25 minute of play Milan leading 1-0, Muntari heads a rebound that clearly goes several feet over the goal line. It was clearly visible live that it was a goal. The AR with a total miss.
The AR was about a yard away from the corner flag and would not have had a perfect view to let him know with 100% certaintly that the ball went in. Buffon did a great job selling the play, that he had made a save. There was a mob scene near the 4th official right after the play. Defininitely a goal and I agree that in live action it also was certain that it was a goal. Add this to the very long and growing list of reasons why instant replay is needed.
The still camera shot that we see looks to be at least a yard off the line as well, in the same direction as the AR (upfield). It's just from the opposite touch line. So either the "one yard away from the corner flag" is an inexcusable justification for the bad call or we can't even be certain, with that still, that the ball crossed. I choose the former.
Yup, that was the first thing that crossed my mind...the cameraman had the exact same view that the AR did...from opposite sides, of course.
If you can see "green" between the ball and the back of the post (as you can in this photo), then the ball is in the net no if's, ands or buts. So I would disagree with the statement that the AR's positioning makes this call difficult.....
Now Juve denied a perfectly good goal by an erroneous offside flag. Lots of talking points in this one.
You can also see on the non-goal call that 22 from Juventus raises his arm for offside. Using the old I was off the field of play ergo, there were not two defenders between Muntari and the goal. Idiot.
Actually, he was waiving to get the AR's attention so he didn't see the ball cross the goal line .... and it worked!
If you go solely by the photo above, it's easy to say it was an easy call for the AR. If you go by the video clip below, for those who didn't see the game, when you take into consideration the game speed and how quickly Buffon gets the ball out and sells the play, you can see it's not as easy as the photo makes it out to be: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSOoBWGt74k"]AC Milan 1-1 vs Juventus Sulley Muntari Goal 25/2/12 - YouTube[/ame]
I completely disagree. I was watching the game live on FSC HD this afternoon and immediately believed it was a goal. My suspicions were immediately confirmed on instant super slow motion replay. For me it was an obvious call. Even from the normal field view camera watching in real time.
Video makes it easier. You have every player in the box acting as if it was a goal. Time to take your cue.
I believed it was a goal too when watching it live. I'm just putting myself in the position of the AR because we have the advantage of watching on a HD TV in the comfort of our living room. I believe he was 90% sure too, but not 100% positive.
It is not as simple as that. On a throw-in, you're going by the body language of the players if you have no idea who the ball went off of since you have to point in one direction or the other. On a goal, either you saw the ball go in or you didn't.
Oh, I agree. Game speed is certainly an excuse... just saying that the 1 yard up the field shouldn't be. This, perhaps more than any goal, might help the push for technology. If ARs can't be relied on to always get it right when they are 1 yard away, then it really needs to be fixed. The England-Germany goal at the World Cup was one thing and there was a justifiable physics excuse for the missed call. This is different.
Hold on. Alberto, you are going on "suspicions." And Sport Billy is going on "taking your cue" from the players? On a goal/no-goal decision?!?! Got to say I disagree very, very, very strongly. Alberto, I agree with you that I thought it was a goal on first view. But I merely thought it. I wouldn't have been shocked to see a replay showing I was wrong. I think back to the Confed Cup goal/no-goal vs. Brazil. And the decision made by Sean Hurd at the WYC Final this past summer. Sometimes what we think gets immediately confirmed; sometimes it doesn't. Just because our thoughts are right this time, doesn't make it an easy decision. And Sport Billy, I just can't agree with your reasoning here. It opens up a huge can of worms. Plus, you've got to be focused on the line, not the other players. You can fault him for losing focus and missing the call, but I don't think watching the reaction of the players is a viable back-up plan.
But he was clearly not focused on the line. If he was, he easily sees this. I'm not saying not to do your job and just go by the players. But when all the players on a pitch react counter to your decision, your spidey senses should be going crazy.
Let me add, I objected to people chastising Atwell for following an AR and awarding a Phantom goal, this is equally as bad and not a single post has chastised the CR.
Hold on nothing. I went strictly by the evidence on the screen. It was clear to me it was a goal. Gigi Buffon's torso was well over the goal line and his arms were extended into the goal to parrying the ball out. That is what I saw and I swear to God that I would have been shocked if the whole of the ball in the subsequent replay would have never crossed fully over the line. That is how sure I was watching it real time.
This snapshot is a perfect example too of why keepers are not allowed to hang their towels on the side netting.
Mr. AR must get all the way to the end line on this for a straight on view, staying one yard off the line distorts his perception. I will also say that it appears that the referee actually signals for a goal or do my own eyes fool me?
You can't realistically fault the ars position. Just before this he was aligned with the keeper a couple of steps out. Keeper dove backwards at the shot. He still should have got this one right though
One yard away and he couldn't even make the call because you all claim he is out of position? You can easily make that call from one yard out. I saw the highlights well before coming on to here and it was a clear cut goal before they showed the slo mo replay. The AR was within position to make that call and he welched it.
