Aston Villa coach Alex McLeish heaped praise on 22-year-old Australian Chris Herd, who he hailed as man-of-the-match in Aston Villa's 0-0 draw with Wolverhampton on Saturday night.

The full-back was busy throughout the contest and almost snatched a late winner for his side.

"There's no doubting about his athleticism. Some of his deliveries from wide areas were tremendous. Everything today for Herdy went right. It's about putting a game together consistently for a number of games. That'll be the test for him."

His club mate Shane Lowry is reportedly the target of Ipswich Town, Cardiff City and Middlesbrough, who are interested in getting the defender on loan.

Brett Emerton was handed the captain's armband by Blackburn manager Steve Kean for his farewell appearance at Eawood Park before moving to Sydney FC.

But he didn't get the dream farewell, with his side hitting the woodwork on more than one occasion before conceding a late penalty against Tim Cahill's Everton.

In the nPower Championship, Mile Jedinak completed his first 90 minute display for Crystal Palace in a 1-1 draw against Blackpool, while Rhys Williams (Middlesborough), Neil Kilkenny (Bristol City), Adam Federici (Reading) and Patrick Kisnorbo (Leeds United) started for their sides.

In Holland, Tommy Oar scored an equaliser for FC Utrecht against Roda JC in the Eredivisie, before his side went on to win 3-1.

On the opening day of the new Italian Serie B season, Carl Valeri put in a full shift as Sassuolo defeated Nocerino 3-1.

In Asia, Sasa Ognenovski fired Seongnam Ilhwa into the final of the Korean FA Cup with the opening goal in their 3-0 semi-final win over Pohang Steelers last week. Seongnam, who are currently 13th in the K-League, will face Suwon Bluewings in the final of the FA Cup on October 15.

Josh Kennedy will arrive home with his goalscoring boots on after netting in Nagoya Grampus' 4-1 win over Yokohama F. Marinos' to move into the top two in Japan.

Our kids abroad look promising with Oar getting starts and Ryan Williams getting minutes at Pompey. It's a bit disappointing that Ruka hasn't been featuring as much. All in all, our Aussies Abroad keep looking better and better.

Socceroos defender Jade North has left J-2 champions FC Tokyo to sign a one-year deal with Consadole Sapporo, who have also gained promotion to the Japanese top flight for 2012.

Young Australian Ryan Williams stepped up his footballing education with a lively cameo in Portsmouth's 4-0 FA Cup loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The 18-year-old younger brother of Socceroos defender Rhys Williams came on in the 70th minute for the Championship side's third-round clash against the Barclays Premier League heavyweights.

Williams wasn’t deterred by the big names he came up against, getting involved in a tangle with John Terry that resulted in the Chelsea captain receiving a yellow card, and then getting a caution himself after a foul on England left back Ashley Cole.

Williams, whose twin brother Aryn is at Burnley, has made the most of Portsmouth's financial and injury problems in recent times to push himself to the fringe of the senior team.

The older Williams brother, Rhys, and his teammate Scott McDonald put in shifts for Middlesbrough as they progressed to the fourth round with a 1-0 win over Shane Cansdell-Sherriff’s Shrewsbury Town. Middlesbrough will next meet local rivals Sunderland.

Meanwhile, one of the forgotten men of the Socceroos’ 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign, Richard Garcia, started his first match of the season for Hull City as they beat fellow Championship side Ipswich Town 3-1 to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Aussies James Wesolowski and Alex Cisak featured in one of the most controversial ties of the round when they travelled to Anfield with Oldham Athletic to take on Liverpool.

Outside of the UK, Socceroos captain Lucas Neill grabbed a rare goal for Al Jazira as they downed Al Wahda 4-2, a result that moves Al Jazira within four points of the league lead.

In Italy’s Serie B, industrious Socceroos midfielder Carl Valeri completed 81 minutes in his return to the Sassuolo starting lineup in their 2-1 win against Juve Stabia

Williams has moved to the permier league, but not the one that we expected:

Ryan Williams has joined Fulham FC from Portsmouth until 2014 for an undisclosed fee.

The 18-year-old Australian winger is a product of Portsmouth’s Academy.

Williams made six appearances for Portsmouth this season prior to his deadline day move to Craven Cottage.

442 quoted the fee as being 500,000 pounds.

Whereas the other Williams had a 6 million pound bid turned down by Boro from Bolton.

ENGLISH Championship promotion contenders Middlesbrough have reportedly turned down a £6million bid from Bolton for Socceroo Rhys Williams.

Probably a good move for Rhys and Boro. It'd suck if Rhys finally moved to the PL only to be relegated with Bolton while Boro gets promoted.

And finally Bulut heads off to Turkey

YOUNG Socceroos striker Kerem Bulut has left Czech club Mlada Boleslav on deadline day to join Turkish Super Lig outfit Eskisehirspor according to reports.

The 19-year-old ex-Sydney FC forward, who won the Golden Boot at the 2010 AFC Under-19 Championship with seven goals, has joined the Turkish side after a medical check.

An agreement had been agreed in principle between the two parties, but on deadline day Eskisehirspor press officer Erdal Sabhaz told Turkish media that the deal had been completed.

Eskisehirspor are currently ninth in the Super Lig but are on a run of seven matches without a win.

Bulut could partner former Fulham and West Bromwich striker Diomansy Kamara in attack at Eskisehirspor.

Tottenham sign Australian youngster Giancarlo Gallifuoco

Tottenham have signed former Australia under-16 international Giancarlo Gallifuoco.

The 18-year-old joins Spurs on a two-and-a-half-year deal after impressing the club during a December trial.

The midfielder had been playing non-league football in his homeland after ending his involvement in the Australian national setup to trial in Europe.

"It's a dream come true for me," he told World Game.
"I'm thrilled and I have not stopped pinching myself since Spurs offered me a contract.

"I was once told at the AIS [Australian Institute of Sport] that I was not good enough and here I am on the books of one of the world's greatest clubs training with some of my heroes.

TEENAGE striker Peter Skapetis has joined the growing Aussie contingent in England’s Premier League, signing for Queens Park Rangers.

Skapetis signed a deal that will keep him in London until 2014.

He had previously joined Birmingham City after being handpicked by scouts at Rowville Second College’s school sports academy in Melbourne, whose head coac h was former Rangers defender Stuart Munro.

Fifteen year old Sydneysider Alusine Fofanah has also flown to the UK after he was recently snapped up by Manchester City.

Rangers has accepted an offer for Australia midfielder Matt McKay from Korea Republic club Busan I'Park.

The transfer, if completed, would give Rangers a much-needed injection of cash and reduce its wage bill as administrators look to cut costs at the club.

Michael Jenning's cousin (NRL star for those not in the know) is going to the LA Galaxy to join their youth squad.

It's not every day a 13-year-old boy gets to impress David Beckham. But for Leroy Jennings, two seconds of glory - an inch-perfect slide tackle on Beckham's 13-year-old son Brooklyn - may change his life forever.

Jennings, the cousin of Penrith NRL star Michael Jennings, is flying to the US today to sign a one-year deal with Major League Soccer club Los Angeles Galaxy.

The Sydney teenager will join the club's youth ranks after a successful trial in which he was selected by the directors of the youth academy - and even Beckham himself. It was during a game in a nine-day football workshop run by the Galaxy in January, that Jennings was the standout performer.

''I tackled him [Brooklyn Beckham], I got the ball and had to play on,'' Jennings said. ''It was two seconds of glory. After the game, the director of the youth academy asked [David] Beckham who were the stand-outs and he replied with me.''

Italy (Serie B) – Carl Valeri has enjoyed 90 minutes each week for Sassuolo as they continue there fight for automatic promotion. Having conceded only one goal in the past five outings, Valeri has proved key in Sassuolo's charge.

Germany (Bundesliga) – Dissapointing to see our boys struggle for game time in Germany's elite competition. Mitch Langerak (Borussia Dortmund) did manage a rare start in a cup tie where he managed to keep a clean sheet. Matthew Leckie's limited game time saw him end the month in the reserves to gain match fitness. Rukavytsya could only manage one start during February as his side moved into the relegated zone.

Germany (2. Bundesliga) – Robbie Kruse has been largely unsighted recently at Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Netherlands (Eredivsie) – Brett Holman has added "assist provider" to his resume in another productive month at AZ. Our Aussies at F.C Utrecht have done nothing spectacular recently, with Tommy Oar notably underwhelming for the Dutch side.

Scotland (Premier) – Ryan McGowan continues his steady season for Heart of Midlothian, having now made 15 starts this campaign.

Austria (Bundesliga) - The long awaited transfer of James Holland to Austria Wien has proved an instant success, starting his first three games for the club since the move.

Zullo restless at Utrecht

Socceroos defender Michael Zullo fears his career is stagnating at Dutch club Utrecht and lack of game time is damaging his chances of playing for Australia.

The former Brisbane Roar player has become increasingly frustrated, having not started a match since November 26.

Zullo was a regular fixture in the run-on side early in the season but a change of coach and a series of niggling injuries reduced his appearances to a trickle in his second season at the club.

The left-back has slipped behind Davy Bulthuis in the pecking order since Jan Wouters replaced Erwin Koeman as coach in October.

Utrecht sits only two points above the drop zone in the Dutch top-flight with nine matches to go this season even if they have a kind run home.

If it was relegated, that would not only affect Zullo but compatriots Adam Sarota and Tommy Oar who have also been used sparingly at the club recently.

Jason Davidson made his debut for Heracles last night. According to his wiki, he was playing in the centre of defense. Heracles beat Utrecht 3-1, Oar came off the bench in the 83rd minute.

Which Asian nation is the latest to start snapping up Aussie players en masse?

Believe it or not, it's Thailand. Former Socceroo Paul Reid has signed with Police United - where former Adelaide assistant coach Phil Stubbins is in charge - and prolific Scottish Premier League striker Danny Invincibile has turned up at Army United.

Adrian Caceres, one of the few players to represent four A-League clubs, has taken a deal with Chirangari United. Ex-Perth Glory youth assistant Andrew Ord has scored a job in charge of BEC Tero Sasana. In the second division, Caceres's former Central Coast teammate Brad Porter has taken a deal with Bangkok United.

It is a sign of how flush with cash the Thai football economy has become that he is earning an estimated $100,000 a season.

Australian striker Jamie Maclaren is making quite the impression at English Premier League outfit Blackburn Rovers.

The 18-year-old signed for the club in 2009 and has been a consistent scorer for Blackburn's academy over the past three seasons, which have also included several reserve team appearances.

"My time at Blackburn has been quality," Maclaren said.

"I've been to Thailand on one of the pre-season tours and I've played against a lot of experienced guys who have played a lot of games in the Premier League.

"I have scored a lot of goals. It has been a good time for me. I've been progressing with the reserves and training with the first team recently."

Things are decidedly bleaker for Chris Herd’s Aston Villa side and as such not looking so rosy for Villa recruit Brett Holman.

Villa's 0-0 draw at West Bromwich Albion means the club remain just three points above the relegation zone although with a better goal difference than the sides below them.

No doubt Holman, who has agreed to join the club from AZ Alkmaar will be keeping a keen eye on proceedings, and with a tough final two games against Tottenham (who are chasing an invaluable UEFA Champions League spot) and Norwich at Carrow Road, taking any points may be tough for Villa.

While we’re talking relegation and promotion despite Socceroos defender Rhys Williams having side a new four-year deal there is still speculation he may have played his last match for nPower Championship club Middlesbrough after they missed out on the promotion playoffs.

They lost 2-1 at Watford on the final day and were unable to catch sixth-placed Cardiff City.

Williams was subject to a £6 million ($9.41 million) bid from EPL side Bolton during the January transfer window.

With Bolton in the thick of a relegation dogfight this season, the 23-year-old opted not to push for a change of club, but he could be a potential transfer target for other Premier League clubs.

Over on the continent Mitchell Langerak enjoyed a rare outing for Borussia Dortmund after the club wrapped up their second straight Bundesliga title this month.

Australia's James Troisi is clubless but is confident of resolving his future within the next three weeks, with a European club his preferred destination.

Troisi, who with the backing of the PFA, walked out on Turkish Superliga outfit Kayserispor earlier this month after not being paid for well over five months.

Attacking midfielder Troisi, who notched 12 goals for Kayserispor last season, is suffering no mental scars from his Turkish misadventure, according to his father.
"Mentally James is in great shape," Alby said. "This has been something that went on for a while and came to a head.
"Now we just have to look at where his career goes next."

Lots of papers are saying that Curtis Good has signed/will sign with Newcastle
This is what the Daily Mail had to say:

The 19-year-old recently enjoyed a successful two-week trial with the Magpies and is expected to put pen to paper shortly.

Good, who graduated from the Australian Institute of Sport, is valued at £400,000.

The teenager signed his first professional contract with Heart in February and has earned praise for his commanding displays in the air while also being comfortable with the ball at his feet.

The player’s agent, Zeljko Susa, told the Herald Sun: 'Discussions are ongoing and we are hopeful of a positive outcome.

'It would be a fantastic opportunity for Curtis to continue his football development with a successful club from one of the world’s best leagues.'

Good played 25 times for the Melbourne side last season - starting 19 of those - as they reached the A-League final for the first time in their history

Nothing too solid in any of the articles I've seen so far, mostly just his agent talking. Spose we'll have to wait and see if anything arises out of this.

CENTRAL Coast Mariners goalkeeper Mathew Ryan will spend a week training with English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur in August.

Ryan, 20, is set to join Spurs in their preparations for the 2012/13 campaign from August 2 after new manager Andre Villas-Boas wrote to the Mariners to request the young shot-stopper's involvement.

Central Coast last week rejected an enquiry from Championship club Burnley for Ryan to undergo a trial at Turf Moor.

And according to the Mariners, no talks have taken place over the potential transfer of Ryan to Spurs.

"It is a magnificent opportunity and experience for Mathew to have a look at a top Premier League club," Mariners chairman Peter Turnbull said.
