About the Lawrence vs. Hathaway thing: http://nymag.com/thecut/2013/02/why-do-women-hate-hathaway-but-love-lawrence.html I personally don't believe you can live under the spotlight for as long as Lawrence has and remain 100% genuine. I suspect all actors are "acting" their public persona to a certain degree. Perhaps Lawrence is just a better actress?
Weak. Sometimes the Onion crosses a line. They did with that one. It's not a matter of getting it. It's not a sophisticated joke. It's simply taking an extreme position that is against all others for comedic value. The problem is it wasn't funny largely because of the word that was used and the age of the actress made it even more inappropriate. I wouldn't use the "c word" for anyone.
Sometimes however, comedy is about pushing the limits of something, even if it't not sophisticated. Good comedy isn't always about what is immediately recognizable as a thought-out joke. Sometimes, a simple action has a lot of ideology behind it. I found it funny because it was in "bad" taste. Not offensive because it was The Onion.
You might be surprised at the number of people out there who didn't get it. And I agree that it was inappropriate for a variety of reasons, but especially since it was predictable that this would blow up and eventually get back to Ms. Wallis.
It was inappropriate because of her age. But of course that's also the only reason it was funny -- because it's so ridiculous and extreme. But just because it's funny, doesn't mean it should be said in public. It shouldn't have. But The Onion gets a pass from me and then some, even if they hadn't apologized. I'm glad they did, but they are true satirists and I would have been fine with their silence after the issue. Honestly, that enterprise should have been awarded a MacArthur grant years ago. They are not only consistently hilarious, they are frequently as insightful in their social criticism as The Daily Show or Colbert -- which is why many of their writers migrate to those shows. It was one tweet in very bad taste. Nothing to see here.
I don't follow The Onion on twitter. They're a satirical news source. I might expect something like this from a bad parody account, but not a satirical news outlet. I must stress that I don't follow @thetwitter though. Do they regularly use the "c" word? Agreed.
Bill Hicks proved a long time ago that you can joke about anything and everything as long as it is funny. The inappropriate nature of the Onion's tweet would not have been a problem had it actually been amusing.
Humor is the last bastion of free and ideology-exposition speech. It should NEVER be off limit and should be exposed to the public. of course I'm not talking about comedy that isn't constructive. The people behind the Onion have excellent quality filters.
Pointless, self-serving, in-no-way justifying offensive joke anecdote, that has an Oscar tie-in: I was once fortunate enough to be part of a project that involved Sister Helen Prejean, the woman whose work against the death penalty was the basis of Dead Man Walking, and who was portrayed by Susan Sarandon (for which she won an Oscar) -- despite looking instead like exactly how you would picture a 65+ year old nun devoted to fighting nearly-hopeless causes against insurmountable odds. So here's a woman whose moral standing was impeccable, who has personally sacrificed so much simply in the name of doing what's right, who has withstood constant abuse and harassment for the greater good, who has stood up to defend at times the worst of the worst because that is what needed to be done in the name of justice. After one event at which Sister Prejean spoke, I was having lunch with boss and my supervisee -- both women, both die-hard feminists and both deeply progressive. My boss was saying how great Sister Prejean's speech was, my associate was agreeing, and I said "..You know she made a pass at me, right?" Spit-takes all around. My associate had to clarify: Her: "Wha-a-a--a-t?" Me: "She totally grabbed my ass." More spit-takes. You see, IMHO, that was pretty funny, for somewhat similar reasons, i.e. completely ridiculous, profaning the pure, out of the realm of belief, etc. But I would never say that in public. Probably.
You're going to hell. But don't worry. There are probably some nuns there who'll think nothing of grabbing your ass.
thanks for proving my point. you're the kind of person that the internet was made for. a complete moral coward.
With pitchforks and pointers. When he started off with Prejean I thought we were going the disturbing Miss USA route.
See this is funny as hell. Completely unexpected and we are talking about adults. Kids are a completely different subject.
Come on!!!! Your judging him strictly on the content of his posts. Bet you were thinking his avatar, but that's just too easy. lol Slippery you're not a youth that I would have to retract or otherwise delete my post right?
Although one of my principals was named Sister Bernard Joseph and -- I swear to Big Chuey, this is 100% truth -- the other nuns routinely called her Sister BJ. In public. Out loud. Like, yelling down the halls. Obviously, as I am old and busted, this phrase did not exist -- but the situation called out for the response of "Seriously, you need to Google that."
