Re: Super crazy pro/rel idea If the valuation of the clubs keep going up, it's true that there will be a smaller pool of potential new owners. That's not a bad thing, in of itself, though. A lot of people are priced out of buying a Ferrari, too, but there's still a wait list to purchase one.
The latest club in England in jeopardy are Bradford. They say they need to raise £1 million to survive, with half of that needed in the next month. It would be easy to point to Bradford City's fee-spending days in the premier league, and their subsequent free-fall to the 4th tier, but this club is Bradford Bulls, the Rugby League club. Rugby League is of course a closed competition, with no pro/rel and with a salary cap and play-offs. The "glory-chasing" in this case would probably equate to reaching the play-offs, something they've failed to do for the last three years, after making them for the previous twelve seasons.
Well said. I just don't get why people think that the only way to have a season is to play a first past the post double round robin. There are so many options that are actually used by other leagues in the world and probably a few good options out there that aren't so well known. Most people don't know this, but at time Germany, Italy and Brazil all crowned their champions through playoffs with teams qualifying from regional groups.
Both Italy and Germany went to a national league without play-offs when they turned pro, so it's not a great example. It's not like they did it that way before because they thought regional leagues and play-offs would be more exciting.
The league is in great shape: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sport...rejects-move/2012/04/10/gIQArIgj7S_story.html
Yup. That league is a giant clusterf**k right now. It's a shame too, because they seemed to be making a turn in the right direction this season. It will be interesting to see how this Newcastle situation works out. Newcastle were one of the teams that took a major plunge in attendance two seasons ago and have really flourished under Tinkler's leadership.
None of this would happen if they had installed real pro/rel. Then interest would automatically explode and money would be coming in by the vessel loads and it would be the biggest greatest league in Australia replacing all others, forever and ever, Amen! [/sarcasm]
The irony is that if A-League does go down, that will be the argument. Perhaps not to the level of replacing all other leagues in Australia forever and ever, but the argument would be that if A-league did have pro/rel then Newcastle and Gold Coast would just be replaced by a lower division team. Nevermind that the lower division teams are in an even bigger crap hole than A-League is in, but oh well.
Remember, all countries are like England, where there are dozens upon dozens of viable football clubs ready and eager to move into any hole created by the failure of a club. Why, I bet there's at least 5 more teams in Newcastle ready to go, right? Right? ------RM
And, as if through the very act of closing it, another blogger has to bring it up and kick-start the whole thing again. new thread here: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1932977
