Haha sure it's still very raw obviously. It was hard for us to chill in 2010 when Lampard's goal was disallowed. That hurt people more than the defeat! Even if we went on to lose, we wanted it to have been from 2-2 onwards. And yes and we joke about the Queen being German too I hope you didn't take 2006 out on your wife I remember the defeat. I hope we don't have to have another penalty shoot-out at Euro 2012 for God's sake!
No, but my mother-in-law just didn't get it. She had no idea what it meant to me. She viewed it as just another reason to celebrate - with food. "It's a football match, we all eat and drink and be happy - who cares who wins or loses?" Her "Oh solo mio..." chants after we lost made me want to just.... *connection lost*
Sure. Well the expectation in England is very low after 2010 and the new manager, so maybe the players will be more relaxed this time. Germany will have more pressure as a favourite.
Starting to reconcile myself with this loss. After reading some posts from fans and non-fans. Here's my take. Time for me to get over this and move on to the EM. 'Winning isn't everything, it's how you played the game' I don't think Bayern is made that way, perhaps other teams are. Different philosophy, one that buys players and if a youth member makes it through then great. WINNING is the goal there, sooner rather than later. It's not perfect, but it's made FC Bayern the winningest team in Germany, now matter how good any other domestic team's current form is. I'd take Mourinho and a diver's gamesmanship all the way to the Treble over some well played loss anyday. Chelsea's 'anti-football' won them their first CL. I can't hate on that. It got results. Congrats to them.
Drogba and Chech are amazing players and they deserved the title. Cannot say I'm glad for them, but they deserved to win something like this. I don't think Germany had a loser mentality in 2002. I think they did pretty well considering the level of talent in the team. Agree, you cannot just overlook something like that.
http://blogs.soccernet.com/chelsea/archives/2012/05/chelsea_immortals_reduce_grown.php Classy, and magnanimous blog from a Chelsea fan...
I'm not sure where the idea that this generation doesn't have the winning mentality has come from. Does no one else remember the 80s and 90s? Bayern and Germany lost a slew of Finals and Semifinals during that time. We did eventually win some championships, and I think this generation of players is still maturing. Hell most of our players aren't even at their peak yet. Give them time, they will come good.
For the German national team, that is right. Most players are not in their peak and wont be for another 2-3 years but for Bayern there are many who are at their peak - Neuer,Schweinsteiger, Lahm,Gomez,Ribery,Robben,Rafinha while Van Buyten,Tymoshchuk and Olic in their 30s are very experienced and still very good players. That's 10 players. 9 of them played in the final.
Most of those players are entering their peak years. We basically have 3-4 seasons with Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Neuer and Gomez at their peak. Gustavo, Kroos, Badstuber, Alaba, Mueller, etc are not yet at that stage in their career, while Robben and Ribery are at the tale end of their peak years.
10 years from now most of these players will still be around. If they still haven't won anything by then then we can talk about this. That said, I do think this team is quite frail mentally because there are just too many examples of them collapsing under pressure. Hate the "unlucky" excuse to be honest. Very disappointed that so many of the pundits and club officials went that route.
Yes! I never again want to hear any of our players say that Bayern 'deserved to win' or that another team 'didn't deserve a win.' Football isn't about which team builds winning karma through positive play. You win by either being a boss and creating opportunities or by being an opportunist and sneaking one back. Bayern wants to be the boss and I applaud that. But whether a boss or an opportunist, you win by putting one past the other team, whether thats 1 of 10 or 1 of 1. It's the numerator that matters, not the denominator.
Just Checking in... Still alive but barely. I found out that 1 nail couldn't support my weight. Reminder to self; Get bigger nails and replace rope with chain
Why Weren't We bombing down the flanks and crossing enough???...The few times we did that the Chelsea defence looked in shambles...Yet, we were intent on slowly passing it around in the middle without an ounce of penetration!!!... Like someone said IF WE LOSE A FINAL THE NEXT TIME,LET IT NOT BE BECAUSE WE SHAT OUR PANTS!!!!!!!....Biggest match of your sporting careers and your a freaking bag of Nerves?!!?!??...Go out there and play to your strength and the Result will sort itself out!!!!..Schweini turning away when Robben was taking his penalty Summed it up Perfectly!!!..Chelsea seized the initiative then and never looked back... Funnily playing at the Allianz worked against Us!!!!...We would have taken this if it was Elsewhere..just the sheer obsession of wanting to Win in our own stadium in front of our Fans trampled them!!!! This was the Stage for Ribery and Robben to announce to the World that they're right up there with Ronaldo and Messi..........They Failed Miserably.....Not many of you have said it but Ribery was shockingly Poor. We're Bayern Munich. And We'll be Back.Like Always. CHIN UP.
I was in Munich for the final, and watched it with a fellow fan and BigSoccerite. This, and the discussions we had afterwards, helped me to slowly start the recovery process. I had flown out frpm London in my FCB shirt, but found myself sloping back home - unbadged - with quite a few Chelsea fans around me. Whilst waiting for my connecting flight at Zürich airport, I couldn't get those images out of my head - it was a truly empty feeling, far worse than it had been in 1987 or even 1999. Bayern made the most chances. They had twenty corners to one. The dominated the game. On any other day, they would have won. Easily. But they didn't, and that's football I'm afraid. One can say that we deserved to win until we are a shade-of-Chelsea-blue in the face, but it won't change anything; it was just not to be, and during the match there was this creeping feeling of foreboding. Yes, we should have won. Gomez should have scored early on. Robben should have scored that penalty - or at least he should have done better with it. But Chelski did their homework, played to their strengths and called upon a goalkeeper that had a stunning game. They were defensive, they were boring - but they scored when they had to, and got the result we all craved. I have nothing against Chelsea as a club, but to see that worm John Terry get his dirty paws on the cup was perhaps the biggest stab in the heart of all. The big moment for me came when Thomas Müller was substituted. OK, I have heard elsewhere that he might have been slightly injured, but Chelsea were not to know this. The change would have been seen as a clear sign that we were going spend the last few minutes defending - encouraging the opposition to come at us. And come at us they did. The mission should have been just to keep playing to same way and see things through. Then there's the penalty in extra time. As soon as Robben stepped up, we all looked at each other. Nobody immediately said anything, there were just looks that said "oh, no. No, no, no. Not him." After his lucky one against Real, I would never have wanted him to take it - and when he succeeded in passing it to Cech we were all vindicated. What's worse however is that we all said Schweini should have taken it - but after his effort in the shoot-out, would he have done any better than Arjen? We'll never know. One man to come out of this really well was Manuel Neuer - the man truly does have Eier. There are so many ifs and buts that it simply does nobody any good to continue dwelling on things. We need to take stock of this and move on, as this is a great side that is more than capable of winning this trophy.
The whole city of Munich should be commended for this "despite our huge disappointment, our fans behaved fantastically. All over the city, in the squares, the streets and the pubs, and at the Public Viewing events, the atmosphere during the match was joyful and celebratory. We're proud of our supporters. Despite the defeat, despite the shock and the grief, they behaved with dignity, style and Bavarian hospitality" http://www.fcbayern.telekom.de/en/news/news/2012/35185.php Highly doubt this would have been the case had a similar city/team in a similar situation
Man for heaven's sake, Chelsea's tactics did not win them the final. They were defending for 120 minutes with 10 men, yes. but they were utter $hit except their goalkeeper who made some saves. Bayern missed chance after chance. they should have been 3 up by half time, we carved them up but did not score. Their games against Barca same story. Inter won with their defensive tactics in 2010, they closed us out, I remember only one significant shot for Mueller that Julio Caesar saved and thats it. Our players should feel bad because they know they gave the win to Chelsea on a silver platter. they had no business reaching PK's, the game should have been buried by half time. Now its up to the players whether they want to give it a go next season and become ruthless or just fold a dwell on the past.
Totally agree. I'll buy that Muller was injured, but if that's the case I'd have rather seen Muller come off for Olic, not for DvB. Olic would have kept Chelsea in turtle mode.
