Re: A Blue "Don" - Donovan at Everton Yep, "A New Don" gets my vote too. You want to go with that, arkjayback?
Re: A Blue "Don" - Donovan at Everton It's a double pun. Landon's getting a new start in Everton and his new nickname is "The Don."
Re: A Blue "Don" - Donovan at Everton Ives recently reported that according to his sources there is no buy-out clause in LD's new contract. Do you hear that? It's the air going out of the transfer balloon. http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2010/02/your-january-questions-answered-part-2.html#more It's Galarcep v. Wahl. I know which pony I'd normally back, but given my cautious nature I'll assume the former is correct (despite being incorrect on multiple occasions in the past).
Re: A Blue "Don" - Donovan at Everton Not me, I'm going with Grant Wahl. He actually talks with Donovan, not just "unnamed sources."
LoL. Donovan strikes as the type of person who really would want the best of both worlds and is in the position with MLS to make it happen….so it doesnt make sense to me, but I guess you never know.
Re: A Blue "Don" - Donovan at Everton I thought of that, too. So I changed it from Blue to New. In order to arkjayback's wishes to be true. As for why I'm rhyming, I haven't a clue.
Re: A Blue "Don" - Donovan at Everton I saw that too. Ives probably has ZERO knowledge of Donovan's contract. It makes absolutely NO SENSE for a player who badly wants to get back to Europe, and KNOWs that he will head back to Europe to sign a multi year contract without ANY buyout clause? Or reasonable buyout price? Does LD strike you us such an IDIOT?
Re: A Blue "Don" - Donovan at Everton Not sure what you mean. But it is ironic that Ives has repeatedly said that The Wire is his favorite show.
Re: A Blue "Don" - Donovan at Everton As per Wahl or Ives, gotta go with Wahl on this one. Ives must have had some gaffes in the past that some won't forgive him for, because he does excellent work for US fans. But in this instance, I have no doubt that Wahl has direct contact with Donovan. And I trust Donovan over whatever source Ives has.
Re: A Blue "Don" - Donovan at Everton No....it's more like: Wahl = The Wire = the streets = in the trenches = dig deep for the info. Ives = American Idol = flash in the pan = plastic = on the surface info.
Re: A Blue "Don" - Donovan at Everton No, as I said in my somewhat tongue-in-cheek post, I'm a cautious person, so I'm letting myself down easy should Ives actually have hit the dartboard blindfolded.
Sometimes the unnamed sources are more reliable than a named source with an interest in the situation.
They can both be right or wrong at various times. There is no set rule that one is always right and one always wrong. Wahl's came courtesty of a tweet. Tweets have almost no standards for sources, and can later be researched further if they are wrong. In this case, Ives appears to have the better sources and is the more recent posting. Wahl's tweet was never backed up with more direct information. But, it will wait for a third posting from another blog source or a direct quote from the player or either club to confirm.
To be honest, I can't ever recall Ives breaking a YA story before - at least not one that was later confirmed to be true or backed up by another reliable source. The closest he came was announcing that the Donovan deal had been agreed to before the parties announced it themselves. But, at that point the story was already all over every news outlet, and it already seemed more likely than not that some sort of deal would happen. Moyes also later said that he didn't want to discuss Donovan's loan prematurely just in case the loan didn't happen or another club swooped in at the last minute, which suggested that the deal had not been agreed to yet. Not knocking the guy, but until I see something to suggest to me that his sources are legit, I'm going to trust the guy with access to Donovan himself.
