It's been a couple years since we had the Atlanta MLS team name tournament, and I figure I will create a similar format where voters can vote on their favorite team name. For the record, Atlanta Firebirds won Atlanta MLS 1.0 and Atlanta Legion won 2.0. I think it's fair for whoever wins 3.0 to have to challenge those names. Either way, just name some names that you would like to include on the list. I'll try to include the top 64 names mentioned and their different variations. Maybe I'll go bigger, but we'll see. Anyways, let's just start being creative again. Note: this is meant to be a lighthearted thread, and shouldn't deter us from talking about other subjects.
I've always loved this one, especially since I like the story of Atalanta from mythology. There are old maps of the city where the name is spelled Atalanta, believe it or not.
I liked Terminus when it was first mentioned, but I doubt S.C. will work. Some morons may think the team is from South Carolina

I like S.C. I don't want to get into the debate of why we call it soccer and all that. However, that's what we call it here. Orlando is a Soccer Club. I don't see why Atlanta can't be one as well. Also, it would be different if Atlanta was the only Soccer Club.
Firebird strikes me as being too, well, country-fried - reinforcing the idea the rest of the nation has of us. Buncha firebird drivin' bigots living in trailers. Terminus is interesting - but I'm in favor of having a solid city name: ATL and then a nickname, vis-a-vis Liverpool "Reds" etc.
I think back to that shameful 96 Olympic opening ceremony with the pickup trucks. "Firebird" is a car akin to what Bandit drove.
The name that gets me all hot is Olympic Atlanta. I've heard all the IOC stuff. I think it's a cool name and better then the one I picked. Maybe Olympic 96 or something. However, I think we are going to get the Firebirds. Olympic is unique and Atl would be the only team in North America with the name.
I think Firebirds is the realistic pole leader, as well. Allusion to the Phoenix without formal confusion with the Arizona city that might someday join the league; Keeps the bird theme of pro-sport mascots; Original without being too cartoonish. I could abide Apollos or Flames, too. Not sure about many others I've heard/read. No, no. Firebirds. Not Fried Birds! Rather than any contrived nickname I would indeed rather they go with just Atlanta SC and be known as ______, as well.
Locomotive Atlanta *train theme Atletico Atlanta *Atl plus euroish Atlanta Phoenix FC *city symbol (firebirds sucks), rise up theme, use symbol from falcons Atlanta Legion *empire state of south, military history, and another way of saying united... This one has come up before, as a nickname for Locomotiv Atlanta. It definitely fits with the railroad history of the city, and the rail corridor that the stadium will be built near.
A not-so-common error for those confusing the namesake fo the city, which stems from the Atlantic Ocean and, thus by proxy, the Titan Atlas. To wit: Atlanta Titans? Celestial Atlanta? (Atlas held up the heavens) Navigators? (Role in transportation)
But hasn't the city also forsaken that element enough to make the connection seem tangential? Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of expanding rail service on all fronts and wish Atlanta had retained the viability of passenger service, but we're generations and billions of dollars from seeing anything more than existing access to NO and DC on that front. If we were to go that route, I'd also prefer Express to Locomotive: We need to limit the direct allusions to European names and I'm not sure this connection is prominent enough to overcome the perception of posing. OMO, anyway.
