What's good for the goose... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ9To30Hz7A"]YouTube - Christian extremists disrupt Hindu Senate invocation[/ame] How about we not have prayer in government proceedings, period?
Alright well take Cinco De Mayo or St. Patricks Day. Do people really care what influenced the holidays or is it simply a time for celebration? Everyone celebrates those. The secularist who wants to make believe Christmas excludes people is foolish. I know of many people of all different faiths that celebrate Christmas.
Yep. This is a solid video explaining why everyone should be free to celebrate Christmas. It never belonged to Christians in the first place. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSOso1iyJ-w"]YouTube - Christmas Card from an Atheist[/ame]
Allright. I'm willing to participate in Super Bowl Sunday and even host a Super Bowl party, as long as I don't have to actually watch the game.
Church people are very fcuking weird. Especially here, and especially the fundamental types. No shit, just this week I met a preacher who runs a private school (of about 40 kids born to idiots) who does not believe in plate tectonics. In fact, the science class there teaches it is a lie and makes that Kentucky creationist museum look reasonable.
I guess somebody in their marketing department decided it would be a good idea to diversify in order to sell more mugs and baseball caps.
Well then, they have an American-hating, godless heathen in their midst. They must ferret out this commie bastard immediately.
Maybe this has been posted elsewhere, but it's interesting that not only according to one survey do athiests/agnostics know much more than Christians about world religions, but they also know a bit more than Christians about Christianity. Well, as determined by these particular questions. http://pewforum.org/Other-Beliefs-and-Practices/U-S-Religious-Knowledge-Survey.aspx
That tends to be the case because most of us come from religious upbringing. We didn't arrive at our atheism overnight. We've spent years in study and contemplation before we coming to our final conclusion. Plus, the antidote for religious indoctrination tends to be education.
i wouldn't expect a high percentage of evangelical Christians to know what the Catholic Church teaches about the elements in communion. i know because i've been exposed to the specific teaching, but it's not relevant to Protestant Christianity. there are several questions in the survey that are general knowledge questions about "Eastern" religions. whether a Christian should know those is debatable. it probably has something to do with education level. i had to ponder the nirvana question a bit before i said "Buddhism". i think i remembered that Siddhartha was not Hindu before he developed his spiritual philosophy. there is no doubt that non-Christians are better educated than Christians, especially in non-urban areas. but part of the problem of any kind of survey like this is that some people think they are Christians because they go to church. they would identify as such, even if they had never read any of the bible, except when it's projected on to a screen in their church sanctuary on Sunday. self-identification having to do with something as abstract as "discipleship", which is what Jesus preached, is very unreliable. unless there is a significant change in behaviour and attitude, a person's saying that he/she is a Christian is nearly meaningless. the process of becoming more and more like Jesus, which is what Christianity involves, cannot be done without being obedient to what Jesus taught, and that is a training/learning process, not of an academic nature but a behavioural nature.
in response to this post, which was made in November, i discovered that i had been given neg rep, with the following comment: talk about ironic! reacting to a post in the Spirituality and Religion forum, in a thread about atheists debating. hey, buddy. what did you expect? atheists post in threads started by Christians. Christians should refrain from posting in threads started by atheists?
