Penn State ends spring season with Blue / White game against PSU soccer alums; the dog was on the white team.

Last Sunday Penn State played Navy in a game with lots of action that ended up 3-3. At this game vs. Navy, Penn State's new football coach James Franklin was in the stands for a good bit of the second half. As a Penn State soccer fan for over 35 years, that's the first time I've ever seen a PSU football coach at a PSU soccer game -- and a pre-season game at that. Cool that Coach Franklin came to the game. Franklin's got Penn Staters fired-up.

That's a move up for him and a good hire for PSU.

At UVa, he was the No. 2 assistant coach so he's moving up a notch and gets to stay at a major conference. PSU gets a guy who was part of a perennial power that recruited some of the best players in the country.

I like that they're playing so many in-state games. Good for rivalries that promote interest. I am assuming them not playing Pitt has to do with Pitt not wanting to play them and not because PSU is ducking them.

We usually play Akron. Which makes sense as they have been one of the stronger teams in the region. Wish I could get up for the WVa game so I could say hi to Mike Lapper.

For those of you who are former Penn State players, a reunion is scheduled for the Sept 5th game, Temple. At half, the 1954 National Champion team will be honored. Details at www.oldsoccerguys.com.

Penn State soccer putting up some new stadium branding today ... good timing as the USA started their World Cup play with the big win today, and Bill Jeffrey, later Penn State head coach, was the Team USA head coach when they upset England in the 1930 World Cup 1-0; the assist on that goal came from Walter Bahr, who was later Penn State's head coach also.

1950 was when the US and Bahr beat England, not 1930.

And Jeffrey would have announced his recruits!

My bad on getting the year wrong. Glad you guys are here to set me -- and Penn State too -- straight. :) Bahr and Jeffrey are next to each other in the photo below; top row at the far right. And speaking of it not being 1950 anymore, hopefully better things will continue to happen in Happy Valley. For as the PSU alma mammy puts it, "for the glory of old State ... for the future that we wait ..." [IMG]
