As we hear there has been some feedback of surprise within the footy industry that 1860 of all got Juuja.

But Funkel and Hinterberger were the first to show interest back in October. Then they watched him playing Holland. This and that Funkel wanted Osako "by all available means" gave 1860 a headstart.

That seems to be the case, which is pretty important since you need the manager's full support to secure playing time as a lone striker.

Another report from bundesliga.com. The German page reads a bit differently than the english page. Same report in Japanese.

Says Osako, "The second Bundesliga is insanely strong and 1860 is a traditional club that is known even in Japan. I want to help the club achieve their objective [of promotion] with good performances and with goals. This is the best way to position myself for the national team [this summer]. "

1860 is known in Japan? Maybe known to a few Buli otakus.

Also funny that he kinda believes in promotion.

I think there are quite a few Buli otakus in Japan - even before the Japanese invasion. But yeah not that famous. ;) And it's important to stay positive - realistically he needs to get to a 1st division sometime in the near future, for the sake of his career.

If Juuja gets to Buli together with 1860 I guess that will be a huge boost not only for all those 1860 otakus(@Blue-San) in Japan. Im also surprised that 1860 is obviously known in Cali.

Haha actually there are relatively few users from Japan in the Japan forum. The average person in Japan knows about as much English as Osako. ;)
TBH all I knew about 1860 before this whole saga was that Bobby Wood plays there, and that it's very old. I did spend an academic term eating Döner and watching soccer in Berlin during college, so I may not be representative of the average American...

I hope losing the ball to Schwabl is a bit due to the jetlag. ;)

Seems Osako will not be wearing #18. DFL rules do not allow for a player to give up a number to another player once the season starts even if that player has never played. Neumeyer had #18 and gave it up for Osako. He has not played a game this season. Heck, I don't think he's even been on the roster for a game. However, DFL rules say the switch cannot happen, so Osako will have to select another number for this year. The numbers 8 and 13 have been mentioned.

Maybe he can just go out there wearing Neumeyer's jersey and catch the opposition off guard. Hopefully no one notices.;)

Based on the players on the roster at the moment, here is my ideal starting lineup going into the second half of the season:

    ------------------Osako--------------------
    -----------------Mike Ott-----------------
    Adlung - Stark - Stahl - Stoppelkamp
    Hertner - Bülow - Vallori - Wojtkowiak
    --------------------Kiraly

So how does it work - can you re-register the same shirt number to another player in midseason, but only if you deregister (release) its previous owner?

He's got a nice leather jacket. I almost bought a similar one a few days ago. It was really nice but I changed my mind in the last moment because 1) it was too expensive and 2) I don't really need a coat. The temptation was great though.

Im not quite sure. But I saw this happening a few times. From what I know it all depends on the official player register at DFL. You have to wear the number with that you are registered there. That's why he could not wear the 18 cause Neumayer is already registered there with it. But if Friend leaves it is free and they register him with 9. But I think during summer break you can change numbers all you like but only once a year.

Correct. Once registered for the season it stays with the player UNLESS the player is no longer with the team. Numbers are for the season and cover cup and league play. Test matches are not covered but friendlies are (the latter being seen as more official than test matches, and is why you can have guest players come in wearing registered numbers). Come summer you can get a new number and register for the next season. Summer play you can wear any number you like as it is essentially unregistered play until late July (or two weeks prior to the season start, whichever comes first).

Well Funkel would likely play this in a 4-1-4-1:

    ------------------Osako (Lauth)----------
    Adlung - Stark - Stahl - Stoppelkamp
    -----------------Bülow---------------------
    Wojtkowiak - Schindler - Vallori - Volz
    -----------------Kiraly---------------------

But I could see him doing this too in a 4-4-2 diamond:

    ---------Osako --------- Lauth-----------
    -----------------Stark----------------------
    Adlung -------------------- Stoppelkamp
    -----------------Stahl----------------------
    Wojtkowiak - Bülow - Vallori - Volz
    -----------------Kiraly---------------------

Funkel is usually like many German coaches; they are very conservative and do not simply throw players new to German football on to the pitch to see what happens. I suspect that Funkel will stick with his 4-1-4-1 with Lauth starting but bringing Osako in around the 50th. I could also see him having Lauth play this...but just a big further up in an AM-type role.

    ------------------Osako (Lauth)----------
    Adlung - Stark - Lauth - Stoppelkamp
    -----------------Stahl---------------------
    Wojtkowiak - Buelow - Vallori - Volz
    -----------------Kiraly---------------------
