Absolutely Balerion. I also feel like its different with goalkeepers- college may actually be their best option for consistent playing time. And I believe those affiliated with MLS teams can train with the MLS team in the summer. Would a guy like Jon Kempin for example, been better off going to college?
But lets calm down. Chances of Green and other euro hot shots getting released for qualifying is low.
If Green isn't with the first team by march of 2015, I wouldn't think it too outlandish. Of course, we've known all along that we have to qualify for these tournaments with mostly domestic players. Nothing new.
We have no clue where Green will be. Even if he doesn't get released for qualifying, I am excited for him to be in the program. We did have 4 Euros for 2013 qualifying. 7 for 2011 qualifying, and 3 for 2009. But yeah- I fully understand that it is and always will be a primarily domestic based squad.
We haven't locked him in, yet. His dad seems jazzed about the U.S., but when you're with Bayern there will be heavy pressure to go with Germany, esp if he continues to impress.
Agreed. I feel like because its Germany we're leaning more US. Imagine if the kid was English-American and playing for Man U. Or Spanish-American and playing for Real Madrid. Would we be as hopeful that he would play for us? I don't think so.
Well, I think a lot of the optimism is based on that he has a much deeper connection to the US than say Brooks or Chandler or Parker. Plus his Dad is openly lobbying for his son to play for the US. I guess we shall see how it plays out, but I'm sure he'll at least be at some camps. Potts was and he wasn't even eligible as it turned out.
If he was good enough to be considered for the Spanish or German senior team, I would not be hopeful at all. England on the other hand....
If Raheem Sterling for example had to choose btw USA and England rather than Jamaica and England you really think we'd have a shot?
That's not really what I was saying. I'm saying the England reject level is lower than Germany or Spain. A player not good enough for England is going to help us a lot less than a player not good enough for Germany or Spain. Would Fabian Johnson or Jermaine Jones be England players? Possibly.
Man, this would be interesting. My guess is that it would probably be a Shawn Parker-like situation where he takes the England thing as far as he can go and we'd have to hope he turns out good but not QUITE good enough for England, and of course makes this realization prior to being cap-tied. But considering the state of England's youth development, I'll be stunned if Sterling doesn't eventually turn out good enough for them.
It's interesting because its almost a mirror of the Julian Green situation. Small, black, pacy winger breaking through at big famous club has to choose between country of birth he left as small child or new country that's given him a shot at the top. Key differences that work in our favor IMO is that Julian doesn't have a child (Raheem has a baby), and his father is on Team USA's side(Raheem came to UK with his mother).
Has any player eligible for, and of legitimate interest to, a traditionally "better" soccer country ever chosen us over them?
Juan Agudelo had interest from Colombia's youth program. That's about all I got off the top of my head. Diego Fagundez might have been a candidate, but he's not a US citizen.
Another name for the U20 pool? http://owhentheyanks.com/2013/07/24/houston-dynamo-star-us-eligible-in-2014/ I haven't seen him play, but he's apparently a good student, so college might be in his plans. http://ussda.demosphere.com/teams/47158256/47187173-47158343/38899843.html
FYP. (Not that I disagree with it, or fault him for expressing his views, but if you follow Julian's dad on twitter you're gonna get a LOT of left-oriented political commentary.)
Haha, I intentionally avoid political stuff on Twitter, left or right. I trust you guys to fill me in whenever he says anything noteworthy.
You're telling me that complex political issues cannot be accurately summarized down to 140 characters?
Per YA thread there's a 95' defender on Toluca's youth team Marco Cesar Jaime. And another kid on Tigres probs more not sure why they haven't been in a u18 camp yet. As they've done a good job with kids in europe. Unless club doesnt release them for a meaningless ynt age group.
