In April I posted a thread 7,114 for the collapse of the Revolution as a team that mattered in NE. It was a perfectly fine Saturday night weather wise, and only 7K were sold/distributed. Last night 21K showed up in a cool drizzle to support a terrible team with no "stars". What is wrong with that? Nothing, really. I will take 21K over 7K any day. The flip side? More reasoning for the Krafts to do nothing. Screw April and May. Wait for school to let out and/or fall kid soccer to start. Moms and Dads will bring their kids to the only pro game in town with no diea of the team record or who is on the field. Throw in a couple of exhibitions for crowds of 30-40K and life is good for team Kraft. Complaining about big and small crowds?! Guilty, but that isn't the message. It was just sort of depressing (weird I know) to see 21K show up for no reason what so ever. It's just enough to maintain the status quo rather than push Kraft for MLS 2.0 leadership. We could still be huge here.
I'm going to be delusional and say...20K didn't even know who the Revs coach is... But, they could find out very easily if they searched their "Smarty Phones"
Ha! If we gave out thousands of free tickets to a different constituency every game the way we did last night, I'm sure we could get 20K+ per game and be "huge". Kind of like a soup kitchen can be spun as a "popular restaurant." But no one's gonna come back and pay money for what they saw last night.
I very much doubt they "gave out" thousands of tickets last night. It's more likely they sold tickets a the discounted group rates to all the groups that showed up. Is it possible some people showed up to watch Diego (like in the old days when some people would show uP for Adu)?
I was there. A huge percentage of the crowd was kids in soccer uniforms (including the group I traveled with). It's tempting to say that having no relation between attendance and performance on the field (a la the Chicago Cubs) is a threat to the much needed blowing up of the organization. But let's face it... the 21,022 is the exception to the rule. If they were going to make excuses to not make any major changes, they were going to do so regardless of how many people to the last few meaningless games.
Same thing happened last year, remember? Last regular season home game, big group sales push, big crowd. They can do it once a year. The thing that counts is will any of them be coming back? I doubt many of them will. They've built a minor league baseball, single event, passive "fan base" and that is the root of the problem.
... and waged open warfare against that increasingly smaller population who truly cares about the club.
It was high school, college... Hell, throw in youth clubs as well "night," and that's the reason for the large crowd. The only time most of the cheered was when the camera put them on the Jumbotron. I'll say it again: the Krafts have not yet come to understand that there is a difference between being a soccer fan and a Revolution fan. I was more impressed by the Seattle supporters who made the trip or showed up.
Um me thinks you doth exaggerate.... It was pretty mild last night. I brought my jacket and didn't wear it, plus I had shorts on. Drizzle? Hardly. The sky wept a little bit, twice for about 2 minutes each time.
I did not make it to the game last night, I spent the better part of yesterday at Rentschler Field watching UConn play like crap. I did catch the game live on TV; it was bizarre to hear the crowd react to nothing going due to the game. When the camera would pan over to the corners on the far side (opposite of the benches) the kids near the corners would start waving and cheering. The Fort did sound great. The "you suck a..hole" chant was clearly audible, I thought that was being phased out?
I was there (first time in several years... since I live in NYS) and there was a constant din around the stadium but it seemed to have nothing to do with the action on the world. The fan cam was part of it.
I was in the Fort and did not hear YSA. Are you saying Seattle fans chanted YSA and they didn't even get kicked out?
Possibly, I can't look at the footage because MLS hasn't added any October games to their archive yet.
Regardless of who was at the game, the most frustrating thing with the attendance is every time we have a bigger than normal attendance the team looses. For once I would like to see the team win and have people leaving in a positive fashion.
Does the result on the field really matter if people don't care about the team? Maybe a win would make people happier, but that would be very momentary. I don't see people too upset after a loss as they leave the stadium. People just go, they get their 2 hours of entertainment, and the show is over.
I had to miss it as well, but they must have had the Fort miked because I was just about joining every chant. Background of the game. The announcers remarked on the crowd, but also the voice--could be part of the marketing which is fine.
This is where I am. I used to be furious leaving games. I walked out of this one like it didn't even matter. Great job Revs ... apathy is making it's way into your die-hards (oh who am I kidding, it's been making it's way). Right from the top down, the Revs FO doesn't seem to care, why should I?
I wanted a win, sure, but I was okay with the result if it does help to motivate the ownership to get the enema kit out.
Judging by the look of the fans as they exited the stadium on Saturday night the result probably didn't matter to the bulk of those in attendance either...
