So Porto was charged with tampering 2 games and gets 6 points deducted and a 2 year suspension for the president - Boavista was charged with tampering 3 games and gets dropped a division and former president is suspended 4 years? Based on Porto's punishment, Boavista should be deducted 9 points (6pts/2gms = 3pts per game) and the former president should be suspended 3 years (2yrs/2gms = 1yr per game). What am I missing???? And Leiria, charged with tampering 1 game so the president gets 1 year suspension, ok the math makes sense, but no points deduction??? I know that the points deduction doesnt matter for Leiria as they are gonna finish last anyway but the points deduction doesnt effect Porto either. And what the heck do these suspensions mean for the Presidents? Is PDC gonna be barred from all Presidential duties? and barred from the Dragao? Why not just make them resign??? It doesnt make sense..... And why a ref found guilty of cheating is suspended and not terminated indefinitely makes no sense either. Cheating is cheating, no matter to what degree.
Because this is Portugal, not Italy? Boavista -> coercion of the referee = relegation. FC Porto -> corruption in the attempted form of two refs for two games = -6 points. I see no big difference in neither. The punishment should’ve been similar! One is imposed influence (by threats?), the other is throe bribery. Corruption: 1-Bribery attempt 2-Bribery accepted 3-Bribery consummated in the pitch (*the piece missing for Porto’s relegation as I understand it) Paulo Costa explained the difference on tv and even said (regarding corruption) the rules need to change. ps: hope I made sense. Sometimes it's difficult to explain things in a different language...
You made sense in explaining it, if it actually makes sense is a different story. So in the end Boavista gets punished more severely for having cheated successfully??? Thats stupid, any attempt at corruption should all be treated the same.
Good Editorial - by Luis Avelas (Record) Justiça total ou parcial? A Liga prometeu e cumpriu.
Also I dont get the following, Porto were only deducted 6 points (and not forced to drop division) for TRYING to bribe the refs but the Refs were suspended for TRYING to cheat in the Beira Mar - Porto game??? Does this make sense?? If the ref tried to cheat on Porto's behalf doesnt that mean that they accepted Porto's bribe, thus Porto did accomplish its intent of corruption but it was the ref that failed to perform it??? Otherwise if the ref had said no to the bribe he would not be suspended. Right???
I don't know, but I don't see how this corrects anything. Granted, even I think punishing Porto to relegation is too severe since then the league will lose even more money as it is, but certainly I think a bigger point deduction was in order. As far as relegating Boavista, I think that's bullshit in the highest degree. If you don't relegate Porto you can't relegate another team, far as I'm concerned.
The ref accepted, but it had no influence in the game, so step 1 and 2 were proven. But all three steps must be proven (by the present regulations) fot the relegation drop punishment, that's why they are going to change the regulations for the future.
But the actions by Porto & Boavista were the same, the only difference was what the ref did so the punishment should be the same.
Here the big fish won't go down... edit: (oh, by the way. It's Ricardo Costa and not Paulo like I said earlier...)
This is just the tip of the iceberg. Porto has been corrupt since the late 80's when PDC first took over. Unfortunately this incidents are the only one's they can prove. While this does tarnish the Club's championships, it does not do as much damage as it should. Bullies and cheaters have no place in Futebol and I think the suspensions are too light, PDC should be forced to resign not be banned from sitting on the bench for 2 years...
I agree, a 2 year ban from sitting on the bench is nonsense. I also agree that this is just the tip of the iceburg. If PDC was bribing refs in 2003/04 when Porto had an awesome team I can only imagine what he was doing before!!!
Full list of fines and suspensions: Castigos decorrentes do Apito Final FC Porto: 6 pontos; 150 mil euros. Pinto da Costa: 2 anos suspensão; 10 mil euros. Boavista: Descida divisão; 180 mil euros. João Loureiro: 4 anos suspensão; 25 mil euros. União de Leiria: Menos 3 pontos; 40 mil euros. João Bartolomeu: 1 ano suspensão; 4 mil euros. Martins dos Santos (árbitro): 3 anos suspensão. Augusto Duarte (árbitro): 6 anos suspensão. Marinho Santos Silva (árbitro assistente): 2 anos e meio suspensão. Jacinto Paixão (árbitro): 4 anos suspensão. José Chilrito (árbitro): 2 anos e meio suspensão. Manuel Quadrado (árbitro): 2 anos e meio suspensão.
wow, I can't believe what I'm reading... Porto gets 6 pts. deducted because Antonio Araujo paid for some prostitutes requested by Jacinto Paixao on his way to Porto for the weekend (mind you, no one from Porto initiated a call to this referee and asked for any help in the Porto-Amadora game which Porto won without any favorable calls and where people have reviewed the game and even admitted Porto was penalized on a non-penalty call on Deco). How is this different from some empresario (which Antonio Araujo is an example) paying the tab for a dinner for a referee and his colleagues in a restaurant??? 2nd: where's the proof PDC even handed any money to the ref of the Beira Mar - Porto game? It all started w/ Carolina Salgado admitting there was no exchange of money, later she claims she "thinks" there was some exchange, then she claimed SHE SAW AN ENVELOPE w/ 3,000 EUROS and she couldn't even name the correct game involved!!! Great witness. 3rd: when was the trial? anyone know? Proved guilty without trial, great judicial system in Portugal. We should all know this will be appealed and hopefully the FPF will have the common sense to use better judgement than the Benfiquista led Comissao Disciplinar da Liga... BTW, PDC's suspension = can't sit in Porto's bench during games, can't attend League meetings, can't attend League drawings of games for 2 years; Boy that HURTS!
For anyone who thought Juventus got away with a slap on the wrist should look at this case. It's a joke.
Trial? That's still going in courts and goes by the name of "Apito Dourado". This is The "Apito Final". And by the looks of it, I'm pretty sure you didn't watch Ricardo Costa surprisingly saying they had very reliable proof, and that the phone calls were not even the most important evidence! In the process! They could disapear and they would still get to this same conclusion. Oh, and the ‘escutas’ are legal, they asked permition from a judge before making them! There goes Pinto da Costa’s court defence down the drain!
CSD...unfortunately you are still living in denial...thinking that a Regional Club like Porto could win all of these championships without cheating.
What should have been years of glory for FC Porto, are instead years of shame for Portugal! Years and years of LIES!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuY6bE8GhAQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXu7kU-BHFY&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SM8bQCSlWVM&NR=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4m-JlvJv58 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHZmoDxftHQ&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqS9BmIIBAE&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LecMeAZo7CM&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zMUPWlVAaI&feature=related
FC Porto accepts the punishment and won't appeal the decision. Pretty clear statement to me, and to whoever claims their innocence.
Wow, months and months of this apito dourado BS and this is how it ends??? Complete Bullshit, Porto are a disgrace, the whole league is a disgrace!!! None of these penalties make sense to me I'm truly disgusted ( not surprised) on how things are done in Portugal. Deducting 6 points from a team who has a 20 point lead and the title clinched That's like shooting a guy in the head when he's already dead!!! Justice was not served today !!!
