The 1945/46 Monterrey team.

What is best known about the 1945/46 Monterrey team is that they allowed 14 goals in a game. To date, the 0-14 scoreline against Veracruz (eventual champions of the 45/46 season) remains a record in Mexico's top flight division. Another dubious record that Monterrey set in that season is that they allowed 133 goals (4.4 goals per game).

Many fans (including Monterrey fans) are not aware of what this team had to endure 60 years ago. Stats books can be a bit cruel, especially when all you can determine are numbers, and not the adversity that teams confront.

The league had become professional just 2 seasons prior to the 1945/46 competition. Football's popularity started to grow and many provincial cities were anxiously waiting to register a club. Enrique Ayala Medina, a leading industrialist in Monterrey, founded the club on June 28, 1945, 2 months prior to start of the 1945/46 season. Monterrey made their debut on August 19, 1945 in front of their home crowd against San Sebastian, a game in which they won 1-0. The following week, Monterrey suffered a devasting 0-6 loss at the hands of Moctezuma.

On the night of September 15 1945, the team was traveling to Guadalajara to face Oro (ex- first division club). The team bus stopped at a gas station in San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco, 90 miles northeast of Guadalajara, Jalisco. The events to follow show how insignificant a sport is when compared to matters that are of life or death. A careless pedestrian walked near the station and put out his cigarette butt near the gas pumps. The bus quickly set on fire with the team in the bus. Some players were able to escape unharmed, but the majority suffered serious burns which eventually caused them to retire from the season. Unfortunately, 2 members of the team, Guillermo "Cuadros" Vidal and Costa Rican international, Enrique Lizano Benavides, passed away days after the incident due to medical complications.

In an act of consolation, many clubs willingly loaned out players in hopes that the team could finish the season. Monterrey accepted those players, but the damage had been done. Monterrey eventually had a disasterous season. They obtained 14 points out of a possible 60 points. There last game of the season was played on June 23, 1946. The team decided to call it quits after the season, which left the city of Monterrey without a football team.

The largest margin of victory came on Feb 19, 1995, between 2 3rd division squads, Tampico-Madero and Truenos de Acuna. Tampico Madero won the match 29-0. Ramon Arroyo scored 17 of the 29 goals.

i remember that.

However, the article I have specifically mentioned games suspended due to bookings. There have been more (officials suspending matches after rioting, etc).

Atletas Campesinos.

It seems that teams from Queretaro have a curse and Atl. Campesino was not the exception. In 1978, the city of Queretaro had 2 second division clubs, Los Lobos and Los Estudiantes. Armando Presa, a wealty farmer, bought both teams and renamed each team, Atletas Industriales and Atletas Campesinos. Presa sold Industriales to a university the following year, but kept the majority of the players. Under Antonio Ascencio, the team won its promotion. It is interesting to note that Antonio Carbajal acted as a coaching advisor during the remaining 8 games of the season, however, neither Asencio nor Carbajal were kept for thier first season in the top flight.

Atl. Campesinos debuted during the 1980/81 season against Neza. Atl. Campesinos' run in the first division lasted 2 seasons. Thier last game in the first division was against the first team they faced, Neza.

Ecuadorian international, Italo Estupin~an was their maximum goalscerer (18).

Jose Alvarez Crespo may be one of a kind (at least in Mexico) considering that he scored the first and last goal in a club's history.

Nuevo Leon (not to be confused with UANL) played three seasons in Mexico's first division. They played the following seasons--1966/67, 1967/68, and 1968/69.

Felipe Buergo arbitro un partido entre Guadalajara y el Veracruz en el Pto Jarocho. En ese entonces jugaba el 'Tigre' Sepulveda con las chivas. En una jugada, el Tigre metio la pata muy fuerte y levanto al 'Loquito' Aussin por lo aires. Como el arbitro no sanciono la falta como debia, el 'Cuca' Herrera le reclamo enojadisimo; "vio usted la entrada?" Y Buergo le contesto como si nada: "si, vino mucha gente".
