If the first half tonight is any indication of how we'll play in these things this summer .... I'll buy the authentic and replica in both ss and ls for myself, my wife, and both my sons.
If the first half today was an indication of how we'll play in the second half, I'd have drank fewer beers tonight.
In the FIFA world cup game the shorts are blue..I prefer it to the red shorts. Still not planning on buying either jersey..centennial will suffice..might look into getting an older jersey too
As much as anything else, I dislike that Nike and the USSF decided to ditch the home uniform of white shirts, navy pants and white socks that we were wearing fairly consistently in 1998, 2002 & 2006 and the away uniform of navy shirts, white pants and navy socks. In 2010 and again this year, we've gone with an all white home uniform and an all color away uniform. It would have been a nice classic look to simply stay with a home white-blue-white kit and an away blue-white-blue kit. I suppose that upsets me more than the switch from navy to a pale shade of royal blue and going to an away red kit.
I'm more broad in my disappointment: It disappoints me that no one at USSF has tried to establish a definite brand for the USMNT. Remember that really awesome jersey everyone loved that was fresh and stylish and historic and couldn't be confused with any other nation...4 years ago? What happened?
It really seems to me that this "rebrand" of the USA away uniform is all about trying to capitalize on the Superhero/Captain America craze. Nike must think that most U.S. soccer fans are either middle school students or comic book geeks. Nike tried this approach years ago when it chose the names and designed the uniforms for the first year of MLS. We all saw how that turned out. Thankfully Kevin Payne refused to call D.C. United the "Washington Spies" as Nike suggested & demanded a traditional look for United's first uniforms. That's the only explanation that makes any sense to me.
This is how you do an American sport Captain America jersey: Dave Zabriskie when he was American national time-trial champion. As a comic book geek he asked for a Captain America national champion jersey.
I had never heard that before. For those that don't know, Nike also tried to make the Chicago expansion team the Chicago Rhythm, but Peter Wilt refused.
Nike wanted the "New England Nitro" with a green/orange color scheme. Bob Kraft's first act as owner was also his best: saying "Aww hell nos"
…and that's why MLS didn't fail, they didn't listen to every jackass with an 90's "Xtreme!!!!!!!!!" sport idea, and over time filtered out the more egregious over time.
So, back to MLS 2014 uniforms. The Rapids vs. Whitecaps game this weekend made me wonder about something. Vancouver, who has the white jersey's as their primary, must have decided to where their secondary dark blue jersey's for this game for whatever reason, therefore the Rapids wore their primary Burgundy/White/Burgundy look. I have heard about the Ref's especially liking contrasting socks so it is easier to make calls, so you would think they would have asked the Rapids to wear white socks to contrast with the Vancouver Navy socks. But do the Rapids even have white socks? I'm guessing not, or at least not ones that are Rapids branded because KSE probably doesn't want to spend any more than it has to spend. Can some white socks really be that expensive? To me this is just another example of how KSE treats the Rapids like a red headed step-child, and I think MLS when they going through the Rapids, or any other teams uniform approval process, should have said "Hey get another set of white socks from Adidas for your primary kit, because we want contrast when you play dark blue teams."
Have they worn their primary at home this year? I was wondering about that while watching highlights of this game- don't think I've seen the Whitecaps in white at home this year.
