find it months later in the back of the fridge, a bit moldy. Does anyone actually eat the stuff.
I rarely make it up to Star Valley so I don't know if the factory has closed or not. The BYU Creamery or the dairy store at Utah State do ok but I only go there when I am visiting one of my children. I would like to find som ein the valley.
Well, I just had to google it to get the answer. The Star Valley Cheese Company opened back up for business earlier this year. I look forward to a swiss cheseburger next time I drive up that way.
Gossner's on 10th West in Logan is the major producer of cheese curds for sale at the factory and in regional supermarkets.
I don't know if they make the squeaky cheese that is sold at Ream's, but it is a decent cheese curd. I personally am partial to the cheese curds sold at the dairy in Beaver, UT. They make a pepper-jack cheese curd that is amazing. The Tillamook factory in Oregon makes some amazing squeaky cheese as well.
IMO, the key is to eat the stuff fresh. Best when the curd comes right off the line - still a little warm. Once it gets more than a day old, it starts getting nasty. Can't stand the stuff from grocery stores that has been sitting around for at least a week.
