And, an update on the Premier League U.S. rights. Deadline extended to Oct. 26. http://epltalk.com/2012/10/19/bidding-for-premier-league-tv-rights-in-u-s-extended-one-more-week
On that page there's a poll, which lists: Let's pray the EPL looks at what viewers like us have to say! The ones who actually want to be able to find the games to watch! The eyeballs that the advertisers are after! Rather than the filthy rich oil barrons who can outbid anyone but who don't really have anywhere close to a broadcast platform to base their bid on.
I checked "Get Access" again today and now the message has been changed to: Although I'm a bit disappointed it will be months instead of weeks, it is indeed a positive acknowledgement for all us Cablevision subscribers that finally we'll be allowed into the Espn3 club! (after how many years?!)
Interesting that Fox and ESPN are making a joint bid. I guess they're both happy with the status quo.
Good lord, it's chaos. Deadline for U.S. Premier League TV rights bids was today. Sports Business Journal reports that Fox and ESPN DROPPED OUT of bidding. They say NBC Universal is the favorite. BeIN is still in, could be a wild card. Wow. Wow. Wow. Update: Grant Wahl tweeted that Fox issued a news release confirming they and ESPN will not be involved. Update, again: Now sounds like Fox/ESPN didn't drop out, just outbid. From Fox news release - "We were disappointed to learn today that EPL has elected to move forward with a different media partner despite Fox's aggressive bid."
Oh god... if it's anybody other than Fox+ESPN, I figure that'll mean much less EPL on the telly for us, and much fewer AFC games watchable in our homes on match day. Where is good ole Rupert Murdoch when you need him??! Oh yeah, hiding from the constabularies.
Sources say NBC's bid would pay the EPL around $83M per year, an amount that would more than triple the $23M per year that Fox currently pays. http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Closing-Bell/2012/10/26/EPL.aspx
I don't suppose NBC's bid is in any way public right? IOW, what channels would they be using to show live & same-day matches?
Just throwing some stuff around ... NBC Sports, NBC Sports Network, USA and Telemundo could show live matches Streaming other matches through Hulu?
Yeah that's certainly 100X better than what BeIN could do. But still nothing like what Fox can do with it's 2 soccer-specific channels FSC/FSP & their FSN affliates. It's truly amazing the amount of EPL & Arse content that we can get on those! I can't remember the last AFC match that I couldn't watch live, or (in a few rarer cases) on same-day-delay. I'm still PRAYING that Fox+Espn can win this bid in the end. I hope the clock hasn't completely run out.
curious, what is the availability of prem + cl games in the States. How many games do you see on 'basic tv' espn etc vs how many more games you would see subscribing to soccer specific channels?
You mean like they're folding? Who is SBJ? Edit: Oh I see "Sports Business Journal"... is their word gold?
Typically Espn2 shows 1 EPL game/week live (sometimes 2)... never aired on their TV channels again AFAIK. Unlike Fox who will show 3-4 live EPL games/week, and many more on same-day-delay, and many of those get replayed later during the week. The same goes for Fox and UCL. In short, Fox rocks with their EPL coverage. On the last day of the 11-12 season they pulled this stunt of showing virtually every match live on their various channels, affiliates, web-streams. I always thought they did that partly to use as leverage in the bids that are wrapping up today. Even if so, it seems like we're going to kiss those days goodbye.
up here we get the early game on ESPN on our version of it TSN. We then get two 10AM kickoffs and the 1230 kickoff live on the basic tv channels (no additional charges.) however this season along with the pay channel (15$) a month we get an additional 5 or 6 channels that show live games so all epl and champions league games are available then which is pretty good value I would have to say
Sounds like your basic coverage is as good as ours, but that option to get all additional games live is pretty fantastic. I don't think we can get that... certainly not on my cable provider. Hopefully you get to keep that awesomeness up there, and aren't affected by this NBC deal down here.
NBC isn't a disaster, not yet anyway. This might mark the end of Fox Soccer though - they have nothing left, other than Champions League. There's still a possibility that NBC might sublicense a few back to ESPN or Fox. That doesn't seem likely though. NBC has a lot of channels, but none are natural fits, other than NBC sports. I don't know what kind of preexisting contracts NBC, NBC Sports, Telemundo, and all have that could interrupt. Maybe they'll throw USA into the mix? Let's wait to hear more...
The other big disappointment is ESPN. Pretty soon, they'll have nothing but the occasional friendly. Sad to see them go from investing big in soccer to kicked out completely.
I'll bet NBC now buys another outlet, like the moribund GolTV, to show some matches. And an online service. They're not spending $83 million to show a three or four games a weekend.
for example this week, Arsenal game is on the main channel, the 3 lesser 10am games are live on the plus channels. Same goes for the CL games. Pretty good for 15$ a month
I think they'd put overflow games on CNBC. Comcast showed during the Stanley Cup Playoffs that they have no problem showing sports there. They currently just air paid programming during weekend mornings, so it is a perfect fit.
I'm not sure what to think. As for Fox, it's a bit weird, because they have the Champions League, Europa League and.. the World Cup from 2016. And nothing else. :| It'll be more Comcast-friendly if indeed NBC does win it. I'd imagine there could be games on regional Comcast SportsNet channels? Or am I understanding their relationship wrong?
I think Fox will rebrand and combine channels. But that depends on how tight their contracts are with carriers. But starting next year, they'll only have the FA cup and the champions league. Friendlies can only do so much. BeIN has the rights to the other leagues for the next few years. Not sure when Mexican rights are up, but they'll never outbid any of the established channels. But they obviously expected to win. Fox just hired Grant Wahl. They have the World Cup coming up. US television rights are a disaster right now...
