The Yankees officially begin Spring Training action today, playing the first of two with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ivan Nova is scheduled to start against Francisco Liriano. Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran will all appear. Derek Jeter is expected to go in tomorrow's game.

Yesterday, the Yankees warmed up by taking out the Florida State Seminoles, 8-3. Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston grounded out and struck out in two at-bats, entering the game in the 5th inning as a left fielder for Florida State. Vidal Nuno started for the Yanks

Masahiro Tanaka will make his debut on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies. CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda will also pitch in that game.

    From the Associated Press...

Tanaka Goes 2 Shutout Innings in 1st Yankees Game
TAMPA, Fla. — Masahiro Tanaka allowed two hits and struck out three over two scoreless innings in his first spring training game for the New York Yankees. The Japanese star entered in the 5th inning of Saturday's game against Philadelphia. Some fans stood when Tanaka walked to the mound to a loud ovation.

Darin Ruf, the first batter Tanaka faced, swung and missed the right-hander's first two pitches before lining a single. After getting a pair of flyballs, Tanaka struck out a swinging Cesar Hernandez. In the 6th, Tanaka fanned a swinging Ben Revere before Ronny Cedeno blooped a single. All-Star Domonic Brown went down swinging and pinch-hitter Kelly Dugan flied out. Tanaka's 31 pitches were four less than the Yankees had allotted for him.

The Yankees said the game was carried by three TV networks in Japan.

Weird weekend series took place in Panama. The Yankees traveled there to honor Mariano Rivera in his home country -- will the dieafication ever end? -- and play a couple of games against the Florida Marlins.

So the Yanks get no-hit(!) in Saturday's 5-0 loss with hot shots like Jeter, Beltran, Soriano and Gardner in the lineup. On Sunday, they returned the favor. The Marlins were 1-hit in a 7-0, 15-hit Yankee attack at Rod Carew Stadium. CC Sabathia went 5 perfect innings in the start.

In additional news, Masahiro Tanaka, who didn't go to Panama, made his 3rd start in a split-squad game and continues looking terrific. He threw 4 1/3 innings, striking out 6, giving up 1 run and 3 hits against the Atlanta Braves in Tampa...

That was close: when I was a kid, there were two back to back "return the favor" no hitters, two of which I listened to on the radio because I was home from school sick in September of 1968: The Giants no hit the Cardinals one day (which pissed me off no end, even more so when my Mom said, "but maybe the Cardinals will no hit the Giants tomorrow." And they ********ing did). I think one of those games was a night game on the west coast, so I got to stay up late listening on KMOX.

I think that happened only one other time, when the Astros and Reds returned the favor on each other in...

Ah screw it: Wiki says 1969... I remembered it a year or two later when I was playing little league. But it was a 2 game series at Crosley Field, April 30th and May 1st for that one.

I also recall the 1968 no-hitters and never forgot the pitchers involved: Gaylord Perry and Ray Washburn. I had to look up the other one you mentioned from 1969: Jim Maloney and Don Wilson -- and it was the 2nd time for both those guys in the no-hit department! Some damn good pitching names from the past.

Joe Girardi has announced his starters for the first 4 games of the season. CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda and Ivan Nova will go in the first 3 games of the season in Houston against the Astros. Masahiro Tanaka will then pitch in Toronto versus the Blue Jays.

It looks pretty certain that Michael Pineda will be named the 5th starter in the rotation.

Michael Pinada gets the #5 slot in the rotation. He'll make his Yankee debut -- two years after the trade that brought him here -- on Satuday, April 5, in Toronto against the Blue Jays. It's about time!

Francisco Cervelli has been named the backup catcher for Brian McCann. Austin Romine optioned to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. According to reports, the Texas Rangers called the Yankees about Cevelli after Geovany Soto went down with a knee injury but the Yanks told them they weren't interested in a deal.

Dellin Betances and Vidal Nuno got the last two slots in the bullpen. Betances, one of the former Killer B's down in the minors for the Yankees, was moved to the bullpen and had a great spring -- 12 1/3 innings, 5 hits, 11 strikeouts, 4 walks, 0.73 ERA. I would prefer Nuno as a starter and thought he was going to be sent to Scranton so he could get regular turns in a rotation. He pitched in 4 games (2 starts) this spring, with a 3.38 ERA and 8 strikeouts in 8 innings.

Dean Anna and Yangervis Solarte will be the backup infielders, their first time on a big league roster. Anna will be behind Jeter at short. Solarte hit .429 (18-for-42) during spring training, beating out Eduardo Nunez (.286, 13-for-49) for the 2nd base/3rd base spot. One of these guys will be getting bounced when Brandon Ryan returns from a neck injury.

Masahiro Tanaka ended spring training 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA. He made 5 appearances (3 starts), gave up 5 runs over 21 innings, allowing 15 hits, with 26 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Lousy opener. CC threw the Yanks under the bus right from the beginning. He gave up 6 runs over the first 2 innings, including home run blasts by fearsome batters like Jesus Guzman and L.J. Hoes. And what's with CC and opening days anyway? -- he's made 11 starts lifetime and gone 1-3 with a 6.12 ERA in them. Scott Feldman pitched like an All-Star for Houston and kept the lineup in check. The team woke up a bit after he was removed, scoring 2 in the 8th (RBIs thanks to singles from McCann and Teixeira).

The Yankees seem to think they have to keep talking CC up as the "ace" of the staff or he'll get bummed out. Too bad. CC ended spring training with 16 scoreless innings. So now it's April and a different story? Sorry CC, but Hiroki Kuroda moved into ace status for the Yankees last season and remains there until pushed out. Deal with it.

On the bright side, Dellin Betances pitched the 7th and struck out 2, while Vidal Nuno came in for the 8th and struck out the side. Nice work.

In other news, somebody needed to get removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Yangervis Solarte -- and it was Eduardo Nunez! Apparently, the Yanks have given up on him. Between his poor fielding (mainly throwing errors) and the frequent petty injuries he was always getting, the Yankees decided to designate him for assignment. I'm disturbed to see him go. If Solarte is really ready for the big leagues, fine. But the jury will remain out with me until I see more.

As a final insult, Solarte was even given Nunez's old number 26! And Dean Anna was awarded a new number, 45.

Lineup changes by Girardi work and the Yanks avoid an embarrassing Astros sweep. Yangervis Solarte gets his first big league start and goes 3-for-3 (all singles) with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. Ichiro had 2 hits (single, double) and scored twice. Ivan Nova got himself into trouble -- 6 hits, 5 walks, 2 hit batsmen -- but threw 4 double play balls to save his skin. The bullpen (Warren, Kelley, Robertson) nailed all 11 batters they faced.

Tanaka tonight! Start time in Toronto pushed back by a half-hour.

I almost fainted when Masahiro Tanaka gave up that homer to Melky Cabrera last night. The first batter! But all's well that end's well. Tanaka settled down and pitched a nice game -- 7 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), 0 walks and 8 strikeouts. Another 2 shutout innings from the pen. Ellsbury went 3-for 4 (2 doubles, 2 steals), Solarte 2-for-5 (2 doubles, 3 RBIs), Ichiro 3-for-5.

Bad news is that Mark Teixeira suffered a right hamstring strain and has been placed on the 15-day DL. Austin Romine called up -- so the Yankees now have three catchers! I guess Kelly Johnson will be doing heavy duty at first.

    Michael Pineda's first start:

    "
    • Shoulder surgery is always worrisome for pitchers, which is why so much was made ofMichael Pineda's velocity during spring training. Pineda did not pitch in a park equipped with the PITCHf/x tracking system, so there were no official readings on his velocity. There seemed to be reports that his fastball was better than last season, but not all the way back. That didn't seem to be the case Saturday, as Pineda consistently hit 95 mph on the stadium gun. Back in Pineda's breakout season, he was hitting 95.40 mph with his fastball in March. That number jumped to 96.67 mph in April. Considering those factors, Pineda's velocity technically was down, but the fact that he is still able to throw 95 mph consistently after shoulder surgery is impressive. Based on both his velocity, and his results, his arrow is definitely trending up after one start this season." -Chris Cwik/CBSSports.com

    95 MPH, great control, 6'7" 260 lbs. , 25 y.o......uh...Mercy!

CC was fine today before falling apart in the 6th. Ex-Yank Melky Cabrera whacked his 3rd home run in the series. Yankee bullpen (Warren, Kelley, Robertson) slammed the door shut on Toronto for the final 3 innings. Kelly Johnson, playing first for the injured Teixeira, had a 2-run double. Brett Gardner smacked a 2-run homer. With 2 singles, Derek Jeter (3,320) moved past Paul Molitor (3,319) into 8th place on the all-time MLB hit list. He has 99 to go to catch Carl Yastrzemski (3,419) for 7th place.

David Robertson goes on the 15-day DL with a left groin strain. Lefty Cesar Cabral called up from Scranton. Shawn Kelley expected to be doing the closing duties for the next two weeks.

Eduardo Nunez traded to the Minnesota Twins for left-handed reliever Miguel Sulbaran. He's 20 years old and has never pitched above Single-A. In 55 career minor league games with the Dodgers and Twins organizations, he is 21-10 with a 3.15 ERA.

Ivan Nova and Vidal Nuno were both clobbered yesterday, giving up 7 runs each! Francisco Cervelli started at first base, which he has never played professionally. Yangervis Solarte had 2 more doubles, for a total of 6 so far. Shawn Kelley, the new closer until Robertson gets back, melts down in the 9th for the loss. Masahiro Tanaka has now pitched 14 innings, striking out 18 while giving up only 1 walk. He's allowed 2 home runs and has a 3.21 ERA. Speaking of homers, Beltran got his first last night and Kelly Johnson had his second. In the 9 games the Yankees have played, they have a grand total of 5 home runs -- Bronx Bombers indeed!

Righty Shane Greene called up for an extra arm in the bullpen. Austin Romine sent down.

3 out of 4 from Boston. Beautiful! Carlos Beltran knocked out his 3rd homer and was sent to play first base for the first time in his career when Cervelli collapsed trying to beat out a throw for a single. Derek Jeter missed his second game in a row with a tight right quad. Unfortunately, the injuries keep piling up:

-Mark Teixeira (strained calf): Back on April 20.
-David Robertson (groin strain): Back on April 22.
    -Yangervis Solarte (groin): Day-to-day.
    -Derek Jeter (strained quad): Day-to-day.
-Brian Roberts (lower back): Re-evaluated over the next few days.
-Francisco Cervelli (hamstring): To be placed on 15-day DL.
-Brendan Ryan (lower back): Out until early May.

After playing 13 straight days since Opening Day, the Yankees finally get an off day. Expect Austin Romine to be called back before tomorrow's game for backup catching duties.

A lot of talk before the season about unloading Ichiro because there's no place for him to play. Well, thanks to the inevitable injuries, he's managed to get the time and has gone 8-for-19 (.421). It's called "depth," something the Yanks have lacked in recent years.
