I'm looking for a little advice on what would be the best way to get to Rio Tinto for the April 7th game against the Rapids. We will be skiing and staying either at Snowbird or Alta from the 5th to the 8th and I would love to check out the stadium. It doesn't look to far, but what are my options if I don't have a rental car?

Also any advice on places to ski/stay during that time would be most appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure there is a bus that runs from about 90000 south and 1300 East (ish) to and from the ski resorts. You could take that bus down and then another to the 94000 south trax station.

If you stay at the Hyatt just within walking distance of the RioT, they have a bus that runs people up to some of the ski resorts.

Call and talk to them more about how it works and the costs.

I would HIGHLY recommend that hotel, though, as it is damn nice and within spitting distance of the RioT.

Look at the map here: http://www.rideuta.com/uploads/saltlakesystemmap_dec2011_large.jpg

I think you could take the canyon bus down to the 9400 S 2000 E Park and Ride lot, and then take the F94 to the Historic Sandy 9000 S Trax Station, and walk from there, or take the Trax (light rail) to the 9400 S Trax Station.

Your problem will be getting back up the canyon after the game, since I'm assuming the ski bus won't be running that late.

My guess is that you'll have to have a car.

Look at the schedule on www.rideuta.com to be sure, though.

Well. No. The F94 doesn't run on weekends.

Sorry, but it looks like you're hosed.

Thanks for the advice. Probably will end up renting a car. Any advice on where to sit in the stadium and pre-game festivities?

There is not a bad seat in the house. The South end is where the rowdy supporters are. Carnival Real starts an hour before the game (I think) and is right out in the front of the stadium. :)

If you are staying at snowbird, the biggest problem would be the bus doesn't run UP the hill that late at night (neither resort has night skiing). Little Cottonwood CYN road will essentially turn in to 9400 S which will then turn into 9000 S. THe stadium is basically at 9200 S State str.

A game like colorado (perhaps our biggest rival) will definitely get people to the tailgate section (long, narrow parking strip just north of the stadium) AT LEAST 2 hrs before the game...

this reminds me of something: our supporters match with the cRapids last year went... well stupid. It was fun to play in, but only having a game at their place took away from the experience as they had a bagillion subs and such.

Anybody got good enough connections with RSL to try and convince them to let us use the practice pitch on 10000 south and state(ish) for the match? that way the cRapid supporters can get to it without too much bitching

This is in the works. As for bagillion subs, I'm sure the home team will always have way more than the visitors. The lame part is one team having 2-3 extra players on the pitch.:(

So we know where you're skiing (great choices, enjoy!) but, more importantly, where are you staying?

Hope you enjoy both while you're here!

My girlfriend and I are staying at Alta at the Gold Miner's Daughter. First time skiing in Utah and first time out West in quite a while. Poor girl, she even gets dragged to soccer games when we are on vacation.

Ended up renting a car. How long do you expect it would take to get from Alta to the stadium? Less then an hour?

yeah, and knowing how the soccer/weather gods like to show their appreciation for the RMC, you'll get snow or rain dumped on you while up there making it miserable.

Unfortunately, I can count the number of those days I've had this year on one hand... which, given the past few years, is a far cry from the norm.

My friend was in town the same weekend to mid week; fortuitous traveling i guess!

Well, you got to have some reason to hit the slopes when the snow turns to slush.
