One of the things that's unique about what the Union and PPL Park bring to the Philly pro sports landscape is a selection of fine beverages that is of a much wider variety than it's "competitors" (*cough* The Linc *cough*). The problem is knowing what in the world is being poured and where around PPL Park. Enter the Beer Guide to PPL Park thread. I walked around the concourse before the Chicago match, so all beers listed are correct as of 5/18/13. I listed them by section, however if I have time I may tally these differently (comments appreciated!). There are other concessions that generically list "Bottled Beer" on the menu but none were visible for documentation. If anyone notices something new or different, let us know so we can keep this current. Nice post. The Dogfishhead behind 130 has always been 90 Minute IPA in the past. On Saturday, I stuck with the Victory Hop Devil. Next match I am going to have to try the Goose Island. For me, PPL Park is all about the beer, the pitch, the players warming up, all followed by a soccer match. I want us to win, but that is really just icing on the cake. Two Hop Devils and a professinal soccer match. What could be better?
I believe the only non SABMiller or Anheuser-Busch-InBev beers are Sierra and Victory. DogFish too, but I can't say I've ever actually seen that there. You would think at least Yuengling would be served. I don't know the reason why more local craft is not served there. I would support it easily over most of the above brands.
I did. I always try to drink the opponent's beer if possible. Usually we win, so why stop doing something that works?
Ah, I see, it's like a pillage the city mentality kind of thing: we'll conquer your army, drink your beer, and take your women?
While technically it's still Chicago based, it's wholly owned by AB-InBev at this point and at the beginning of this year most of the original leadership was gutted and replaced with AB personnel. I have a hard time still thinking of it as a "local Chicago" brewery.
This is a sweet thread, it should be expanded upon by listing prices and amount of beer (ounces) because snake and shield gives you 22 oz beers (i believe its 22 at least) but is approximately 2 beers which is great for a soccer game since there is really only 1 break. Domestic beers are $11, while "premium" are $13. I always go this route if i'm getting a beer in the stadium
$0.50/oz for domestic. Please don't remind me. I never understood why The Union went Eagles/Phillies pricing on concessions (Phillies are actually $0.37/oz for their large domestic option. $7.75 for 21oz). For a non-established team, cheaper concessions could be a nice draw to increase the fan base.
It must have been after last season with the Heineken? I still miss the Bass that used to be on the 127 side in 2011...
I'm impressed that the beer selection at PPL is so extensive that a guide is required to navigate it. Cheers!
I missed this thread entirely, but since I've re-upped tix this year, very glad I found it. Since we are 9 days away, thought I'd take the awesome OP, cut /paste into a google doc so it's easier to update/maintain. It's open to anyone to edit, I added columns for Price / Size, though maybe need an extra row if there's a souvenir cup size, etc. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AsqcroTqBcDIdEUwdmZpLV9qM0pqb2hZN2pYY05sMmc#gid=0
Anyone notice that there are more stands then not for beer, especially on the river side? Makes it harder to use your Union Dollars for beer!!! They really should have made it usable at all locations since basically half the stadium is relegated to buying beer from stands plus the kiosk of Union gear as well.
I tried a couple of GI beers the other day, Sophie and Matilda. Not exactly my cup of tea, but well-constructed and I would drink the Sophie before a lot of other stuff.
i agree with that. i usually get one there pre match, and then have a miller's lite from the wandering beer minstrel to round out the half. after the whistle, i take a wazzer, and its back to the "snizzle n shizzle" as i like to call it, for my second half-er. depending on the match, i may have one more ML from said minstrel. Then its Union win, back to the whip for the postgame tailgate. /fin
