In all the post- and pre-World Cup hype currently going on, has anyone been taking any notice of the fact that the new round of the UEFA Champions' League is starting today?

The fixtures list for the mini-tournaments that make up the qualifying round could be turned into quite an interesting geography lesson, I'm sure.

Duisburg, for example, will be playing against Glasgow, Bratislava and Newtownabbey in Northern Ireland (here's to one more Google hit for a place I'd never heard of before), and one of the "stadiums" for the tournament holds as many as 200 spectators.

Will be interesting to se if FCF Juvisy Essonne (FRA) or Breidablik (ISL) takes the spot from group 4.

Sadly, you can't watch these games. :(
Well at least Duisburg won 3:0 today.

So, Duisburg didn't get a free pass to the round of 32?

Nope, because they only finished 2nd in the league. Potsdam as the champions are going straight through.

The UEFA matchtracker - I know I'll be hunting for it later, so let's park it on the first page.

Umeå lost against Apollon Limassol today - is that Cyprus? Anyway, after this they may not make it into the final round.

Holy shit. That's a massive upset.

Not that I care about Umeå, of course. :D

Yep, Cyprus. The team seems to have gathered most of Romania WNT. Not that this explains much, as Romania are around 25th in Europe.

wow. They've got to get a big result today & hope things go their way in the other game. It would be huge if they didn't progress. Even I know that and I don't know much about the game in Europe...

Their result today won't help them as only the matches against the first and third placed team in the group count when you determine the two best second placed teams.
So they will have 3 points and a gd of +-0
But currently there are 4 teams which have a better record against the first and third placed teams in their group.
(NSA Sofia, Breiðablik, Krka and Glasgow City)

Edit: Duisburg scored the 4:0 against Glasgow City and they are now worse than Umea.

"They" being Glasgow, I hope, not Duisburg.

    Of course. :D
Duisburg won all their matches and are qualified as group winners.

The best two second placed teams should be Breiðablik and Krka.

Btw. it disturbs me that Duisburg (well, the other teams too) actually have to pay to play that qualification tournament.
The UEFA gives some money to the host so that they pay the hotel etc. for the guest teams. But the guest teams have to pay for travel.

This may be a stupid question, but who else would pay for it?

The away team has always paid for their travel in the Womens' Cup and in the CL and it has been a problem for many team in the past and some could not afford the air fare for about 25 people.

So who's up for a trip to Åland? The fixtures for the "round of 32", drawn today.

    1. K. Sint-Truidense VV (BEL) – AC Sparta Praha (CZE)
    2. Legend Chernigov (UKR) – FC Rossiyanka (RUS)
    3. ŽFK Mašinac (SRB) – Arsenal LFC (ENG)
    4. CSHVSM (KAZ) – FCR 2001 Duisburg (GER)
    5. MTK Hungária FC (HUN) – Everton (ENG)
    6. Breidablik (ISL) – FCF Juvisy Essonne (FRA)
    7. PAOK FC (GRE) – SV Neulengbach (AUT)
    8. ŽNK Krka (SVN) – Linköpings FC (SWE)
    9. Rayo Vallecano de Madrid (ESP) – Valur Reykjavík (ISL)
    10. Åland United (FIN) – 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam (GER, Titelverteidiger)
    11. AZ Alkmaar (NED) – Olympique Lyonnais (FRA)
    12. Zorka-BDU (BLR) – Røa IL (NOR)
    13. Fortuna Hjørring (DEN) – CF Bardolino Verona (ITA)
    14. RTP Unia Racibórz (POL) – Brøndby IF (DEN)
    15. Apollon Limassol LFC (CYP) – Zvezda-2005 (RUS)
    16. FC Zürich Frauen (SUI) -ASD Torres Calcio (ITA)

    Also for the next round:

    CSHVS/Duisburg – Fortuna/Bardolino
    Rayo Vallecano/Valur – Mašinac/Arsenal
    Legend/Rossiyanka – Alkmaar/Lyon
    Racibórz/Brøndby – MTK/Everton
    Zürich/Torres – Breidablik/Juvisy
    Åland/Potsdam – PAOK/Neulengbach
    Krka/Linköping – Sint-Truidense/Sparta
    Zorka-BDU/Røa – Limassol/Zvezda

Potsdam with a great draw, it couldn't be any easier. Duisburg on the other side has to travel far away again and Fortuna/Bardolino isn't the easiest draw, but it could be much worse.
That Breidablik plays Juvisy again is great. :D

I have a trip to Serbia, not the best not the worse.
It could have been Belarus or Ukraine or Kazakhstan , a nightmare trip for supporters.

    I don't believe this.
Why can't Zurich play the away match first?
    And Potsdam the home match?
That way I could have seen both.
    Now I can't see either. :(

What is it this season that I manage to be in the wrong place at the right time for almost every match that I might normally have had a chance to catch?

The 3 countries where I feared to go. Fortunately, it's Holland first, but then (hopefully) Ukraine or more likely Russia.

We went to Nis last year. This year is probably a better time to go there, but I'd be interested in knowing your thoughts about the security in the stadium when you're back:D

I normally will sit if lucky in the VIP area :p as the lone away Champions League games supporter, the club is kind enough to provide me with a free ticket and VIP if possible, to thank me for my support.
