Found out through soccernet that former Man United goalkeeper F Barthez is about to join his friend Cantona
Who could forget? http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...page=1&ndsp=14&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0&tx=96&ty=60
Nothing personal but I would have preferred Birkenmaier as GK coach No doubt that Coby, Eric and Fabian were great players, but they had nothing in common with the Cosmos
I would like to see more former players like Birkenmaier, Eskandarian, Neeskens, Carlos Alberto, ... involved And I do have a problem with Cantona saying ''we're back'' because he was never a part of the old Cosmos. He should have said ''the Cosmos is back'' But that is just my humble opinion
You've got a point but he was talking for Pele and Chinaglia as well. Both of which are on board with the project. Other players will jump on board as the project comes closer to fruition.
Cantona is 44, Coby 40 and Barthez 39. None of them could have played with the old Cosmos But anyway great that these former ''soccer superstars'' believe in the new Cosmos
I dunno know man, but people put all of their weird little ideas and projections on to the Cosmos. Cosmos are a business that will (hopefully) culminate in a successful soccer team. I love the players you mention, but really, how much attention do you think it gets -- now that Pele is aboard -- by announcing that Eskandarian has a job with the Cosmos? The Cosmos I suspect are trying to do the best for the business and the future football prospects of the team. Satisfying a peculiar opinion of one particular "fan" is probably not their objective here.
But none of these people were signed to play for the Cosmos. They were brought on for administrative duties.
You are right, Cantona and Barthez are still well known wordwide, while Esky who? and Birky who? pretty much only around the meadowlands
All I'm saying brent is that we will all have our disappointed expectations and wishes with the cosmos. I'm against advertising on kits for chrissake but at the end of the day I do understand why teams do it and the reality of the situation. So I live with it. I am sympathetic to the Cosmos guys (Kemsley and Co.) as long as they are true to their stated goals, one of which is to bring pro soccer to NYC. This is a complicated project they've embarked on, and I get that there will be enough fluff marketing that I will feel like vomiting. But I'm not going to criticize them all the time for it, because what they are doing isn't easy, and they're entitled to make some money on it too. I guess that's my point, I didn't really mean to pick on you.
Yeah I hear you on this. I'll tell you one thing right now. The shirt sponsorship for the Cosmos will be the highest in ALL OF MLS! It might even compete with some European shirt sponsorship numbers.
Well, if it is good for the Cosmos, I will have to accept this Soccer is a game, Pro Soccer is a business
I read a report somewhere that, when you exclude the soccer powerhouses (RM, MUFC, L'pool, now Barca, etc), shirt sponsorship from MLS teams were about equal to lower to mid-level clubs throughout all European leagues. If you don't believe me, I can find the link. But I do agree, Cosmos will be #1 for sure. The international press alone will prove that.
