In years when they're AFC Youth Championships being played, the tournament is used as a preparatory championship, so only teams that have made AFC finals from the ASEAN region take part with invited guests, this time Korea Republic.

Thailand and Australia have both won the championship on two occasions each, followed by one victory for both Myanmar and Vietnam.

Thailand go into this years competition as title holders after winning the championship on penalties from Australia last year, again played in Vietnam.

HO CHI MINH CITY (23 July 2010) – The AFF Under-19 Championship this year is just a four-team meet but one thing for certain it will be more than just a preparatory tournament towards China.

Hosts Vietnam, Thailand, Australia and South Korea will battle it out at the Thong Nhat Stadium with an eye on the crown while the other firmly on the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Under-19 Championship in China in October.

Vietnam chief coach Trieu Quang Ha said that the tournament ’is very good against three strong opponents.’

“We will try our very best to do well in this tournament as part of our preparation for the meet in China.”

Taryn Rockall, the team manager for Australia, admitted as much.

“This tournament is a good stepping stone towards the meet in China where we can use it to better prepare our team,” said Rockall.

Added South Korea’s assistant coach Seo Hyo-won: “it is an honour to play against these good teams.

“We did not have a good period of time to prepare for this meet but with the players that we have, we hope that we can win the competition.”

Thailand ‘s chief coach Chalermvud Sangnapol in the meantime feels that it will be a lot harder for them to defend the title they won last year.

Thailand beat Australia in the final of the championship in 2009 to lift the crown.

“We have some problems getting the players that we want,” added Chalermvud.

“But the championship is good for the development of our team and this will allow us the chance to look at some of the other lads in preparation for China.”

The first game of the championship at the Thong Nhat Stadium tomorrow will see Australia taking on South Korea (1600hrs local time) with hosts Vietnam playing Thailand (1830hrs) in the second game of the day.

Technically this competition started in 1980 as an U-20 tournament. It was held in Malaysia which Malaysia and Thailand shared the title after a 1-1 draw in the final. I'm not quite sure who organized it but surely it would be the ASEAN.

Anyway... now that you've mentioned the fact about the tournament being a preparatory competition for the AFC Youth Championship, I didn't really notice that. I just thought that other nations didn't bother entering a team. So that actually sucks a bit. So if some of the lesser nations want to enter to give their youngsters some international competition, they can only do so every other year.

Yeah, what I think you are talking about is the Dunhill Cup?? I think it was a tournament organised way before the ASEAN Federation ever got up and going or at least were bothered to start a tournament.

Regarding your comment on that it 'sucks'. Yes you are right. I have thought the same. It does seem rather strange that they can't host a tournament for all teams in the region.

Last year without an AFC championship, all nations played. So why can't AFF do the same this year?

Ask anyone in the AFF and they will tell you they are commited to youth develop, but you only have to point out this tournament to show otherwise.

Now, just imagine if Vietnam or Thailand didn't make the AFC event. What happens then? No tournament, or a tournament with everyone?

The same goes for the U-16 event in September that features Indonesia, Vietnam, Timor-Leste and China.

Nope. I'm aware of the Dunhill Cup but there was an ASEAN U-20 competition in 1980, the first ever apparently. The five members of ASEAN were involved at that time and like I've said, the title was shared. The Dunhill Cup was an AFF competition held in the late 90's.

If it really is a "preparatory competition", there should be more teams involved to get them better "prepared". So ya, it's quite ridiculous. They shouldn't have to comprise the tournament for the sake of preparations for the continental tourney.

Also, one thing I just noticed. When this competition was still an U-20 tournament the oldest a player can be is 18 years. Take the 2007 edition for example as it was the last year as U-20. Players must be born on or after 1 Jan 1989. In 2008 when it became U-19, its the same, players must be born on or after 1 Jan 1989. So you can be 18 yrs. old max in an U-20 but you can be 19 yrs. old max in an U-19......

I don't understand the age rules, but i'm presuming they changed form U20 to U19 when the AFC also did the same thing just to fall in line. Not sure about the 1980 competition you mention - do you have anymore info?

    Matchday One Reports

HO CHI MINH CITY (24 July 2010) - The first match day of the AFF Under-19 Championship 2010 began in earnest as Australia edged out South Korea 1-0 as hosts Vietnam battled to a 1-1 draw against Thailand at the Thong Nhat Stadium.

Dimitrios Petratos was the toast for Australia with the only goal in the game 23rd minute as the Thais began their title defence by scoring first in the 49th minute through Natthawut Khamrin before Vietnam equalised off Nguyen Van Thanh in the 76th minute.

For Australia, it was a dream start following their win over the South Koreans although they should have dictated more control in the second half.

“We had a good first half where we scored the goal but I felt that we could have done better after the break to finish things off,” said Australian coach Johannes Versleijen after the match.

But it was the South Koreans who were the early aggressor with Kim Young Uk and Choi Sung Guen pulling the string from the midfield.

Their failure to convert a free kick on 15th minute when Oz keeper Mark Romano Birighitti parried it over gave Australia the chance to push forward.

In what was only their second attempt at goal following Matthew Leckie’s try just a minute earlier saw Petratos shooting in from an acute angle which beat South Korean custodian No Dong Geon before coming off the upright and into goal.

In the 29th minute of play, South Korea came closest to scoring in the first half but off a one-on-one situation, Lee Jong Ho shot into Birighitti instead.

The break did not produce much in terms of goals although the persistent drizzle made the ground more slippery as players from both sides struggle to stay on their feet.

As Australia seem to be content with the one-goal lead, it was South Korea who took much of the initiative but despite several close chances, Hyun Soo and co. just could not make any of them count.

In the meantime, with the rain continuing much into the second match of the day, the quality of football being played continued to get a battering.

And considering the importance of the game for both teams, it came as no surprise that a hatful of yellow cards were flashed by referee Midi Setiyano in the first half of the game alone.

Chances were far and in between as both teams struggled to get a footing at the centre of the park although Thailand eventually carved their first goal of the game just four minutes after the restart when Natthawut made good on a corner from Ponlachai Hongthong to flick the ball into the Vietnam net.

Vietnam stepped up their game soon afterwards and pressed the Thais hard but it was not until the 76th minute that the game finally brought cheer to the home team following the introduction of substitute Van Thanh.

Coming in place of the injured Nguyen Dinh Bao, the lanky Van Thanh nodded home the equaliser following a corner which was taken by Le Thai Quang.

“We deserve to get the draw. We played hard in the second half and in the last ten minutes we should have scored the second goal with the chances that we had,” said Vietnam coach Trieu Quang Ha.

Not expecting much from the Philippines as they only brought a young(average 17 y/o) inexperienced squad to this AFF U-19 championship.

    RESULTS and FIXTURES

    8 Sept: LAOS 3 INDONESIA 3 / BRUNEI DS 0 VIETNAM 7

    9 Sept: PHILIPPINES 1 SINGAPORE 1 / CAMBODIA 0 MALAYSIA 0

Except for Brunei, the smaller teams are doing pretty well so far, drawing the favourites in their respective matches. It looks like it is going to be a competitive tournament.
