To be fair I thought Goodson was very very good while he was in MLS. Was not shocked by his move to Europe or USMNT call-ups/performances at all.
If we cannot find better central defenders than Bocanegra this cycle we won't qualify. As for the MLS guys, if any of them actually do develop the way we hope they have plenty of time to go to Europe, so I wouldn't hold it against them for now. My absurdly early pairing is Gooch and Opara, once we settle on them we can nickname it Goochopara, has a nice ring to it. Then again Goochagbossoumonde sounds even better. I think I will go with that one, Goochream doesn't do it for me.
George John is in his third year. If he's on a 4 year deal then maybe he'll venture overseas after 2012.
From what I've seen I don't expect him to have any problems getting a contract in one of the Scandinavian leagues. Question is how high is his ceiling after that?
Goodson went to Norwegian 2nd division (albeit to a club normally in the TL) after his contract ended in MLS. That's not exactly a brimming endorsement.
Goodson is currently playing at a pretty good club so I'd lock him into our starting XI. I worry that him and Onyewu at CB will be too slow. We should definitely not play an offside trap. What about Jones at CB? He plays CDM so it wouldn't be that different.
I like both of them, but it's hard to picture a Goodson/Gooch pairing. I'd rather have Boca in there for one of them. I know, I'm going to take crap for this, but if Wynn ever got his positioning down - basically just learn not to ball-watch - he could be the monster of the midway. I know, that's a Big If. Ya gotta like that we have prospects. Wish they had another year into the curve in them.
He didn't exactly have much hype behind him when he left the league. No league-wide awards, no publications heralding his prowess, and no caps. Bocanegra, Parkhurst, Barrett, Califf, and Nelsen had all those things. How about that Ryan Nelsen? Most successful MLS cb export ever.
Might explain why he didn't get it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLS_Defender_of_the_Year_Award Not league wide anyway. Did he get it from the club?
my bad. nelsen was on the 2003 and 2004 mls best XIs as a defender. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLS_Best_XI apparently played d-mid in college. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Nelsen
#2 (Big strong CB) 1. Onyewu (FC Twente) 32 (in 2014)* 2. Goodson (Brondby) 32 3. Marshall (Crew) 30 4. Agbossoumonde (Djurgadens) 23 5. Cameron (Houston) 28 6. Gonzalez (Galaxy) 26 #3 (smaller, passer) 1. Bocanegra (St. Etienne). 35 2. DeMerit (Vancouver) 35 3. Opara (S.J. E) 25 4. Ream (NJRB) 27 For me Next 2 years (gold cup and after) Onyewu-Bocanegra (back ups Goodson-DeMerit or Ream) For 2014 and most of the elimination/Confederations cup Onyewu-Opara (Back ups Boss-Ream) Hopefully I will be 75% correct
Sticking with the theme of '14. 1. Gooch. Will be knocking around with a top team in the mid-tier or with a team in a top league. 2. Whitbred. If he stays healthy, will be bouncing being the Prem and the Championship like Demerit before him. 3. Boss. The best placed among the young cbs. Two good seasons in Sweden and he can move to a much bigger league. 4. The MLS guys.
Question. If we play Mexico in the Simis or the Final. Who do we have that can cover: -----------------Hernandez Vela--------------------------------Dos Santos I think we need people with speed and defending skills at RB and LB not a converted midfielder that goes forward too much (a la Spector) What do you all think? It is pretty scary that LB is very weak for the USA, Dos Santos will most likly play RAM, that could get ugly.
It really depends on how Bob works his midfield. It's gonna have to be a delicate balance between our fullback options and our DM options.
