This was intended for RSLFM.com but was never published: The early days of Kreis' tenure as manager of RSL... Back when expressions like this were commonplace amongst the Squad. Smiles were hard to come by and I always ended up with depressing images like this one.
Does anyone have video footage of this goal? I used to have it on VHS but lost it. Can't find it anywhere on the web.
This is from a game I attended as the lone RSL fan at a June 2005 exhibition in Spokane against the defunct Shadow - attendance was close to 3,000. Our captain? Matt Behncke. As I walked in wearing my RSL shirt, Jamie Watson and Cameron Knowles clapped for me, which I thought was really cool. 2-0 on the night with a Behncke FK goal and a Selowane PK. PS I did not take the photo, the Spokesman Review did.
See it here (this is the 3 part video I made a couple years ago, the Dunseth diving header starts at 30 seconds): (and yes, getting highlights from the 2005-2007ish seasons was a bitch, online video quality back then was TERRIBLE) Or here is a 2005 RSL goals highlight video made by Scaryice I believe:
Nice. Love those rare exhibition games. Reminded me of the game RSL played against the University of Portland back in 2006 when I was a junior at the school. I can't find any photos or video of the match, just the match report and the BS thread we had here (and that I gave a very very inebriated first half report) http://www.portlandpilots.com/news/2006/3/25/10727.aspx?path=msoc https://www.bigsoccer.com/community/threads/rsl-vs-u-of-portland-pilots-3-25-06-r.330568/ I remember the match very well surprisingly, it was a very sloppy game and I remember Ballouchy impressing me quite a bit. Also that RSL had extreme difficulties finishing their chances, Watson being a total dick to the Portland Pilot players, Sequera being a big scary ************************, and the Pilots holding their own through the first half. It was rainy very hard and it was freezing cold, none of my friends wanted to stay so we left just before the second half started to go warm up and consume more booze (the latter assisting the former, of course). I'm pretty sure I took a couple pictures with my crappy cell phone camera, if I can find the phone I might be able to dig the pics off of it when I get home tonight. That would be an awesome trip down memory lane. At the very worst I know I have pics on that phone from the WCQ double header with the US/Costa Rica and RSL/FC Dallas games.
Was this at FX McRory's (or something like that) the night before the game? The team designated that bar as a gathering place for fans. I remember walking in and it was crazy. No seats in the main bar, lots of chants and singing, very cool atmosphere. We ended up eating in the restaurant in the back, but it was fun being around that many traveling fans. One of my favorite road trips thus far.
Same. I remember the street soccer some MLS marketing people set up outside Pike Place... The bar before the match... Winning... And the bar after the match.
Great night, took me most of the next day and a few beers to recover. Still love how little Salt Lake out supported and out played the Galaxy.
You would have done yourself a disservice and the rest of us a disservice in you hadn't posted the heck out of that cowbell picture.
