Bayern Threaten To Negotiate Own TV Deal

    AFP
    January 23, 2006

MUNICH, Germany (AFP) - German champions Bayern Munich have threatened to negotiate their own financial package if the German Football League (DFL) do not increase their cut from television revenue.

A lucrative new television deal means the German Football League (DFL) will have 420 million euros to distribute to the 36 professional teams in the top two divisions and Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is demanding a bigger cut.

"If we went elsewhere then they would roll out the red carpet and we would leave with a cheque for between 75 and 100 million euros," Rummenigge told the Suddeutsche Zeitung.

"We lose out on about 75 million euros by this system and there is no other country in Europe where this happens."

In the past the DFL has distributed television revenue evenly amongst the 36 teams with bonus payments depending on the team's league placing at the end of the season.

Last season the 19-time German champions Bayern received 16 million euros from television revenue but the current Bundesliga leaders do not appear willing to settle for a similar amount this time around.

    +++++++++++++++++++++

Guys, you won't like my opinion. But this isn't the first time Bayern has issued this threat and honestly, I'm sick and f#cking tired of it. If they didn't like the revenue sharing deal, they didn't have to f#cking sign it. They've cheated against it enough times anyhow!

My message to them: Quit your endless b!tching and leave. If you can get that 75 million Euro check elsewhere, shut the f#ck up and go!

The Bundesliga will survive without you.

Juventus torino for instance. They receive ca. € 120 Million per year with it (Bayern gets ca. 16-25 Millions every year with their current contract).

ditto to footyfan's comments, i'm so sick and fvcking tired of this arrogant way in which the Bayern management has to behave. No one's forcing them to stay, they accept the deals that are acceptable for every professional team or they go away. 1860 are sympathetic anyway...

    sorry for the trolling :)

If this is the Sky deal you are talking about, I think your "per year" number is a bit high.

Under the Sky contract, which should expire after next season, Juventus makes 184.5M over two years. Plus a 5M bonus for finishing first or second each season.

So, that's 90M for this season, plus another five if they finish first or second and 94.5M for next season and another five if they finish first or second.

Now, what makes your response to DF factually incorrect is that Juventus aren't the only ones who have this type of deal with Sky.

Both Milan clubs have the same deal.

However, they are the only three. Sure, some of the other bigger clubs get more than some of the other smaller clubs, but what's fair about that??

What Bayern are complaining about is that the Bundesliga, instead of subsidizing the big clubs, such as Bayern, Dortmund, Schalke, etc., split their TV revenue fairly and evenly, granting bonuses to the teams who finish at the top. I think Bayern is basically complaining that those bonuses just aren't enough for them. Tough s#it.

Why Bayern needs to stop f#cking whining and acknowlege is the fact that the Bundesliga doesn't have a TV contract comparable to that of Italy's with Sky! (Sky Italia)

If Bayern wants to cash in on TV contracts like that, maybe they should stop threatening, leave, and join Serie A.

Problem with that is, Serie A won't accept them and UEFA won't let it happen because that would be the first step toward a European "SuperLiga". Something UEFA has repeatedly said will not happen.

Bayern wants the Bundesliga to subsidize it's own freakin' demise. If they hand Bayern that money, the Bundesliga will become Scotland. Only without two teams "ruling", just one.

Not that the the Bundesliga isn't nearly that way already.........

I see what KHR is crying about. The Italian, English and Spanish clubs have more money to spend than they do and that puts Bayern behind the power curve in Europe.

I see that. However, that's just too freakin' bad.

If the Bundesliga had a contract like that, I wouldn't even mind seeing Bayern and the other clubs competing in Europe get floated that kind money to compete.

Then again, Bayern might be thinking they can make some money out of Premiere by selling their match rights to them. However, they are bound by the league TV contract. Ironic. When Premiere had the league contract, Bayern were caught extorting extra money out of Premiere by making the same freakin' threats.

The bottom line is, the Bundesliga cannot provide Bayern with that kind of bonus money without destroying some of the smaller clubs.

Bayern knows that. They just don't give a rat's a$$! Bayern. Who claims they care more about German football than any other club.

    BULLS#IT!!!

And some of you guys wonder why I can't stand them..........

Filter off the FOUR-letter comments above and I agree with the concept of Club over Players; League over Club; and Nation over League.

The Bundesliga is bigger despite I am a devoted Bayern fan. I don't want to see a non-competitive Bundesliga where the end-of-season champions is already predictable as soon as the league starts. No fun at all. And it is fatal to the goodness of Germany football. Bayern needs to realsie this.

The only way out for Bayern to match the revenue of other continental big clubs is to exploit the opportunities in overseas (non-EU) markets which are dominated by the English; Spanish; Italian leagues. Bayern have to do it fast otherwise the French are catching up. I have said this in other threads. So they need to keep better known players, such as Kahn, Ballack, Lucio, Sagnol, Scholl, Ze Roberto, Makaay, Deisler ...

Their coalition with Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds is a good start. They could even think about operating soccer schools - that's what MU, Chelski in Asia and Beckham in Asia and USA are doing now. Bayern needs to sow the seeds now. Need to start building up the CORE of fan clubs in every corners of the earth. Similar approach should be undertaken by other Bundesliga teams. Hamburg, Schalke, BVB, Leverkusen, Stuttgart, Hertha, Glabach ... all these were once premiere brand names but were gradually neglected in other parts of the world because the teams/Bundesliga were not enthused in exploring the market so their popularity declined and helped make ways for the rise of other European leagues. It's a real pity.

These are definitely the types of moments that I wise Bayern were run differently. I love the history of the club with its players and performances... why all this bullshite to mucky up all that is good? This and the moments when KHR and Uli piss and moan about how other teams are contacting their own players (ie. Ballack, Sagnol). It the business world boys... get a clue!

That being said, I do agree that this is insanity from a standpoint of what Bayern demands are. Unfortunately, as Bayerntone so beautifully stated, Bayern seem to be the only team in Germany with the ability financially to try and even consider starting to match the "muscle" of the other top clubs in Europe. But we ALL know they still don't have that yet. Hell, if they did, there would be NO discussion concerning Ballack's departure!

So Bayern are simply trying to keep their head above water in this "world domination" scheme that Barca-Real-Chelski-ManU-AC-Juve etc etc are involved with year in, year out. I guess the bigger question is: Are Bayern even close to reaching that plateau or should they just bit the big one relinquish their dream of being an "elite" club?

If it were up to the players that just signed on for the next 4 seasons (Lucio-Hargreaves-Sagnol-Demichelis-Deisler-Schweinsteiger-etc-etc), I dare say they would fit for the opportunity to join those ranks. And I hope they do... as I stated in the Lehmann thread... WITH THEIR PLAY. All this other b.s. - I leave that up to the joker and his fiddler.

They can't stand it when they get a taste of their own medicine......

I disagree. Ballack isn't leaving over money. Ballack is leaving because of the way he was treated when he first got there and he knows that there's a football world out there even bigger than Bayern Muenchen that he deserves to be a part of.

Were it about money and convenience, I have no doubt he'd remain in Muenchen.........

Bayern has one thing the others you mentioned don't have. They have actual football savvy. However, it seems they are beginning to believe that's not enough. But they do need to face facts and realize they'll never make the money the other big foreign clubs do in the Bundesliga.

Why? Because the German fan won't finance it. For Bayern to get what they want, ticket prices would have to become similar to those in England and the pay TV rates would have to go through the roof. That's not going to happen. German fans would rather rebel than pay.

As much pride as Bayern brings to the German fan, you can bet the German fan would never meet those type of financial demands.

Exactly. That's the way to do it.

FootyFan1... you're alright by me, man... great response. It is always insightful, and I can't say I disagree. Concerning Ballack, I agree -- I think the seed was planted long ago when he took hell for not being a leader, when quiet frankly he was ready to be. Now that he is, it is time to exact his revenge. I wish him well -- I think he will be a great embassador of German football abroad.

I know we play in four days... it just seems like forever!!! :D
Hell, I agonized for a month as to whether or not I would get tix to WC06, so I figure I can just about handle anything, but I am starving for some competitive matches.

I think they expected him to walk right in and be another Stefan Effenberg and that's just not who Michael Ballack is. Ballack speaks through his play, not his mouth. I also think the pressure got to him that first season, not to mention the nagging injuries. However, it's the fault of Bayern management that they treated him so badly and unfairly.

Yeah, I know you knew. That's what the "LOL" was for. Was just kidding around with you. Hell, you'll probably see the match and I won't unless someone makes it available on torrent after it's over. I'm catching more and more matches that way.

Good luck with it all! Not long to wait for the matches though! LOL!! ;)

well its more a case of six of this and half a dozen of the other as i see it. I dont really blame Bayern for it.

I think this has all to do with competitiveness.

As far as the Bundesliga goes, i know its not very competitive but even then it is more competitive than the EPL...and the important thing is that i think evenly distribtued TV revenue has a lot to do with it. It ensures more competitiveness for the clubs and plus the incentive based payment works as positive reinforcement for the clubs to do well.

I agree that if Bayern were the get the lions share of payments than they would be head and shoulders ahead of the rest (not that they arent now ;)!! ) and that would be unfair for the fans in Germany who pay to watch the football...because lets face it...non-competitive games...thats no fun!

On the other hand looking at it from a Bayern perspective, they dont want to fall too far behind in the European football heirarchy. With the amount of money that Juve and Chelsea and Milan and Barca are pouring into transfers there remains a distinct possibility that within the next few years they may be nothing more than tail lights for Bayern to chase. Bayern definitely dont want that to happen now do they?

So its a double edged sword for Bayern. But even than its heartening to see that Bayern who receive so little in revenue payments compared to Juve can still give them a run for their money any day of the week...in Turin and in Munich. That goes to show the football acumen that the men running the club have.

All fine and well, for us to be saying that the league must remain competitive, but in all honesty who here can say that bayern winning the championship every year is not almost a guarantee; and thats with equal distribution. Now i pose the question. what happens when Bayern ceases to be a factor in Europe and more Russians take over smaller clubs and pump millons into them, what song will we bayern fans be singing then? Maybe it goes something like this : Damn those Russians.........
Look most of us here cannot even seen proper league games so you know what i agree with KHR we need a bigger slice of the pot. It just isnt fair for clubs in the 2nd division to be getting the same as the GREAT BAYERN.

Great post! We agree on the acumen/savvy Bayern has and that's what will keep them competitive. Bayern will always get the best German players and the players who don't get the huge paydays from the others.

Dude, I'm fully capable of realistic conversation on FC Bayern and they do have the best management team in Germany and possibly in Europe. I've said that often enough on these boards and you will even see me say it on our list if the subject comes up.

Juventus: 120 Mio from next season on
Milan: a little less than Juve
Inter: a little less than AC

Real: somewhere in the region of 100 Mio Euro
    Barca: a little less

Does this have anything to do with no Bayern matches shown on Fox Soccer Channel this season in the US? Bayern used to be shown every other week. Have to download the matches thru bittorrent to watch them which I'm none to happy about.

No. That's all television contracts here in the USA. Setanta USA and ProSiebenSat1 own first choice of just a few (three or four?) Bundesliga matches they are allowed to show each Saturday.

Every now and then, Setanta and ProSiebenSat1 choose the same match which is when you usually see a match with one of the big "names" involved on FSC.

Either way, FSC are left with slim pickings for their telecast.

its disappointed me enough to persuade me to return my cable box yesterday... ive had it with the coverage... i checked for this weekends fixtures, and theyve delayed the broadcast of the match by 2.5 hours this weekend in order to accomodate an FA cup match (something theyd never telecast before)...

coupled with the shyte serie a matches (smart move to choose 3 shyte teams, FSC... that way if inter, ac or juve travel to one or two of these crap teams on a particular weekend, you still have a third fvkk-all team to ensure that we get an absolutely dull, meaningless game devoid of any quality all through the season! )

ive been paying ott for the extended digital cable and finally returned it yesterday after seeing the upcoming weekends listings... im gonna rely on the streaming programs to watch matches from now on and use the $50+/month that im gonna save, on something more satisfying... like a few extra pints at the bierhall so that i can rant longer and harder about monopoly and shyte football coverage by the local cable and internet company!:(

Yeah, stateside coverage of anything Bundesliga related is pathetic. Thank God for bit-torrents!!! More importantly, thanks to those who supply them!!! :D

Wasn't there another thread I saw somewhere regarding CABLE coverage of Bundesliga in the US recently??? I swear someone listed the changes that occured last week... the game with Gladbach I believe is on Setena or whatever it is called.
